It's possible this is common knowledge, but I didn't realize until my second play-through that you can chain labs together to pass science packs between them.

My 64 blue belt green circuit factory (belt based)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 02:23 AM PST

My 64 blue belt green circuit factory (belt based)

So I'm trying to gear up for 5k spm (currently my base is a bit above 1k). I figured the first step is to have enough circuits. I underestimated how much belts were needed for such a monstrosity... granted, my design might be optimal (and I haven't actually tested it with full load yet as I don't have enough iron/copper production). Turns out I more or less had to pave the area with belts...

I build around 32 cargo wagon trains, so the stations are a bit huge. Each loading/unloading two belts per wagon, making 64 blue belts per train. To simplify I use one belt of iron/copper per belt of circuits. This means the iron/copper belts are backed up, but starting to balance this properly to get even more green circuits would be a total nightmare.

A total of 123k blue belts plus 4.8k undergrounds were used for this beast.

If for some reason anyone wants the blueprint for this - here it is: https://gist.githubusercontent.com/hallgeirl/a17ba254f7cde13a916ec2ee28413718/raw/3691d1eaf03bd3bfae24ee7348d7d176e1175219/gistfile1.txt

Any improvement suggestions are of course welcome - though the purpose of the post was just to share this madness to the world... ;-)

Two of the production blocks. Each produces 8 blue belts

A little bit of belt acrobatics...

Can someone explain to me why the Green circuit sometimes doesn't have enough iron? I already added an extra inserter, but they just stop working untill it's too late

Factorio is a game where you can be 50 hours into a play through and feel like you’re only just starting. That’s amazing.

    I bloody love this game.

Casual Default Settings Speedrun in 7:50:59 - report

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 07:55 AM PST

I was exploring Rain's Twitch stream, and also intrigued by public biter battles, and I wanted to try playing a little faster! Before, I was a plodding player, nothing built in correct ratio, and I built very slowly. I loved a base that could run slowly overnight with artillery defense. Speed running added new dimensions. Especially: placement speed, and resource flow efficiency. I'd never worried about a smelter only 3/4 used before or having too much ore backing up.

My goal was to beat Default Settings with the No Spoon achievement. No blueprint import or planned base layout, new random seed every run. This was my sixth attempt! A few times I wished I had chosen a less frustrating mode.

This start had what I needed, especially extra coal and iron right at home. I never used the large iron path to southwest because I couldn't build the consuming machines in time to build more mining.

I realized needed to learn (from watching a few expert speed runs) a pretty good idea of how to get to blue and bots. After that, purple onward was an improvised mess of spaghetti.

Biters are a huge pain in this mode! I cannot stress this enough. They mostly left me alone early here. I chose power location to be tucked in and not hit any nests. Eventually they started to run in but I had laser turrets in time this time so didn't need to waste my whole iron supply on ammo. I did not research land mines (or cliff explosives) relying on laser, and there was constantly something else to do.

I barely got enough outposting done to replace my starter ore patches.

I got bots in 3:10, the silo researched at 7:16, and then the win at 7:50:49! I think, not bad for a casual player. :) My biggest area for improvement is mechanics, especially how to lay down specific builds very fast (e.g. smelter, mall). After that I could use better base layout. But I think I'm done with the frustration of constant biters for a while!

Dammit i just need to get these science packs in!

I achieved 420 SPM in my biggest factory yet. I wanted to make some huge production lines, so I took the base ratio of science assemblers, multiplied it by 10, and filled them with production modules.
