    More compressed trains

Thanks to u/kano96 for the inspiration and sharing his compressed train designs. It wouldn't let me share an image in the replies, so I'm just making a new post to share the results of my last thread:

    Factorio is OCD the game.

Wanna make a new system? Your resources are low. Wanna do something cool? Your previous setup has no space and is more spaghetti than you thought. How am I supposed to get anything done when anything new requires updating old parts of the factory first. I've got about 450 hours now and I can quickly see myself getting burned out fast. What about you guys

    Red Belt 16x16 Inline Balancer

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 10:46 PM PST

After finding /u/raynquist's excellent blue belt 16x15 inline balancer I decided I wanted a red belt version.

Most of it translated just fine, but there were two undergroundies that stretched just a little too far for red belts.

One was a trivial fix, but the other gave me some trouble - I eventually had to extend the length of the whole balancer by one tile so that it's now square at 16x16 tiles.

This is the result of that effort.

Any way to fix my Train fed GC factory? Can't get enough input from insertion...

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 05:53 AM PST

I'm just about to tear down half my factory for some major renovations. Any advice before I do it?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 11:50 PM PST

I'm rebuilding the factory to have more defined districts, better circuit supply and also more pathways so I can actually move around better instead of having to constantly go around pipes and shit. But I don't want to find myself up shit creek without a paddle if it turns out I screw it up.

Some things I've thought of doing:

    • I'll have a ton of storage chests set up so that instead of setting everything on fire, I can just have my robots dump everything in them. Also means I've got less to worry about in terms of shortages when I don't have a working factory.

    • Temporary logistics & circuit workshops so I don't have to worry about running short of anything crucial.

    • Furnaces and mines will remain untouched, along with my main bus.

    • I'm on peaceful mode so I don't have to worry about biters.

Is there anything I've missed I should keep in mind before doing this? Maybe I'm overthinking it but I don't want to do this only to realise "oh crap, this Doodad is vital to rebuilding and I don't have any on hand and they take 1000 minutes each to handcraft, noooo!"

    Bob's Mod pack Rubber?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 07:32 AM PST

What is rubber used for without the bobs electronics mod?

I am currently just getting started to Bob's and from a forum thread I read they recommended that I shouldn't use Bob's electronics on my first time. I made a full belt of rubber but I cant find any use? What is it really used for?

    Multiplayer stuttering issues with VPS

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 06:28 AM PST

Yesterday I setup an Ubuntu VPS on Vultr to host the multiplayer server that my coworkers and I play on, rather than having it hosted on my home PC. It's the $5/month instance, with the following specs:

Location: Chicago (the closest to our physical location that Vultr has)

    CPU: 1 vCore

    RAM: 1024 MB

    Storage: 25 GB SSD

    OS: Ubuntu 18.04 x64

From what I've read online, this should be plenty to run a small-ish Factorio server. When I connect to it and play, I have no issues at all and it works great. However, for my coworkers, it's horrible. They get tons of stuttering and constant "Server is not responding" messages. These issues did not happen when the server was hosted on my home PC.

We all live in the same area, within ~15 miles of each other. We also (with the exception of one guy who lives in the boonies) have great internet connections. The thing I'm most confused about is that it works great for me, but not anyone else.

Thoughts? I read about opening the F5 menu and checking some numbers there, but I won't be able to do that for a few more hours. I can update this post with screenshots if needed.

Without actually checking, is there a way to know which item can be crafted with productivity module?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 09:55 PM PST

I know all intermediate items can take productivity module, but how do you define intermediate? For example an inserter is not considered intermediate, but lots of recipes require it. So what's the deal?
