Lazy Bastard is the weirdest, best, and most infuriating experience in Factorio

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 10:01 AM PDT

Doing the Lazy Bastard achievement is really fun and, at the same time, extremely frustrating, to the point of being unnerving.

I didn't have any trouble with the mechanics of it--I know exactly what to do, but all my bad habits are flushed out. Every little failure to plan costs a run back to the hub or plopping an assembler if I'm near a wire. Not a big deal near the base, but setting up oil outposts gets interesting.

I'm about to begin blue science and it's taken me at least twice as long to get to this point. I will never do this achievement again, but I think it's the best one in the game and the one I'll be most proud of.

What I learned in Factorio is....

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 08:35 PM PDT

Just launched my first rocket after...81 hours. Oh boy. Oberservations thus far:

    • I love how many references the devs baked in

    • I did the spaghetti belt method and dear lord was that a bad plan. Each step seemed so logical but by the end I was seriously considering scrapping the whole thing to rebuild

    • More mines than I think I need. More steel than I think I need

    • Honestly, just more of everything. I'm going to need it all eventually, right?

    • I'm feeling the burnout. Does this mean I can sleep now?

    • Spidertron is a lot of fun, but I wish it had a patrol method of some sort. To the mod pages!

    • I finally got my trains working!

    • What does one do with all the extra solid fuel and explosives? I had a lot of both that I just didn't use. (Granted, next run will have better rocket fuel planning so that may solve it)

    • Tanks are fun. Tanks with laser defenses....ooo yeah.

    • Beacons might be useful next time?

    • Save up the research bottles.

    • I kept waiting for experience orbs when removing stuff from furnaces/machines. Oops, wrong game

    Time for map #2!

edit: thought of a couple more

Can biters expand inside your walled territory?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 06:10 AM PDT

Does a biter need to wander off to create a new nest? Thought I saw this to be the case but might be wrong.

Either way they cannot come into your walled off areas can they?

    pY clustorio project

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 06:34 AM PDT

One of my friends and I are about to "finish" pY (about being in the next few months). And we were toying with the idea of mega basing to about 1k spm using clustorio. Has anyone ever given something like that a go? And are there any decently experienced pY players that might be interested in participating?

    What does "Products 1-2x" mean

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 05:19 AM PDT

This is a technical question, how is it processed in the background?
To understand where i am coming from, if i have multiple recipes that yield 1-2, are they expected to yield about the same? Here are the 2 possible implementations i see fit.

    1. x-y - Every value from MIN to MAX has equal chance of happening, meaning equal distribution
    2. There are weighted chances for each value from MIN to MAX.

I ran a quick test in sandbox mode, with 5k items processed and my standard-deviation was about 300, which seems fine.

However, i am not sure how this is implemented and how modders access this. Since i know uranium has a rather low chance (1% or so) of being a 235 one. So, there kinda the same mechanism there. 1 recipe and a variation of yield.

So, to be more specific - does x-y means equally distributed, a percentage value means it is uneven? Can a modder disguise an uneven yield as a x-y recipe?

Put up lower frequency than 17% for ores?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 07:24 AM PDT

Hello, thisi s a weird place to ask but lately I have been loving rail world maps, at least months ago, now with RSO i am seeing that resources are still too close for me, I tend to make big bases and would like to connect big bases with trains but they are so close. I want to make a world with 5% frequency on ores but I cannot push that setting lower than 17%, is there a way to modifiy this?

    Builders block

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 08:05 PM PDT

Hey, I have just been struggling to find what to do next in factorio since I don't know how to expand my factory any more than it currently is but I also know I have so much more to go, im just looking for some motivation to keep growing the factory. I just researched oil processing and im not really sure on how to automate it at all since I don't have much space near where the train brings the oil in.

First megabase within reach...what's a logical next step?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 06:25 AM PDT

I'm producing a steady 500 SPM at the moment, and still as a noob to the game it's a thing of beauty. 2 months ago I thought you guys were all crazy with these megabases, but for the first time I can see megabase potential, and cracktorio is in full effect. My starter base has reached its limits due to space constraints. I've broken out separate red and green circuit factories, which is working very well. I can see that the starter base will likely end up being my mall and launching rockets, with everything else separate.

So I'm not stuck, but I'm pondering my next move. Science packs will clearly be a bottleneck. Purple and yellow are my chronic offenders, so I'm thinking about creating separate factories for those and bringing the bottles in by train. While I'm at it, I may just separate research from the starter base entirely, in the interest of scalability.

TL;DR: for those of you doing 1,000+ SPM, I'd love to hear your experiences and lessons learned as you transitioned from starter base to megabase. Thanks!
