    Should I buy Factorio? - A Guide

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 11:28 PM PST

I'm submitting this here in the hope that it helps people who might find it by searching or having it linked somewhere permanent.

Feedback & CC are highly welcome. Please suggest away! Eventually, I think I'd like to submit this to the official wiki.

    Should I buy Factorio?

    What is Factorio?

Factorio is an 'Automation Simulator'. It's a science-fiction game that has elements of real-time strategy, tower defense, exploration, city building, and crafting genres. It is played primarily in a top-down, 2D world that is infinitely expanding as you explore. All game elements are fully 3D rendered and animated for an incredibly immersive experience.

You take the role of an engineer who is stranded alone on an alien world with very few tools. You progress through the game by converting natural resources into tools, weapons, utility buildings and even robots and then discovering new technologies in a massive 'Research' tree. Each new technology you research unlocks more items to craft, every one of which can be done automatically. There is a heavy emphasis on logistics management -- moving resources, components, and finished products between factories, storage, and research facilities. This occurs via vehicles, conveyor belts, robots, pipelines, and even cargo trains. Your goal is to create technology that will facilitate your rescue-- launching a satellite into orbit.

You can and should build factories that build factories. Everything in the game can be fully automated:

    • Mine, harvest, and refine natural resources like ore, wood, water, and petroleum
    • Manage vast logistics networks
    • Build networks of train transport
    • Design and create power plants
    • Manage pollution
    • Create weapons to defend yourself from the hostile alien natives, from automatic firearms, to tanks, all the way up to attack drones and nuclear weapons if you so choose.

On what platforms can I play Factorio?

Factorio is available for Windows, MacOS, and Linux running on x86-64 processors with reasonably modern graphics hardware. It's not available for mobile devices like phones or tablets, or for game consoles. If your computer or laptop was made in the last 8-10 years, you can likely play with no problems.

Please check this link for the official system requirements: https://www.factorio.com/buy

If in doubt, download and try the demo to see how the game will perform on your system: https://www.factorio.com/download-demo

    Where can I purchase Factorio?

Steam, gog.com, Humble Bundle, or the official Factorio website: https://www.factorio.com/buy

    Is there a free demo?

Yes. There is a free-to-download demo that contains a tutorial and beginner campaign: https://www.factorio.com/download-demo

Factorio is an 'Early Access' game. Is that likely to cause problems?

No. Factorio is feature complete, stable, and has remarkably few bugs. Many players feel that it is more of a finished product than most other games currently on the market from big-name publishers. Factorio is one of the highest rated games in terms of player satisfaction. It's currently the 2nd most positively-rated game on Steam, surpassed only by 'Portal 2'.

The developers of the game, Wube Software (https://www.factorio.com/team) continually add new features, refinements to existing features, exterminate newly discovered bugs with startling speed, and are working towards a '1.0' release in the very near future.

Is there an active Wiki or game guide to help me get started?

Yes. In addition to many wonderful youtube tutorials, there is a beautifully organized official Wiki site that offers beginner tutorials and detailed discussions of game mechanics: https://wiki.factorio.com/ However, the game is wonderfully forgiving to players who simply want to dive in and learn as they go.

If I like 'Game X', will I like Factorio?

Factorio appeals heavily to players who like 'base building', planning, and problem-solving. That's hard to quantify. Happily, there's an excellent, time-unlimited demo you can freely download that offers a tutorial and 'beginner' campaign so that you can experience what the game has to offer: https://www.factorio.com/download-demo

Factorio seems rather expensive. Can I expect a sale or the game to decrease in cost in the near future?

You can almost certainly not expect a sale. Refraining from sales and 'in your face' advertising are part of the development team's philosophy. They believe that the game should be strong enough to stand on its own for a moderate price-point: USD $30.00. Quite frankly, for the already massive amount of content in the game, it does. There is no subscription fee or currently any DLC to purchase.

How many hours of game-play can I expect from the game?

Factorio is VERY open-ended. For the Free-play scenario, there are in-game achievement badges for completing the main goals in limited time, with the highest-level award for being eight hours or less. That's really pushing it.

It's not uncommon for players to spend forty or more hours on a single playthrough. Some players choose to continue developing their factories for weeks or even months on end. Factorio is optimized to support amazingly large factories with tens- or even hundreds-of-thousands of components working together simultaneously.

How much replay value does Factorio have?

So very much. In addition to learning new, more efficient or more fun ways of building every time you play through the game, there is a truly massive amount of community content contribution in the form of game mods. These range from simple cheats, to 'Quality of Life' mods, to 'Total Conversion' mods that change almost every element of gameplay, making it more or less difficult and more or less complex as you choose.

Is it hard to install mods?

No. Factorio comes with a highly-polished in-game mod browser and installer, as well as an official 'Mod Portal website: https://mods.factorio.com/

    Is there a 'Peaceful Mode?'

Yes. You can choose to play at a variety of difficulty settings, from completely peaceful to 'Aliens'-like levels of hostility. You can fine-tune almost every facet of your game experience with an easy-to-use GUI or play on one of the presets.

Can I play online with others?

Yes. Factorio is completely multi-player ready. You can play cooperatively or competitively with players on your local network, or via the Internet. Factorio has a large, active community of online players. There are several subreddits, including https://reddit.com/r/FactorioMMO, irc channels, and many Discord channels.

    Is Factorio good for children?

By default, the game pits the player against apparently mindless insect- and worm-like aliens that may be frightening to small children. Killing the insects is the only way to defeat them, and when they die, they erupt in purple goo. The goo disappears almost immediately and the bug carcasses gradually fade out over a few minutes. If you prefer not to expose your children to that kind of sci-fi violence, disabling enemies will ratchet the game from 'PG-13' down to 'G'.

If the player is defeated by enemies or by being hit by a train, they simply get a 'Game Over' screen with an option to respawn or load from the last save. (By default, the game auto-saves every 5 minutes, in addition to manual saves.)

Otherwise, the game is excellent in terms of teaching planning, organization, and even basic science and engineering. For younger children, there is a mod that simplifies the game considerably:

    https://mods.factorio.com/mod/SimpleRecipes

    Is Factorio addictive?

Factorio does not abuse 'Skinner Box' psychology in the way a lot of MMOs, mobile games, or 'Loot Box' games do. After initially purchasing the game, you are never in a situation where you are offered the ability to pay real money for advancement.

However, there is a certain engaging quality to the process of expanding your factory, researching new technologies, building new tech, and then repeating the process. It is certainly the kind of game that will make you want to stay up late to finish that 'one last research'. It will absolutely cause the 'Tetris Effect' after you've played it for a few hours-- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_effect. You will see conveyor belts and robotic inserter arms when you close your eyes.

The unofficial motto of the Factorio community is 'The Factory Must Grow.'

Upgraded Radar + "Plan Mode" construction

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:51 AM PST

I have no idea how hard it would be to do either of those things, so I'm just spitballing here. Why I think those ideas are good in comments.

Radars are great, but I feel the scanning option is not very useful. You get random insight, which is... random. I think it would be great if we could set the radars to a particular area: make them scan, in "circles", around where you want to look - with restrictions, maybe only scanning up to a certain distance, scaling with how many radars you have. Or we could be able to set them so they would be "looking" for a precise ressource. They'd have a certain percentage of chance to find it per scan, and the scan would be slower than a normal one; both scanning speed and discovering percentage increasing with number of radars.

It would also be great if you could plug them in the logic network. They'd send signals describing where they're looking, for instance, sending how much ressources are in the area they scanned. They'd work with a grid, so they could give out coordinates (they could by sending 2 signals, or one signal for the column with its value being the line); which would also turn them into an ennemy radar, since it would easily permit to create warnings, if they sent a specific signal for ennemies. I think that would really be awesome.

On a different topic, a huge quality of life improvement would be a "plan mode" construction. Simply, if you press whatever modifier, say shift+clic, you cannot place down anything if it's not on a well-oriented (thinking of inserters) ghost. That would wildy simplify building before you get to the technology everyone already thinks about right now where it's not an issue anymore.

    Starting with advanced logic

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 05:13 AM PST

Hi. I want to get started with the factorio logic components. I can manage the basic 01 logic like Oil > 200 but have no idea of combining inserter and furnace output for example. I read the wiki entry but did not understand a lot. Can you recommend good videos? That's the best way for me to learn

Why does this print use both yellow and yes belts?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:07 AM PST

I'm looking through red and green science builds to improve my space utilization and I found this one. I noticed that it uses both red and yellow belts. If you have access to red belts, why would you include yellow? Am I missing something as far as efficiency is concerned?

    Showcase of factorio bases

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:48 AM PST

There are a lot of posts about bases after x hours of gameplay. The effort put in to them is amazing.

I find it really interesting to see the problem solving of others. However, it is difficult to get a grasp of the map itself by just screenshots.

So my question is: What type of presentation do you like best?

Link to factorio maps? Upload of savegame? A ton of screenshots?

Or What is the worst type of presentation? With obviously photo's from screens, including flashlight glare.

    Looking forward for your opions.

Wood to Oil Mod: Feeding Wood

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:02 AM PST

Playing around with first mods. Very simple ones. Got the wood-to-oil mod and see it needs R&D. Fine. But how do you auto-load trees into the chemical plant? I want to use this one on a new start, but I don't see a way other than hand-feeding axed lumber in.

Forget work, I want to throw myself into this game

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 12:37 PM PST

I've been a very casual off-and-on player of Factorio for a couple years, but I've never automated things past blue science, and even then it wasn't 100% automated. I do tech work which includes a ton of automation work so when I'm playing a new scenario and get to the point of having to automate blue science it starts to feel like I'm building a particularly challenging data pipeline or debugging a misbehaving scheduling DAG.

Is it wrong that I want to take a week or two off work so I can focus on nothing but Factorio? I want to go super deep into the game but the whole work thing just gets in the way. 😀

What kind of coop games should I look for as an absolute beginner?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 11:48 PM PST

I played a couple of multiplayer games with a group called "comfy" and I learned a lot. Mostly pvp where players split into north/south and try to progress while avoiding having their silos attacked. Very fun.

What kind of games/maps should I look for if I want to learn to build big projects?

    Any mods to track goals?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 05:12 AM PST

    Hi!

Are there any mods that can help track product creation in inventory, such as small goals?

I started with angel and bob's for the first time after a hundred hours with other mods and even using "What's is used for", "FNEI" and "TODO" I feel lost sometimes.

I think this is part of the fun of these mods but is there a way to track small goals automatically?

I accept in game workarounds to better understand how these mods work.

    Thanks
