After a hour of messing around with circuits, trying to understand how they work.. I ended up with this.

Is there a way to switch train to automatic without entering train user interface?

I would like to hover my mouse over train and press a key to switch between manual and automatic mode.

    Is it possible?

What is the best layout for labs?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 03:34 AM PST

I have been experimenting with different layouts for my labs and ways to transfer the science packs into them and between them. I have landed on this layout but the bottleneck is ofc the input. What should I do?

PS. I can naturally just replace the input with faster inserters, but I don't think that's the best solution, and I haven't researched that yet...

    I made a solar array

My first one yet. Comments are welcome !

The ratio is nearly perfect at 1.195 instead of 1.190. It is tileable, with integrated roboports and radar for easy map expansion.

I'm curious to see how the new Ryzen 5000 CPUs measure up in Factorio at megabase scales, but the game isn't covered by usual benchmarkers.

    Getting low on coal

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:40 AM PST

New player here, may have got slightly addicted in the last few days...

Took my shiny new tank for a bit of exploring well beyond my radar range and still can't find another coal bed, so am looking at what I need to minimise coal use for now, but I don't know the tech tree to know what my best options are.

I've started converting to electric furnaces, and have started building solar panels and accumulators to help power them and take the load off my coal powered steam engines. I only have 4 oil pumpjacks so I'm reluctant to use solid fuel, but do have a huge patch of uranium so I'm researching my way towards nuclear power.

Is there anything else I should be researching to minimise my coal use?

[Space Exploration] Balancing deep core miner output

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 05:05 AM PST

I really like the idea of deep core mining, it annoys me having to routinely move outposts in vanilla. As such I have attempted to go all in on this as my primary method of resource gathering. I am still fairly early on in my play through with only Nauvis and a space platforming making basic Space Science. I have automated the flow of materials into space and was hoping to go off to another planet to start deep core mining for the exotic ores I need to make more advanced kinds of space science. I am however struggling to maintain a steady throughput of Vulcanite, as my deep core miners keep backing up with other resources. This was coal, but I created a coal liquification overflow to stop it and I am now producing more Iron than I can consume.

I can think of a few options to fix this in the long term:

    • Fire the excess recourses at a planet I don't plan to use - very wasteful but as my problem is too many resources why not.
    • Create mining planets for each resource type and create a "resource pull" circuit network system to ensure Nauvis only gets what it needs - a lot of effort to setup but the "cleanest" solution I can think of.
    • Switch to vanilla mining as my primary method of resource gathering - Ill have to do a lot of bouncing around to move outposts.

I'm sure I cant be the only one who has had these problems, what solutions are other people using?
