Thank you Factorio, for reuniting me with my cousin

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 09:08 AM PST

Like the title says, I have a cousin who I haven't seen or talked to in more than 30 years. For reasons that I won't go into, we ended up on the phone last week. It was a nice conversation, but when I hung up I got that feeling like we'd maybe talk once a year.

A few texts went back and forth, and he mentioned a video he made about Factorio and asked if I've ever heard of it. Yeah, I've heard of it but I'm not mentioning my hours of play because that's a long ass time in RL. Anyway, one thing led to another, I spun up a server for us, and we played last night.

It was great. We reminisced about old times. We killed some biters. We sort of felt out how each other played. By the end we were laughing at each other and having a blast. It was the ultimate ice breaker. Most importantly we played way too long and until way too late, the way it should be. This is going to be a regular occurance.

So, thank you Factorio and thank you Wube for making Factorio. You made a place for estranged cousins to find common ground after 30 years.

My favourite thing about Factorio is how there are always problems

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 10:30 PM PST

Even when you've launched a rocket and you've got a massive base producing thousands of things a second, there are still problems. You need more LDS for your rocket so you improve that production but oh no! This new production is gobbling up more copper than you can give it so you need to get more copper. And to get more copper you need to clear out some biter bases. To clear out some biter bases you need to get Spidertrons and artillery range upgrades. ARUs cost Space Science which you need to launch a rocket for, which as mentioned before, you need more LDS and copper for. So you have to start making an assembly line for Spidertrons and you have to make a platform where you equip Spidertrons with tools to build outposts or armour to destroy nests.

The point is that even when you've "finished" the game, there's always more stuff to do. It never ends and I love it. With other games once you get to the end you're pretty much decked out and doing shit is just a boring monotonous click and problem solved. But Factorio always introduces new problems with problems in problems and a million different solutions and approaches.

Speaking of approaches, I love how there isn't a set in stone "best" way to do anything. Take military for example. I used to use the combat shotgun and then in another world I used the flamethrower and in another world I used the rocket launcher. They're all great options for weapons and none of them are OP (rocket launcher with nuke is arguably better than the others but still). I think I changed my approach each time depending on the resources available to me. In the shotgun world, oil was probably scare whereas in the flamethrower world, oil was everywhere.

TIL that there's a scorpion named after Factorio for a wholesome reason.

I just found out that one of the fathers of the devs was one of the scientists who discovered a new species of scorpion and named it after Factorio.

    Pyanodon or PyBlock ?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 02:32 AM PST

    Hi everyone !

Dyson Sphere Program was nice but i need to punish myself... So... I'm hesitating between Pyanodon and PyBlock right now. Do you have any advice for me? :)

Moreover, since 1.1, the ores in the starting area are excessively stuck in Pyanodon. How to separate them? Apart from going back to 0.18...

    Thanks,

Does anyone else think that making Refinery assemblies is incredibly satisfying?

Having the opposite of the usual problem: I can only play in short sessions

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 11:57 PM PST

I've got about 400 hours, never beaten the game but have made it fairly close (chronic restarting habit :/). But lately the crushing complexity of the game has been weighing on me whenever I open it, to the point where I can only complete small objectives (expand smelting a little, extend the bus a little, etc) over about 20 minutes before the immensity of the task begins crushing me and I have to quit.

I'm not sure what changed, but whereas before I would usually tackle challenges head-on until I had to do something else, now I'm almost afraid to advance my factory because it means more struggle. Does anyone else suffer this? I'm sure I'll get over it eventually and go back to my old motivated ways but I'm wondering how common this pressure is

Random names appeared in admin list

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 11:35 AM PST

We just started playing this awesome game with some friends. Last night i was hosting the game (Steam option selected only, password protected with no so easy password and no one we don't know joined from what we have seen only us three . I remember seeing a real short green bar in the middle of the screen couple of times (thought connection issue) but have not seen any map downloads/new user in map etc.). Today while starting hosting the game i was going to add their account names to the admin list and voila! there were two names i don't know added already next to my account name "big k" and "kovarex".

Could this be a known bug etc. ? Since one of the names was kovarex??? and we were three and there were 3 names in the list.
Can people somehow add themselves as admin after joining my game ? Lua commands was limited to admins only , should i worry about anything ? Thanks a lot for replies.

    Finally lost my spoon

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 11:30 AM PST

Finally got that one achievement I was scared to claimed for a long time. I didn't want to get too hard on myself, so I've increased starting area to max and removed cliffs, but left ore patches default (I always max them and no need to expand for resources for a long time takes some fun away from me).

    Cut it pretty close there

I expected it to be a bit easier to be honest, given I've got almost 1000h on clock. Apparently, like lazy bastard, 'speedrunning' requires completely different approach that I wasn't used to.

Definitely helped that I used to restart often and had some idea on how to quickly build automatic smelting. I also went for mini bus system, where I had one belt of most important resources. As for the mall, I created just two little sections. Straight, yellow belts (which later on I expanded with red belt assembler). Second one was multi purpose setup for making assemblers, yellow inserters and occasional drills. Oh, and when I started with oil, I've got myself two assemblers just to always have some pipes available.

    Tiny assembly area

Had a big starting zone, so until end, biters didn't even notice me. You can see on the screenshoot, there still some space before pollution would spread in uncharted teritories.

The all seeing eye of bad smells

I've had pretty good timing on when to connect new iron and copper patches. Extra coal was required almost immediately after first 10 boilers were up and running with all the smelting going on. This is due to small starting coal patch. I've had a split second when I wanted to do the trains, but decided to keep it simple and just dragged a long piece of belt all the way back to my bus.

    Without the smell

    Entire base

Last two hours were a bit tough. First I've had to upgrade belts running from outposts to red as the bus was getting pretty starved. First copper, then iron, when I had to redirect my plates to steel production when purple hit me with vast rail consumption (and there were just 5 assemblers doing purple!). I was getting nervous wondering if I'll be fine, but luckily I managed to stabilize the situation.
At this point I started gathering rocket resources, added couple buffer chests for low density structures and began concrete production for silo.

To help myself a bit, I've stolen couple productivity modules from purple, so that the silo could take a bit less resources.

In the end I guess it went pretty fine given that I improvised most of the builds - I'm used to big outposts which I tailor for hours. This was definitely a refreshing experience!

Thank you Wube for the game that keeps surprising me after all these hours.

Also great respect for all the speed runners out there. I'm always shocked how they launch the rocket while I'm there sitting comfy, crafting chemical science packs :D

The 210 ways you can combine modules

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 03:44 PM PST

The update changed productivity modules to feature different penalties on speed, thus being more useful in early stages, but this also adds to the way speed modules balance them.

I wondered how many combinations there are. Assuming 7 module option (None, P1, P2, P3, S1, S2, S3) = m and 4 slots =s it would theoretically be 74 = 2401. However, since there are redundant combinations and order doesn't matter it is much less:

    Number of combinations = 210

I'd be interested in calculating these numbers but my formulas using nPr or nCr don't quite add up or work for other combinations, so I'm am not entirely sure. I am sure of the 210 because I originally got to this number because I went ahead and wrote a short EXCEL macro that would produce all combination and write all non-redunant ones into a table.

The point is that using the calculated speed and productivity factors allows to fine-tune setups, possibly changing the number of required buildings, or otherwise possibly save some power or input material.

An example: Green circuits have a 2:3 assembler ratio with wires. Productivity and/or speed modules can change the numbers to a 1:2 or 2:1 ratio. E.g. a 1:1 ratio is possible when using tier 3 assemblers using 4xP3 on the Circuits (3x0.5/s consumption rate = 1.5/s) and P2P3P3P3 on the wires (2x0.765/s=1.53/s). A 4xP3 setup on the wires would be too slow (2x0.7/s), and other combinations may overproduce.

Likewise it can be useful to use speed modules to e.g. compensate the speed tradeoff of productivity modules, and restoring output rates while saving input material. An S1 (+20%) can account for 2 P2 (2x-10%), an S3 (+30%) accounts for 2 P3s (2x-15%) without changing the ratios. Also empty slots can be filled using efficiency modules to save some power.

I'm providing the baseline data for all combinations below (I omitted factored results). The input and output still need to be factored using the recipes and baseline crafting speeds.

Adjusted input: amount/time x crafting speed x speed factor Adjusted output: amount/time x crafting speed x speed factor x prod. factor

Beacon bonused are added to the speed factor, e.g. +0.5 for a 2xS3 beacon, or

adjusted speed factor = speed factor + n x (50% x (beacon module bonus sum))

Below is the datatable. The intent is to be a lookup table to guide and inform decisions on combinations.
