    This community is great!

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:02 AM PDT

I am a new player and have posted a few questions here that, to many seasoned players, have very simple solutions. Any player of this game with experience would know the answers to the questions I asked, so I expected my post to be treated with disdain and disrespect, but the exact opposite occured.

For one, I received many answers and tips to the question (which is rare when posting queries to games' subreddits). Moreover, I was surprised to see my post upvoted instead of recieving the typically 30% ratio you get when asking simple questions on other subs (the same positive feedback happened with a comment I added to the post explaining why I was confused and what it was confusing me). Not that the points themselves matter, but to me, it shows that other people are welcoming your question and showing respect. Things like that make a new player like me feel welcomed!

This is not the only experience I'm basing this off of, but one that showed uniqueness to this community.

I have always been one to disregard appreciation posts about the community of a game because I find it silly to thank people for being who they are, but isn't it great that a game like this has attracted so many helpful and respectful fans? I know of no other game with a community like this. I see many other games' fans say how good their community is, but I always manage to end up meeting the worst of it. Not here!

I hope this community stays great as it inevitably, like our factories, must grow!

    Evening Engineers,

I'm learning to program and use combinators so I made this.

It's an artillery battery that waits for a full 30 round magazine to be delivered before engaging the enemy. When ready to fire, it initiates yellow flashing lights. Upon round completion, it patiently waits for 30 new rounds before starting again.

It's not perfect and apologies if someone has done this before, but here you go nonetheless.

Turning coal and water into light oil

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 09:34 PM PDT

Turning coal and water into light oil

I really like the idea of using coal liquefaction to supply remote flamethrower turrets with a reliable source of the most potent fuel since coal and water are usually so plentiful, but managing the petroleum output is a bit troublesome being so far away from main production lines. I've resolved that by simply burning it as steam to keep the process running.

    https://preview.redd.it/7d08p3v2c9l51.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=fe78c7c0f9ac35d7223a2ce73c4837f2a3245a21

After much iterating and stress-testing and stress-eating, here it is, coal liquefaction producing a steady stream of light oil, ~13.65/s once it spools up and is eating it's own rocket fuel. As with most coal liquefaction designs, it does require a single barrel of heavy oil to kick start the process. barrelers are included for ease of use and/or entertainment.

To ensure smooth operation, it must be isolated from any other electric grid, and additionally this grid shouldn't be allowed to consume more than 1.5MW total, due to the coal liquefaction consuming ~10 steam/s. On the flip side, it must consume at least 700 kw to avoid petroleum back up; this isn't an issue with the supplied print thanks to the hot potato 2 prod1s in the HO>LO plant, but if setting it up without modules, maybe consider dropping in a radar to eat up the extra capacity.

    https://preview.redd.it/j4t4tiy4c9l51.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=e69627e4e0d9fbcf62aade038c0c703214b9eaf1

The green wire simply turns off the coal>boiler inserter to allow the boiler's buffer to empty and the rocket fuel to be burned before more coal is added. this was the easiest reliable way I could find of prioritizing the rocket fuel input. One could use one more wire to allow stockpiling of rocket fuel here, for emergencies or whatever else, though keep in mind that doing so will nearly double the coal requirement until rocket fuel is able to be burned.

Okay, this one works alright, but what if one wanted to push that boiler to its breaking point?

    https://preview.redd.it/a79xxpq8c9l51.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=b1211babd51c310e561102b5ce02aa1764d37b27

dropping in a handful more modules and one awkwardly placed accumulator gives a satisfying bump up to 22.45/s light oil. Regrettably it does need just a hair over 1.8 MW production to be able to run at full capacity due to the spike every other cycle when a solid fuel is made. I want to note even with excess capacity, it did have intermittent issues of the refinery stalling for steam, but even now I can't quite pin down whether it's simply eating too much power or just fluid shenanigans.

This is probably overkill for most purposes, but there's always somebody that wants even more. (It's me.)

    https://preview.redd.it/q9wtbz3bc9l51.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=fff2f56b455bb387b36d4f46caa8066f43b71e22

at just 36.5/s output, this is grossly excessive for what it does. why on Nauvis would anyone put t3 modules on this of all things? I don't know, I was just fiddling with the previous design for a good while and this abomination was the result. It uses turbines because if you've got the t3 modules to spare, material cost is a thing of the past anyway.

Here is the book of the 3 prints above, I hope they're of use to some of you in your bug frying adventures.

Factorio Cheat Sheet Facts Post v1

Factorio Cheat Sheet Facts Post v1

Hello again wonderful Factorio community, its Friday and in the spirit of the old FFF and the new ALT-F4 Blog I thought I'd talk about the status and future of the Factorio Cheat Sheet since the release of Factorio v1.0

    Factorio Cheat Sheet

    New Players

Welcome to Factorio! We are all so glad to have you join us in your quest to grow The Factory!

I've been stream hopping on Twitch since the last release, a giving away free tips and tricks to all the new players out there. I've only encountered 1 that decided he didn't like the game, everyone else seemed to really enjoy it! I've seem some delicious spaghetti and i was surprised to find some players starting off building really neat, finding out they are coming from Satisfactory and applying their factory building knowledge from FICSIT Inc.!!!

As a fun fact the cheat sheet website had its traffic almost triple since the launch of the game, you guys rock! I encourage you to share it with all the new players to help them out!

    Factorio Cheat Sheet Users

Neat to see the correlation between the game stats as well

    Factorio Users

    Changes since the last post

I put out a poll last time asking if the sections should be re-ordered, and It seems most (58.3%) of you liked the order of the sections as is, 29.2% thought reordering with most used would be nice and 8.3%came up with a new idea of a compromise of keeping most as is but moving some up top. And so I decided to move up the Common ratios section up top which was the highest used one of all.

Besides that there were some great anonymous feedback as well that i took into account! Here is a summary

    • Move Common Ratios section to the top
    • Completely reworked the Tips section (Should be great for New Players!)
    • Expanded Belt section to include Bus concept and added belt images from the tips there.
    • More links to creators and communities where added in the Links section
    • Simplify Nuclear formulas in a table
    • Added Refineries per Pipeline
    • Added blueprint for train colors
    • Removed the least used combat section and added link in tips
    • Other small tweaks (links and wording changes, updated banner with Spidertron :p)
    • Grammar tweaks

As alway let me know your feedback

    Common Ratio Presentation change?

Some people have voiced that the common ratios display is not very intuitive to read and so i was thinking of changing it to be more like throw i did it in the Satisfactory Cheat Sheet. Thoughts? The main concern in the increased size. Should we change common ratio presentation or keep it as is?

    Translation support interest?

Iv'e been thinking of supporting various languages from the very beginning, but its a huge task, and I am not a translator so i would definitely need the community's help if I were to get this going. That said, I've coded translations before which did not involve paragraphs of text, but rather short strings that where easily replaced by translation string variables in the html.

I gotta figure out the technical part of the translation if where to do it, and how to get the community to easily be able to do so as well. I know Factorio devs used Crowdin but if anyone knows of a free alternative we could use that maybe, Tbh im not even sure how Crowdin works.

Any advice or ideas on how to approach these would be so much appreciated. On the other hand I'm not sure if its necessary since google translate seems to be able to translate text on websites already. Let me know your thoughts!

    Closing Thoughts

As always a huge thanks to the community for your support! Even a bigger thanks to the Patreons who chose to support me! Thanks to those who voted in the poll i put out last time (which i never closed btw, so you can still voice some thoughts if you like!) Fun fact here is a break down of how many hrs people have played the game:

    Factorio Players Hours in Game

The factory must grow and i hope to see some hours over 9000 :
Thanks for reading, till next time!
