    A new players diary

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 11:48 PM PST

So, I started this up having only heard like stories about it, never having really looked too deeply into it before. I got the concept. Make factory, factory make more factory, enemies bad, rube goldberg machines.

Here is my diary for the last few days of play

Day 1: Upset the established order

I probably should have played the tutorial. Oh well fuck it. Resources? Coal burning coal miners are cool. If I run 3 coal burners they produce enough coal for me to load 5 iron burners and 2 copper burners and 4 smelters and keep them all going as I run back and forth loading coal, unloading and reloading ore, unloading plates, and figuring out a next step. Oh I need power. Ok, water pump made, lots of pipes made, water piped in, boiler made, steam engine made, laboratory made. Research starts as I gather raw materials and set basic red researches to craft. Walk too far exploring, run into biters nest, realize I do not know how to shoot my gun, die. Googled how to shoot things. Got my corpse loot. Began gun upgrades because fuck that shit. Up to 8 smelters, 3 copper miners, 8 iron miners, and 5 coal miners and 4 assemblers. Conveyer belts: 0

Day 2: What are inserters for?

I am so goddamn tired of loading coal. DID YOU SEE HOW FUCKING FAST THE BOILER GOES THROUGH IT FUCK!!! Ok I have power, conveyer down, loop around, inserter, coal now generates itself. Snake coal line past miners, add miners, replace boxes for output with conveyers, put boxes at end of conveyers to accumulate stored resources.

Run resources to assembler. More furnaces, more belts, more guns, more ammunition. More power for more assemblers. Every belt is half empty, oh well, lots of burners in a row whatever.

Attempted to destroy a nest. Died horribly. Made some turrets and ammo, set up turret defenses near hive, murdered hive. Huh turrets are pretty damn good.

Day 3: MORE STEEL! I MUST FEED THE BEAST MORE STEEL!!!!

Research. All the research. I'm not using half of this yet but researrrrrchhhhh I must know it all. Tired of running supplies to assemblers, up to 8 of them now, 4 constantly making research materials. Snake materials to the side, set up massive lab complex, built backwards from the lab complex almost to the smelters.

Running low on ores. Lots stored, but not enough coming out for production. Added 30 burners to steel line. Added 10 to coal. Snaked coal line around entire base. Burners everywhere. Still not enough, more burners on second steel patch nearby, I had to snake the coal line around an entire new area.

Oil found and started, I immediately began making rocket launchers.

Day 4: It folds in on itself

Green research starting. Fucking hell I need more copper, green circuits are a pain. Set up "steal boxes" to bank resources all over the place so I have an endless supply of basic resources. Steal boxes interfering with production...I guess I should make one of these electric mining things I researched on day 1.

    Boiler population explodes.

Moar coal snaking. Hmm need gears, no room for extra assemblers, snake gears up and add production on the back end. Gear steal box.

And we need EVEN MORE STEEL. Splitters begin to get used, and after setting up green research production all the old smelters get replaced with steel smelters. Mining opens up until the belts are flooded, adding smelters as I go.

Try to kill a nest again. Die horribly. Fucking spitters.

    Day 5: Wahoo!

Red and green only research done. Time to expand to blue and black research. The base grows like an amorphous blob consuming the surrounding cityscape, swelling obscenely to encompass yet another steel deposit. Notice some parts of steel line are empty, others full. Snake steel line around base to connect in a circle, do the same with coal. The gears are piling up now the storage got filled...and now we're dumping endless conveyor belts into a box.

Hmm. We have engine parts. What are these for besides research? Black research is going, with extra production of magazines and grenades to stockpile weapons.

    Now we have a car.

Cue about 45 minutes of giggling as I speed around alien hives gunning them down as I try to dodge acid spit, if the car dies so do I. I now have modular armor and a shield, rocket launcher, flamethrower, and a machinegun that never runs dry. Make 7 cars. Lose 5. Begin saving before hive. Learned I can repair things, well that would have helped about 4 cars ago.

Day 6: The best offense is a good defense

Well now the biters are an actual problem. They wrecked two areas. Grabbed an inventory worth of supplies and made 50 gun turrets. Already have boxes full of ammo waiting. I like gun turrets, I got walls started next. But they always seemed to attack a bit different spot. Lots of gun turrets everywhere, base walled in. Began blue chip construction, but 50 thousand delays. Modernize factory eliminating burners, switched to red belt use most places, MOAR STEEL, snake snake snake, learn to use conveyer lanes.

More biters. Alright time to start an arms line. Tank shells, red magazines, yellow magazines, rockets, gun turrets. Entire base is now ringed in gun turrets. Safe. Oh, those needed to be reloaded. Good thing I've got 500 spare turrets in a box and yellow magazines being turned out at 3 locations on the base.

FINALLY get blue microchip line set up. Have nothing to do with them yet. I have 1000 of them in a box.

    Day 7:

I made a tank. I filled my tank with explosive rounds, napalm, and magazines. Every biter base within a mile of my base is now gone.

    I like my tank.

Every research that requires red, green, black, and blue is done. I have barely looked at oil, haven't even mined uranium much less figured out what to do with it, and know the next research material uses train parts so trains here I come. I should be pretty safe from biters for a while with a tank patrol every once in a while. I heard there are mortars. I need to go look for mortars.

    An idea for lubricant use

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 04:01 AM PST

Lube is used in very few recipes, only blue belts and electric engines. 1k spm megabase uses about 40 units per second, compared to sulfuric acid (~380 units plus more for uranium) or petroleum (over 3k units per second).

What if, there was another tier for assembler that uses lubricant? I think it is more interesting than just "another tier that is a bit faster" implemented by some mods, also it won't make lower tier assemblers obsolete, making it more of an alternative.

Is factorio the first game to use the factorio formula in its gameplay?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 03:19 AM PST

seeing how much games nowadays copy factorio's gameplay style i wonder how much of that is fully original or did parts of this system came from other games before factorio like most system do

    Low framerate issues on v1.1.21

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 04:33 AM PST

Alright so, I downloaded the v1.1.21 version yesterday, and I've been having framerate issues.I have an i3 6006 and Ge Force 920M 2gb, so you could say my pc can't handle it. But, v1.0 ran perfectly. I created a new factory in v1.0 when I finished my old one, and I am producing around 400k iron plates per hour, and it runs at 60fps all the time. But, I download v1.1 and suddenly the fps drops to around 30-40. It never goes below 30, and if I walk outside of the factory and go to some wasteland where there is nothing on the screen, it goes up to 45-50 max. I see that it could either be new graphics, and I doubt this because the GPU usage is hardly ever above 40%, and CPU usage is hardly ever about 50% or so. Have in mind that on v1.0 the same factory runs at 60 fps, and on v1.1.21 it runs at 30-40fps. I tried reducing the graphical settings to the lowest, and tweaking all the options, none increased or decreased my frame rate. And I ran the game at max settings in v1.0 anyway, only disabling all smoke because I had a nuclear reactor near some machinery so I disabled the smoke.

    So, to sum it up:

    1. I doubt it's my specs, as the game runs full 60fps on v1.0

Please, if anyone has any idea on how to fix this, respond.

I would be extremely glad if you'd help out a fellow Engineer.
