Artillery turrets are underwhelming… aren't they?

Recently after clearing an area with artillery wagons, I told myself "let's now put down some artillery turrets for clearing a bit more space". I was surprised to find out that artillery turrets have the exact same range as artillery wagons whereas I expected them to fire well further away.

    Why would I think that?

    • They are fixed on the ground, hence feel more "stable" (accentuated by the concrete in their recipe)
    • They look more massive than artillery wagons
    • Artillery wagons have the advantage of mobility compared to them. Somehow I expected a better range from turrets for balancing

Artillery turret: looks fantastic, but is disappointing

So I told myself "Well, okay, let's use them anyway". But then I realized that artillery turrets are actually worse than artillery wagons:

    1. their logistics are more complicated: putting shells in an artillery wagon is just a matter of having a reloading station at some point. On the other hand, artillery turrets are immobile thus the shells must be brought to them
    2. artillery shells have a stack size of one, which means a cargo wagon carries 40 shells whereas an artillery wagon carries 100. So it's more practicable to use the latter for moving shells to an artillery turret. At that point why use the artillery turret when an artillery wagon goes at the same location?
    3. inserters put only 5 shells in an artillery turret, which means if you unload directly from a wagon to an artillery turret, it can only fires 5 times until the next supply. In that regard, a single artillery wagon is equivalent to 20 artillery turrets.
    4. because artillery turrets usually span on large areas, I don't use robots for providing artillery shells (giant robots networks are bad), nor belts (because they become a giant buffer of unused artillery shells, which are quite expensive). I use trains. But then artillery wagons are better.

Artillery wagon: looks fantastic, because it is

And then I noticed that I rarely saw artillery turrets in community designs or streams / videos, but more often saw the Big Bertha equivalents. So I think that artillery turrets could benefit from a boost in comparison to artillery wagons. That is either nerf artillery wagons or improve artillery turrets in some way. Those are only suggestions:

    • Decrease artillery wagons' range or increase artillery turrets' range
    • Or increase the stack size of shells so that a cargo wagon can carry more than an artillery wagon
    • Or increase the area of effect of artillery turrets
    • suggest you ideas

Note that artillery wagons are more expensive and have less health, but that does not seem to be enough.

    What do you guys think?

TL;DR Artillery turrets are rarely used because artillery wagons are often a better option.

    Electric locomotives are scary

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 05:07 AM PST

    Electric locomotives are scary

Speed: 864 km/h (max 4 locomotive speed modules)

There is space for more 4 locomotive speed modules, but I bet the trains would reach the Mach 1 speed limit.

I mean it reduces the number of trains for supply network....

but I bet crossing the railway will increase the mortality rate

I have currently 220+ trains running in network and I don't know if remaking the trainstop for bigger trains (from 2-5-2 to 3-10-3) is viable or just using electric locomotives and giving my power supply a beatdown is better.

    Best RAM for Factorio

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 05:11 AM PST

I was already looking at upgrading my gaming computer, but in light of the recent FFF showing that Factorio is memory latency bound, I was wondering what would provide better UPS?

    DDR4-2400 CL 12 vs DDR4-3200 CL 14-16

I'm guessing the higher bandwidth is going to beat out such a small difference in timings, but is that true?

    Belt Item Throughput help needed

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:21 AM PST

Hi, I am currently trying to optimize my personal blueprints for throughput but its hard to guess if i compressed a belt to the max.

Is there a way to calculate items/second throughput on a belt with logistic in vanilla? I found only blueprints either not working in 0.17 or with non vanilla parts.

    Thanks for your help.

The perfect menu for coop modded server

    Hello Engineers

we are a bunch of friends who have completed a couple of times the game. We come from (heavy) modded Minecraft, our previous experience with Factorio Mods was limited to QoL mod but it's time for us to fight The Beast. My biggest doubt is the main course: Bobs + Angels or Industial Revolution?

Which side dish would you accompany? And don't forget the wine

Jokes aside I can't say we choose both the playthrough because the required time to complete the game is far beyond our possibility.

Let me apologize for my bad spelling and thank you Engineers for your support!

Can items in bot transit be counted in a circuit network?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 12:48 AM PST

Hopefully the title is somewhat self explanatory...but I know the logistics bot system tracks items in transit, but can you somehow include that signal within a circuit network?

EG if there is 100 plates in the chest plus another 50 in transit, I want a signal output of 150.

I was getting 11 FPS on factorio than i downloaded Razer Cortex and it boosted it up to 17-18 fps. Is there any more ways that i can boost my fps or make my pc better?
