Blue Belts of Science: 2.7k SPM Belts only Base

    Hello Fellow Engineerios

Today I present you my first successful megabase I was working on the last months. After 2 failed attempts with train bases and the recent upgrade to belt optimization, I decided to go full blue belts. Bots were only used for construction and delivery of construction items. A single train was used for personal transport between mall and construction site. All production is done by belt (and pipes).

I followed the build order in this graph from Kirk's calculator. Each item is build in his own block. Each row is designed to either consume or produce full blue belts, stacked together to save on beacons. All output belts are first bundled togehter before distribution to next blocks. This led to some "interesting" designs, like 96 belts of copper wire taking a U turn (pictures below). It hurts.

    World settings:
    - no biters, no pollution: just let me build in peace and save some UPS
    - rich and frequent ressources: I knew outpost building would be painful without trains
    - Pure Vanilla, no QoL mods. Some builds were tested in world editor

Here are some pictures as album:

    Proof

Technically, it should be enough for 2.7k SPM, but satellites/white science is bottlenecking. I had to add several extra belts of some items, due to distribution problems. Splitting 1 belt into e.g. 0.4 / 0.6 doesn't work well without backpressure.

Turned Factorio on after more than a year or so... I thought I was too good for a tutorial. That was a lie.

    Defending while expanding.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 08:15 AM PDT

Do I have to put walls and turrets around every single outpost that I build when I expand? Honestly that is what hinders me the most from exploring and building far away. It gets incredibly tedious especially when I have to run back to my main base and grab more supplies mid-build just to have my new outpost be overrun by biters mid-build.

My take on sushi blocks - auto measuring and balancing

My take on sushi blocks - auto measuring and balancing

    sushi block

When I first saw sushi blocks on this sub I got excited over the idea. I really wanted to try it. I was kidna dissapointed when I did - it was so tedious. Each inserter connected to network with conditions, managing how many items you want in circulation (which changes when newtwork grows) and biggest of all - errors in setup introducing errors to network state. bleh. This designs main purpose was to make sushi blocks easier to work with - just stamp the damn blueprint and move on.

Every 5th block is a measuring station. Each mesuring station measures throughput of neighbouring belts, and reports it with frequency equal to time it takes an item to do full round around the block. There is a "brain" that collects and normalizes all of this to percentage, so for example I can tell that more or less 10% of belts throughput is iron plates. Then with single constant combinator I request throughput coverage by signals like "iron plate - 10". Each block has power switch in it and all power poles in that block are connected only to it, if theres too much of what block produces on the belts - whole block goes offline.

Different ways of playing the game

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 08:20 AM PDT

My first couple of worlds were with a friend who had played a bit, so he took care of biters mostly. Later when I played other worlds i always turn of enemy bases because I just wanted to build compact perfect ratio productions, and the game let me. For me it was enough of thinking I didn't need biters as a concern.

Yesterday I started a world with my old friend and biters and in my opinion it less fun. This could be because I'm unfamiliar with biters and don't know what to do which leads to frustrating times.

I will probably continue playing without biters, i still get achievements from it and the game feels full fleshed for me. I wonder how many prefer with or without biters

Have you finished your first run with the help of internet guides or played / discovered things only by yourself?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 08:43 PM PDT

I'm pretty new to the game (15hrs +- of gameplay) and I always try to discover things myself, at least for the first run of a game (until I see the credits at least one time)

While I enjoyed playing Factorio, I'm not nearly as addicted as people say they were the first time they played it (oc it is a matter of taste, but anyways), and I just thought that it might be because I'm trying to "solo" it

I just feel that I'm taking too long to get things done, and I'm pretty sure that since I'm focusing only the rocket silo research tree, I might get overwhelmed by the bitters sometime (but I didn't see any other new players with the same problem XD)

I mean, it is pretty cool to discover things yourself (imo), but it really starts to fell like a job (calculating ratios, optimizing modules / mining / pollution etc) and it seems to be taking too long

I just wanted to read your opinion on the matter, if you used some helper mods / internet guides your first run, etc... And do you think that using guides / helpers for calculating ratios would ruin the game?

Do you think that calculating production numbers is a part of the "essence" of the game?

PS: First time posting, sorry if any mistakes on post tags or text is bad written

    Un-researching bonus

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 03:59 AM PDT

So I removed a mod that gave me 10 extra logistics trash slots, and I want to get rid of these extra slots. Is there any way to remove the bonus (through commands or file editing)? The mod in question is 'even distribution'.

My game has been crashing for seemingly no reason and I would really appreciate some help! I've been trying to access the factorio forums on their website but none of the seem to want to load and I want to get the game up and running before they get their websites back online. I'll attach what they said they want posted in the forum here just cause. what can I do to get my game up and running again?

For context: running Factorio1.1.32 on a Macbook loaded with Big Sur 11.2.1. mods included.

I appreciate any help in advance!

    Splitter input/output priorities question

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 03:30 AM PDT

    Splitter input/output priorities question

Hi, quick question - i have 2 belts merged into one and I would like to take from top belt first, and only if there is nothing on top belt - take from bottom one. I think this could be done using splitter input/output priorities. To my understanding - if I set input priority on one side - it will be utilising this side first.

    https://i.redd.it/es5wrhbcn3v61.gif

But for some reason it's not working. On the picture - there is splitter with input priority on top side and output priority on bottom. On the top belt there are still items, and for some reason inserters are placing something on bottom belt.

Is there some possibility to fully utilise one side of splitter, and, if there is nothing left - take from other side?

(Maybe it's because the bottom side of output belt is full, but in this case - please point me to a blueprint/image with needed behaviour)

    Thanks!
