[2k spm base] The base is finished and I am released from the bondage.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 03:16 AM PST

What a ride. 500 hours over 18 months it took to complete this monstrosity. Many, many more if you count the hours spent in Excel and on the toilet running calculations and planning. Twice I got burned out and had to take a 6+ month break (and finish Rimworld "real quick"), but it is now finally done.

So after rolling my first turd spaghetti base over the finish line, I figured I am now ready to tackle the mega scale. The idea for this base was to build a large rectangular contour with just about everything besides science moved to a specialized factory alongside it and crank out 1k spm in the middle. But it turns out, after moving all production off site, the bus left for 1k spm is puny, a dozen belts. And with everyone posting their 1k spm bases at the time, I did what any Factorian would - just double it.

With everything twice the planned size, I was blindsided just how big the circuit and steel factories became. And obviously if something is big in Factorio, you try to squeeze it in a tiny space. So I figured I would cram the whole factory inside the contour. It started looking more and more like a circuit board, so I just went with it. Not a terribly efficient solution, I must say, but when has that ever stopped anyone. Even with eliminating huge traffic creators like ores and green circuits, the contour can juuust about contain the traffic needed for 2k spm after adding a bunch of jangly bypasses.

    So there we have it

The smelters I built to fuel 24 blue belts of green circuits, UPS can't handle the belts anymore.

How many resources do you need to launch a rocket?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2020 01:53 PM PST

I just calculated this to answer a comment, but I think it can also be a post. Let's suppose you want to build a rocket, but you also want to be as cheap as possible. To get to the rocket you will need to go through the research tree. You will need the following science flasks:

Research Time Red Green Blue Yellow Purple Total time(s)
    Automation 10 10 100
    Logistics 15 20 300
    Logistic science pack 5 75 375
    Steel processing 5 50 250
    Electronics 15 30 450
    Logistics 2 30 200 200 6000

    Concrete 30 250 250 7500
    Oil processing 30 100 100 3000
    Plastics 30 200 200 6000
    Sulfur processing 30 150 150 4500

    Low density structure 45 300 300 300 13500
    Speed module 2 30 75 75 75 2250
    Productivity module 2 30 75 75 75 2250
    Lubricant 30 50 50 50 1500
    Production science pack 30 100 100 100 3000
    Rocket fuel 45 300 300 300 13500
    Speed module 3 60 300 300 300 300 18000
    Electric engine 30 50 50 50 1500
    Productivity module 3 60 300 300 300 300 18000
    Robotics 30 75 75 75 2250
    Utility science pack 30 100 100 100 3000
    Rocket control unit 45 300 300 300 300 13500
    Rocket silo 60 1000 1000 1000 1000 1000 60000
    Total 5750 5565 3650 1600 1300 222575

For the materials, you will need at least 1 furnace, 1 assembling-machine-2 (for the electric motors, concrete, advanced circuits and rocket fuel) , a lab (to research) and the rocket silo (to launch the rocket) . For electricity you need at least an offshore pump, a boiler, a steam engine and two small electric poles1. For oil processing you will need at least a refinery, a chemical plant and a single tube2 that you can use as storage for fluids. And finally you also need the materials to build 100 rocket parts

    That amounts to:

    Materials Amount
    Iron 274 842.833
    Copper 238 073
    Stone 19 696.667
    Coal 25 691.667
    Wood 1
    Oil 677 735.043
    Water 907 957.265

Additionally to this you would also need enough fuel to power your factory. How much fuel? These are the items that require electricity to produce:

Item Count Factory Total power (MJ)
    rocket-part 100 rocket-silo 85.5
    stone-brick 5843.333 stone-furnace 841.5
    steel-plate 23672 stone-furnace 17044.0
    iron-plate 274742.833 stone-furnace 39563.1
    copper-plate 238072.5 stone-furnace 34282.5
    battery 866.667 chemical-plant 728.1
    lubricant 9500 chemical-plant 199.6
    sulfuric-acid 27666.667 chemical-plant 116.5
    sulfur 4591.667 chemical-plant 482.4
    plastic-bar 51383.333 chemical-plant 5395.6
    concrete 1000 assembling-machine-2 200.2
    electric-engine-unit 633.333 assembling-machine-2 1266.7
    processing-unit 2066.667 assembling-machine-2 4133.6
    rocket-fuel 1000 assembling-machine-2 6000.1
    Oil Processing oil-refinery 14238.0
    Oil Cracking chemical-plant 10296.0
    Extracting oil pumpjack 6099.63
    Total 140972.9

Which is equivalent4 to the following fuels:

    Fuel Quantity
    Wood 70486.5
    Coal 35243.2

And how much time would you spend doing everything5?

Activity Time (minutes) Time (hours) Time (days)
    Assembling by hand6 10046.85 167.45 7.0
    Assembling in the assembler 1717.30 28.62 1.2
    Mining7 18610.30 310.17 12.9
    Melting in the furnace 33974.6 566.24 23.6
    Doing science 3709.58 61.83 2.6
    Building rocket 5.70 0.10 >0.01
Processing in the chemical plant 1366.2 22.77 0.9
    Processing in the refinery 564.8 9.41 0.4
    Extracting oil 1129.56 18.83 0.78

Since it is possible to assemble, mine and melt at the same time, the bottleneck will be smelting and the whole thing would take around 4 weeks8. Don't try it at home.

    Notes:

    1. The bad news is that it is not possible to use a medium electric pole since we are not even researching that, the good news is that you will get another small electric pole for free!
    2. Usually you will also need some of tubes to move the fluids, but for now, let's suppose you found the perfect map where you can connect oil and water to the refinery without tubes.
    3. Assuming an oil field with constant 100% yield. Extracting oil lowers the field's yield by 1% per 300 pumpjack cycles to a minimum of 20% of the initial yield or 2 oil per second, whichever is larger.
    4. At some point it is also possible to stop using fuel and instead make some solar panels.
    5. I didn't took into account the time needed to build, walk, explore or defend the base with your iron axe.
    6. You could reduce this time to 4 days if you can manage to split your job between you and your assembler.
    7. No, you don't even have a burner mining drill
    8. No, you can't sleep, the factory must grow!
    9. Calculated using kirkmcdonald factorio calculator (0.17.6)
    10. As commented below by u/RhoM74reddit this calculation doesn't take into account productivity modules.

Good mods to renew my enjoyment of the game?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 03:52 AM PST

So I woke this morning after dreaming of a game where I use a train to transport oil around and thought "bam, factorio time".

Then I realised that after my first full playthrough im a little bored of the base game, I could play more base game if I had too but what I really want is a big mod which adds new materials, machines, Trains, etc, anybody got a good suggestion?

You know, I love this game but every time I encounter an obstacle these days I just log off and don't want to play anymore. These obstacles could be as small as a freakin lake. Why do I have such low willpower on these games?

Suggestion: adding a shortcut to hide ALL items on belts

    Posted: 26 Feb 2020 07:36 AM PST

Similar to how the "alt" button works but this shortcut (or UI button) working to hide only items on belts (or ground). With mods that add biter loot for example it's easy to have tons of items laying everywhere, making things confusing. Even without mods it would be really great to see what belt type is under those pesky items. Avoiding possible bottlenecks.
