That moment when perfected factorio art is lost to data corruption

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:33 PM PST

Just a vent here hoping for some karmic sympathy.. so I just finished a masterpiece if a blueprint - basically a super asthetically pleasing, very well balanced, "planet seed" 100x100 square city block for krastorio 2 and space exploration mods. in short, it's for when you land on a new planet, you place it down and BOOM you have 4 core mining drills all going at full capacity and creating the means to shoot excess resources off to other planets in an instant, While also making fuel to send you back home. It even had support for the "mobile factory mod" which has additional fluids and resources on the line coming from the core mining drill. It was balanced, organized, mostly symmetrical... It was functional beauty.

And RIGHT BEFORE I SAVED THE BLUEPRINT, THE FILE GOT CORRUPTED! I saved and logged out, but decided to turn it back on to save the blueprint JUST IN CASE and that's when I found out it was corrupted. Now I'm back to square 1....

Well dang... At least I know how I want it to look.....

If your interested, when I recreate it I'll post my brian child of a blueprint for your approval ;)

Pros/Cons of LTN vs. Vanilla train systems?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:35 AM PST

LTN seems like it's way too much a pain to use for anything else than small, specific logistics requests like keeping your walls stocked with construction bots, repair packs, wall pieces, etc.

It's spilled on my friend who uses it all the time like 10 times this game, and I think I've had 2-3 spills my entire factorio career (in bits in pieces since around when it came out).

Is LTN even worth it? I'm thinking of just leaving a few things setup to LTN, and the rest to regular systems with filter miniloaders as a redundancy to prevent spills which we should've built in already.

    What's the pros/cons of LTN?

Just introduced a friend to factorio

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:31 PM PST

Just introduced a good friend to factorio yesterday, and I was sitting on discord with him while he was doing the tutorial. It was all going great, until I heard him say "ah shoot am I going to have to automate this?"

I had to mute myself I was laughing so hard XD

    My Military Science layout

I’m pretty sure there is a mod that allows you to disconnect power connections on power poles so they’re not connecting to other power poles that you don’t want them to and (I think) wire them up manually.

I think I have seen the mod and what it's name is but I just can't remember what it's name is.

    Base Defense [Vanilla]

    Base Defense [Vanilla]

My glorious 7th factory has fallen.

Many things were learned, many achievements made, many new things learned. I was able to get complex train setups working (mostly), get further in research than ever before, and learned how robots work and was able to automate more than ever before.

This run however, I learned bugs have a green (behemoth) form and I can't seem to stop them.

My somewhat simple blueprint for base defenses just gets smashed by waves of 50+ bugs with green biters leading the charge.

Used a double wall front, and a repeating pattern of turret, turret, laser. Turrets are belt fed with red ammo. In front of the double wall, added a 2nd double wall, and wall 'wedges' to thin out the charges... but it didn't seem to help. In problem areas, I would add a second level of pure laser turrets.

    https://preview.redd.it/j6sqtzn114b61.png?width=550&format=png&auto=webp&s=08509579422e982f8eabf4a7884ba6fc9dedf3a7

The last couple waves broke all the walls, and were destroying turrets faster than robots could replace them. I was losing 100+ walls, 30+ turrets, 50+ robots, inserters & belts with every charge.

I had researched mortars, but hadn't even had a chance to figure them out before taking two massive waves that collapsed my base.

I've been trying to do spoiler free, or mostly so, but restarting ... I have no idea how to handle this.

    Any advice would be welcome.

Ratio for solar panels vs accumulators

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:03 AM PST

I'm running my base on solar power only, and I can't really figure how to calculate how many of each I need. So far I got 4.6 K solar panels and 8.7K accumulators and I have a capacity for 44GJ. It seems sufficient with the 14 steam engines from start game, but I would like to know the exact ratio, so I can optimise th production. I read somewhere, that the ratio is 25 Solar Panels to 21 Accumulators. Is that the right ratio? That seems not right, sinca I can rely on what I got allready.

Using Multiplayer for a single player game?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:37 AM PST

I'm currently doing a space-ex run and despite managing everything remotely, having mostly automated interplantetary logistics and setting up various combinator boondoggles to try to draw my attention to problems, it's just tough to keep track of everything that is going on. I get focused on what I'm working on and something goes wrong out of sight, or I swap to another planet to fix something there and forget what I was working on elsewhere.

I was thinking of making it multiplayer game and joining it from a second computer or running in windowed mode on a side monitor just so I could keep multiple satnav views open to watch multiple things at once. The players chars themselves idle.

Probably build a giant lamp based dashboard somewhere that would just be up at all times.

Anyone else tried this, or got a better idea?

What are some good alternatives to the Main Bus base

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:57 PM PST

for a bit of context, I am a new factorio player, but the concept that factorio is builtult around (machines, automation whatnot) isn't a "new" concept. However, it seems that when people are building bases, the most common type of transportation instruction is the main bus setup. More a nerd question than practical, but what are some good alternative approaches to base building without a main bus?

Also if anyone is interested in the map seed that I am using here it is:
