I wish that the spidertron has a logistic auto request built in it.

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 08:36 PM PDT

As Spidertrons are able to have personal roboports and build entities from its trunk, it becomes tiring to replace the items manually. I think that the spidertron should have automatic logistic requests so that they'll be automatically resupplied every time they come back.

Alternatively, allow inserters to put entities into spidertrons. As of now, it doesn't work.

This is why I should read tutorials and watch videos before playing games.

    Clean your pc/laptop regularly!

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 10:16 PM PDT

I know what you're thinking: isn't that something you should do on a regular basis anyway?

Well i've seen posts on forums where people complained that their cpu overheated. Mine did too when i played factorio full screen. Got to 100 celcius degree easily.

It made me give up the game.

Then i realised there's something called dust, so i opened the back of the laptop, took out the cpu fan and lo and behold- the heat sink / exhaust was crammed with dust. After cleaning and assembling it back together the problem seems to be solved. Highest temperature was 77 degrees celcius.

So, if your machine starts to sound like a 747 taking off, check the cpu temp (core temp) and check if there's dust.

    Help :(

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 07:30 AM PDT

I have played for at least 100 hours and every time I get to the late game I have one issue that bottlenecks me like crazy; Iron and Copper plate production. I feel like having so much time I should have gotten around this ages ago, but alas. Even with 4 belts full on my bus I always have a shortage of one or the other. Are there any quick fixes or tips that I'm completely missing? Any help is much, much appreceatied

I was always running out of space for waiting areas for trains at mining outposts when the patches were close to each other so I came up with this whacky design that can hold 6 trains.

Idea: Animate Spidertron doing the crab rave

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 10:42 PM PDT

If someone doesn't know the crab rave: https://youtu.be/cE0wfjsybIQ

I think it would be immensely popular if someone spends the time to animate Spidertron dancing the crab rave, maybe with some real-life pollution videos in the background or something.

I don't have any knowledge in animation and not enough interest to spend the time, just wanna give away the idea if someone wants a new project.

Someone did a 3D print. This might help creating the 3D model to animate. https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/ip3a54/spidertron_spidertron_does_whatever_a_spidertron/

Compressed blue belt end game smelting attempt

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 01:07 AM PDT

One of the most intriguing aspects of the game is designing efficient building layouts, so I thought I'd gain some experience with this aspect of the game by trying my hand at an end game smelting setup.

Here's the result: https://imgur.com/a/0yNmgKG. The left side shows a single setup, and the right shows how it could be tiled both horizontally and vertically.

On the negative side, not as many beacons can be reused when tiling it, so for 6 horizontal tiles it will end up using 103 beacons, instead of closer to 80 for more optimal designs. The other negative is that it uses a variety of components outside of just belt/underground belt/fast inserters such as substations, filter inserters, and stack inserters.

The only positive aspect of the design I can really see is if the shape fits better into a particular area, more so for smaller setups where the beacon difference compared to optimal is less.

While I don't really expect anyone to really use this, the blueprint is at https://pastebin.com/SRE0svXw.

    Some background on the design:

Using the calculator at http://kirkmcdonald.github.io/calc.html, I determined that an average of 14.4 speed beacons per smelter is just the right amount to support 14 smelters with productivity modules, so I decide to try to use this for the concept. One thing that surprised me is that even though this design averages 14.57 speed beacons per smelter, it didn't initially produce a perfectly compressed blue belt. Even though the last smelter on each lane would eventually store up 100 plates, based on the gap pattern on the belt a fast inserter wasn't always able to fill in all the gaps due to swing time. I tested with two fast inserters, a fast/stack inserter, and then found that only two stack inserters per last smelter worked to not leave any gaps in the output belt consistently.

This was my 4th attempt, and it is quite a bit more compact than the previous 3. On the 3rd attempt, I experimented with the idea of splitting the input into the inside lane on multiple single belts and then putting the output back onto them.

In the end the design is reasonably compact and I'm pleased enough with it. It's a little embarrassing, but I probably spent 10 hours between all the various iterations of the design. I can see why the common design for smelting is to have long rows of beacons now, which is better for reuse when tiling.

I look forward to continuing to experiment and improve my factory design skills :)

    I lost my game

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 05:21 AM PDT

So yesterday something bad happened to my computer and only thing I could do was basically reinstall the os keeping some personal files. I knew there was a chance I'd lose my game but I hoped not. After reinstalling factorio, I load it and find that my very first game is there, one that I ended up cheating and experimenting with, but my first proper game that I'd put real time into, launched my first rocket and had started making a new base that was a bit more structured than the original spaghetti isnt there. I'm really sad, I feel like I've lost all my momentum. I've tried starting a new game but just lose all inspiration really quickly. So learn from my mistakes yall, make sure your games is secure

    This Game has a DEMO!

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 10:38 AM PDT

So I stumbled upon this game on youtube about 2 weeks ago. I have played things like Banished and Rimworld in the past and love them. When I play games like Ark, Minecraft, or 7 Days to Die I find myself spending more time with graph paper plotting out my "ultimate" base than actually doing "what you are supposed to."

I decided to check this out on Steam... Initial thought... Crap... $30 seems like a bit much for that.

I noticed their was a demo button right below the wishlist button. After clicking add to my wishlist, I decided to check out the demo...

I am now on night 5 of the demo. I decided to not follow the demo instructions and just build... I am having a blast. I found a youtuber Katherine of Sky that makes absolute gorgeous layouts. I have tried to replicate... but my poor demo map is just too small to do any of that justice. My son (he is 21) has mocked and ridiculed me (jokingly of course) about not playing the game "right." "Dad, just finish the demo... Do what the tips tell you to." Bah to that I say... If I never research Walls I can cheese it and build until I use up all the resources on the map.

I restarted the demo last night and just ran to the 3 biter bases. I killed them right at the start so that I can build in piece...

To sum up... I used all my "allowance" for now... but that $30 does not seem so bad now... Just biding my time...
