Another take on this style of design. Mostly aesthetics. No modules added. No beacons.
    Replicate for more total throughput.

Logistic settings are to raise the barrel levels to 1,000 for each liquid except petrol which is set to 10,000.

Looks like this when finished. Hookups: Red = Oil, Blue = Water

    The basic blueprint. One side.

Thanks for the Amazing Linux Support

Not sure if this is the right place for it but I just wanted to say thank you to the devs for not just providing amazing linux support, but also making it amazingly easily to just install the game and get playing. Factorio is the game that I've had the most seamless experience with - I don't have to tinker with the graphics to make it work in i3, fullscreen or not, I don't have to change any drivers, etc. etc. Even the mod experience is seamless, as all I need to do is sync mods with my cloud save and it runs like a dream.

This is critical to me since I'm a reckless newbie running Arch, which means I clean install almost every week. In my experience this makes most games unplayable especially with mods, due to the annoyance of endless reinstalls. Factorio is the only exception, and thus the only game I regularly play.

I don't know what goes on in the dev side, but thank you for all the work and for making this game a dream to play and install.

(Some of the in progress metal production part of) my current base, just because. Please excuse the atrocities

Running into weird crashes with train pathing

Make a new world, get stuck, rinse repeat...

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 11:10 PM PST

So, its been strange, I do do this with a lot of things but I know that I want to complete this game. I have yet to, I've got almost 200 hrs and apart from trains I know very well how everything works (for some reason I just cant understand trains). I either forget about the world and when I come back to it eventually I end up just making a new world because I don't remember where I left off or realised it wasn't right. I also end up stopping it because the play through didn't go as intended and for whatever reason I don't make the effort to change what I didn't think was going as smoothly as possible.

The big question is how do I stop stopping everything I start to just repeat the cycle over and over?

and also I really do suck at trains so help with that would be appreciated to I guess please and thank you...

After several rocket launch worlds, I'll try to do a 5K SPM Cityblock Mega-Base named Klendathu

After several rocket launch worlds, I'll try to do a 5K SPM Cityblock Mega-Base named Klendathu

I've decided to try to build a 5K SPM Mega-Base using a Cityblock style. Since I am also doing it in Survival I've added a few mods to make things a little easier (Bobs Mining, Miniloaders, Warehouses, LTN, PowerArmor MK3 & MK4, Dectorio and a few other minor ones). My limit so far has been 10-20 rocket launches total in a world so a 5K SPM (launch every 12 seconds) it a daunting goal (already up to 30 launches in the world, a personal record). I really don't know how it'll affect my FPS/UPS. Being a fan of Starship Troopers (yes, I read the book decades ago) I picked "an ugly planet, a bug planet" named Klendathu. The main buss part is long over and getting a launch every 40 minutes with that so I have the white science available to speed up bots and enhance mining drills. Currently in 35 hours. Wish me luck!

Proof of concept: EC with bots and trains.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 08:00 PM PST

I'm looking into combining bots with trains for some areas of my factory. It occurred to me that I didn't really know what the limitations for that sort of setup were, so I decided to test it out in creative mode.

    The test environment:

The bot-based EC build I'm using is limited by the throughput of the stack inserters moving CW. This means each AM3 making EC operates slightly slower than it could, producing a maximum of 12.92 EC/s. I'm using 3-4 trains with nuclear fuel because that is the 4-wagon configuration with the fastest time to clear the station. I'm using 12 stack inserters per wagon for loading and unloading. This configuration should load/unload the train in ( 8000 / ( 12 x 27.69 ) = ) 24.08 seconds. After adding in the time to clear the station, 2.18 seconds, we can estimate that we should need to produce 73k EC/min to be able to constantly load trains.

    Results:

It took approximately 48 minutes for the 98 AM3 making EC to fill the buffer chests used for loading the EC train wagons. After that, the trains could only sustain 68k EC/min. I theorize that this is due to the signal spacing which, unavoidably, introduces additional time for the following trains to get into position and begin loading. Doubling the time to clear the intersection (once for the train leaving and once for the train entering) produces an estimate much closer to the observed results.

    Conclusion:

Reversing the math, we can estimate that we need to produce 17,000 items/min/wagon when the item has a stack size of 200. This number will vary based on train size and L-C ratio. Trains with suboptimal acceleration will reduce this number, while longer trains with optimal acceleration will increase it. Also, it took about 5000 bots to run the whole setup.
