Dear wonderful devs who made this awesome game... can we PLEASE have atomic artillery shells?

There comes a point when you have more U-235 than you have sense... like in my current game which has a 140 million uranium patch being worked by almost 300 miners feeding about 100 ore processing centrifuges feeding 10 Kovarex centrifuges.

What do you do with all the uranium? Kill bugs of course! But walking up to a bug city and firing-off shoulder-launched nukes like Casper Van Dien is so pedestrian.

Wouldn't it be great if we could add a little Robert Oppenheimer to our artillery shells?

I got frustrated with Oxygen Not Included so I bought Factorio...

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 04:26 AM PDT

    ...and it's way better!

Hi All, so yeah I got the game last week and I'm having a great time building my factory on an alien planet. It's so much better than Oxygen Not Included. I don't have to worry about my dups dying or gas leaks or slimelung or setting priorities. Just build and tech up my base and discover the land and defend my base from the natives. Thank you to the developers in making this game. Keep up the great work.

I just hit making my first train and have an automatic line picking up crude oil. I'm about to use that oil and process it to make into those red microchips so I can make my modular suit. I can't believe the complexity of everything but it's not too overwhelming. I made my starting area huge so I haven't encountered the natives yet but I'm ready for them.

Anyway, just wanted to stop by here and say that it's a great game and can't wait to launch my first rocket.

After 900hrs i finally took the plunge into Speedrunning!

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 02:06 AM PDT

So i've played a lot of Factorio, over 900hrs now, which isn't as much as some people but still 37.5 days in total.

I decided this week after watching a lot more of Team SteelAxe doing their Multiplayer Any% runs that i would like to have a go.

I've started small as committing 6hrs to a single run is tricky right now (recently had a baby during this pandemic), even though with practice getting to under 4hrs is possible and as such have started to run the 'There is no SteelAxe' speedrun category.

For those who don't know, this run starts when the map loads and ends once Steel Axe technology is researched - most people should complete it in under 30mins with little to no experience and the current WR is 9m19s.

I did a couple of offline runs and got a competitive time which i posted, but last night i did my first stream, smashed it and got a place in the top ten after a few runs back to back!

Being the only UK runner in the list is nice as well as technically i am the fastest UK runner in this category! :)

    https://www.speedrun.com/factorio#There_is_no_Steelaxe

Having some people (including an experienced speed runner) drop by and help/watch was amazingly good fun and honestly one of the most fun things i've done whilst playing/streaming.

Now i've got to perfect the run and get into the top 5 at least!

There's also a category for producing a train and 'Getting on Track' which is also around 30mins and that will be my next target :)

If you've never done a speed run but fancy giving it a go, now is the best time - i suspect when 1.0 is released there will be a flurry of new runs posted and being able to hit the ground running will be a great advantage - Plus it's so much fun and a whole new way to play Factorio!

TIL what a 20kW light bulb is capable of IRL (the Factorio lamps use 5kW)

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 03:01 PM PDT

Wasn't sure how to flair this

The lamps in Factorio use 5kW and light up a decent-sized area, but I'm not entirely sure if the scale is proportional to 1/4 of the 20kW bulb. Seems quite plausible?

A slider to set the options for all ores at once/ automatically add ores to presets

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 12:56 AM PDT

I quite often play around with the options at game start and have some mods that add additional resources.

It would be nice to have a slider on top that sets all the ores at once and that all the ores get added to the presets so that if you for instance play Pyanodons and you want to play rail world you don't have to move 50 sliders.

Also mouse over tool tip for resource amounts in the preview would be nice. Maybe options for how the patches get bigger and richer with increased distance would be nice.

If you like Factorio, you should try programming.

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 02:47 PM PDT

Bored of your current job? Not passionate about it? Want something new? Want endless work opportunities anywhere around the world? Want to get paid a lot? Try programming.

At its core, playing Factorio is like learning to program in a super accessible way.

    • no struggle getting familiar with boring details such as syntax
    • obvious attainable goal already set out for you
    • as you play more, you automatically pick up on the more advanced and higher up concepts of programming
    • no toxic environment such as company given greed and pressure for you to finish launching that rocket asap
    • not forced to work and cooperate with coworkers of different mindset, skill and preferences
    • total freedom to do it your way, full creativity unleashed

Programming doesn't have to be as toxic as above. Some of them are easy to avoid. Some take more work to get out of. But if you find yourself really loving playing Factorio with the hours flying by then chances are you'd like a career as a programmer.

Idea for vanilla: More types of bitters.... Flying, Water, Underground.

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 07:05 AM PDT

I know that is probably a mod for it... but this could be a game-changer, and I don't think it is complicated to code inside the vanilla factorio.

Even playing deathworld, factorio difficulty feels like brute-force... You develop more weapons, and the bitter just get stronger... nothing else...

Imagine if you have to scout to search for bases producing air units... also plan defenses again fly and also from water units...

As a plus, an underground unit would be a gamer changer... it would require radar to detect it for example, and it could spawn in the middle of the base... so we would need to put defenses more often...

Just a idea... We can create mods, but would be nice to have some of our mods merged on the vanilla.

Started my first game, bugs attacked in 30 minutes

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 09:08 PM PDT

pic of the setup/drills(yes this setup is trash now that I look at it)

Started my first "real" game once I reached the end of the tutorial scenario I'd been playing the last few days. 30 minutes in, had just began research(science machine is off screen down by the water and the steam engine as a temp setup) and bam- bug attack way earlier then I expected and long before I had any defenses researched.

Did I simply have to many mining machines for early game, putting out to much pollution and the game punished me for it? I tried to fight them but kiting I still got killed. I just scrapped this world.
