Krastorio2 is making me feel like a total spaghetti noob all over again, which is great. None of my old patterns work; it's refreshing to be so far from optimized that ANY idea is better than the last.

It's not really a complaint, but it's the closest

Krastorio 2: Using greenhouses to create wood as fuel for your boilers == free energy?!

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 05:28 AM PDT

In Krastorio 2, a greenhouse consumes max 155kW.

The recipe for wood is 40 wood every 60 seconds, and each wood has a fuel value of 1MJ.

So that means a greenhouse has input of 155kW, but an output of 667kW! Free energy! I guess some of it must be coming from the sun...

So in theory you don't need to mine coal to power your boilers. It's not very space efficient though. Each boiler consumes 1.5MW, so you need 1.5MW / 667kW = 2.25 greenhouses per boiler. In practice not that useful, but I'm finding it's nice having wood as a short term backup if coal starts to run short.

There's also the energy required to pump water to your greenhouses, but each offshore pump can be powered by 1 wind turbine so no biggy.

idea for unlimited scope factorio maps

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 04:38 AM PDT

    Hi.

If you are developer, thank you a lot for this great game.

I'm also quite sure some other people already had this idea, so sorry if I just repeat it here.

So as far as I understand, the limit of a single factorio map is mostly RAM and CPU speed.

(because of the requirement of determinism it's hard/impossible to parallelize most stuff in factorio)

So my idea is, you could run a factorio world of unlimited scope on multiple servers.

Each server would handle a complete map.

These maps would be connected through "portals".

Basically when some entity enteres the portal, it is removed from world A, and added to the portal.

Then world B will remove the entity from the portal and add it to world B.

Now, this would not be deterministic anymore, and also you don't have the complete gamestate on a single machine.

So what you could do is, just render everything on the server and just stream it to the client

(or stream a list of objects on screen, and just render it on the client, which should reduce data size)

Because factorio doesn't depend on very low input lag/latency like a FPS, I think streaming would be fine.

Also have an idea how a portal could work for a belt.

One the input side, you basically add the items to a FIFO queue.

On the output side, you take the items from the queue.

This way it could handle some amount of network latency and still move items from a belt in world A to world B

(only limitation: the output belt needs a segment that has no connections to it, which depends on the size of the FIFO queue, so when there was a network lag of lets say 100ms, it could then get many items from the queue and put them on this segment in one step)

    just an idea

    Logitech 910 LED issue

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 09:08 AM PDT

It's not really a critical issue, but seemings how it's a Factorio-related issue, I figured the best place to post would be here.

Last month, I bought the keyboard in title and a G502 Lightspeed mouse. When I first started using them, the LEDs on both would change to Factorio colors when the game started and the loading bar effect would come across the keyboard. Awesome! However, sometime in the last few weeks, something happened to where none of those effects happen anymore. I do have both Logitech LED and Razer Chroma support enabled (had those from the get-go). I'm using 0.18.15 and sticking to that one for a while. Also, I do use Logitech G HUB, but I've been using that since I got the new keyboard and mouse. Not sure if it's a mod, but I can get a list of mods I use if you guys need it. Any ideas on what would be causing this issue? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

4-lane Automagic Madzuri-style balancer pickup train station with 4-lanes throughput per train wagon.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 09:56 PM PDT

    !blueprint https://pastebin.com/UWyuC77g

    Thanks Blueprint Bot!!

    Tutorial Image

    Features

    • Roboport for automatic building.
    • Chunk-aligned (trivially, by fitting inside of a chunk). Roboport marks the corner of the chunk if you wish to use in a chunk-aligned manner.
    • Madzuri style balancer, with a twist. Automatically reads items from the belt to self-configure (only works for one item)
    • Benes Network for 4-input to 4-output with full 4-lane throughput. Any combination of inputs can map to any combination of outputs without loss of efficiency.
    • Thanks to the Benes Network, every Wagon has access to all 4-lanes of input bandwidth.
    • Red-Belt based, with easy upgrades (with upgrade planner) to Blue-belts.

    Directions

    1. Place blueprint
    2. Hook up 1, 2, 3, or 4 belts to the inputs in any order, with any level of compression. They must all be the same item however.
    3. Rename train station / hook up to train network.
    4. Start sending trains to pickup stuff. Enjoy the high-speed Madzuri-style buffer as it loads ore-trains in roughly 6 seconds. If the buffers are empty, then enjoy the Benes network which will maximize the loading speed for any given input. The circuits automatically configure this blueprint without any input needed from the user.
