I think playing Factorio just got me an Internship at the Toronto Transit Commission

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 06:35 AM PDT

I recently finished Factorio for the first time in late Feb, and wow what a great experience, it was basically all I could think of for a month straight. A big part of that was my train system, which I found very satisfying to put together to have it run automatically.

I applied to the internship through my university's co-op program, the position was for a Signals Engineer Assistant. Basically, I'd be maintaining the software that's used by the trains to understand where they are in relation to other trains. This allows the system to run at peak efficiency while ensuring that trains never crash into each other (sounds familiar eh?). When I was doing some prep for the interview I began to research the different methods of train control, and I found this wiki article that describes the various methods that have been used over the years. I learned that what the trains in Factorio use is essentially a "fixed block design" in which the rail signals are fixed in place and divide the rail into multiple blocks, of which only one train can be in at a time.

So in the interview itself, I was able to mention that I actually had some experience with fixed block design from Factorio, and they seemed really surprised about that! They said most people had the requisite coding knowledge, but experience with the design of the signal systems themselves was rare. They said that irl they mostly use what's called a "moving block design" in which the defined "blocks" of the system are fluid and are constantly moving in reaction to the trains around them. Given the fact that I found Factorio's system to be complex at first, I can't even imagine what the game would be like with the added complexity of moving blocks.

The interview went well after that and a couple weeks later I got the offer, so thanks Factorio I think you actually got me my first real engineering position!

I think Factorio ruined other games for me. Has this happened to anyone else?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 12:16 PM PDT

I love the game, but this is not just fan-boy gushing. I'm trying to figure out if Factorio did something to my mind, and it's a serious question. I'm not interested in game recommendations or clever quips about how addicting Factorio is.

I got to a point where it was time to take a break from Factorio, so I began playing other stuff. I tried new (to me) games and returned to old favorites. But in every case, the new game could not hold my interest more than a day or two. Usually I'd just give up within an hour or two.

Everything else just feels like playing solitaire. It's either boring, too constrained, or unpolished. To put in another way: I can no longer achieve a state of "flow" with other computer games.

I've always been a one-game-at-a-time player. Two games cannot hold my interest, so I focus on one for a while, then move on to something else. I can't find anything to move on to now.

It's not a big deal, I guess. But it used to be I could get lost in quite a few games. That seems to be gone. it could be something else going on in my life, but I don't know what, and when I returned to Factorio, I was able to get lost in the game for hours.

    Anything similar happen to you?

    My first experience with biters...

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 11:20 PM PDT

So this is my first play through of the game and all was going well. Easy days, killing all the biters off with turrets, getting to blue science. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. So I saw the red x meaning something was broke, that had never happened then multiple red x's. I had no idea these things would come in like swarms of 50 and get stronger. I thought I got pretty quick at automating things, when I say I had 20+ research stations to get laser turrets, then saying "F*** my whole factory" and getting full automated production of just laser turrets, no layout planning. Just action. I am to the point now where I feel semi safe but I have never been so stressed from a game. Thanks for coming to my story time if you read this far :$

Hello, this is my first time playing with mods and this is my base after 24 hours.

I play with Bob inserters / Even distribution / Factorissimo 2 / FNEI / Krastorio 2 / MaxRateCalculator / Mining Drones / Resource Spawner Overhaul / Transport Drones / Waterfill

Can you tell me if i'm doing good, I nearly have blue science :)

My first 130 hours in Factorio - My thoughts on this fantastic game

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 04:01 PM PDT

My first 130 hours in Factorio - My thoughts on this fantastic game

After playing this game, i couldn't help but make my first huge wall-of-text post in Reddit, commenting on the amazing experience that i've had with Factorio.

So, a month ago my youtube started recommending me some Factorio videos, and the first thing i saw when i opened the video was a mile long train with several artillery wagons demolishing hundreds of bitter spawners.
I continued receiving several of those videos, showing off some absolutely amazing factories that were as large as cities and could process dozens of millions of products each hour, as well as memes and reviews saying how addicting and soul-consuming this game is.
After watching through all that, i decided: "Ok, i'm gonna buy this, and i'm going to play Death World right away! No tutorials and i will stream it!"

And i did it (No regrets).

I don't remember exactly how my first game went, but i died because i did not know how to shot biters, and i died a couple of times before i could even make to oil. As a rule, i said that during the stream if i died i would have to restart, and i kept doing so. I believe i died like 3 times in my first game run.

A few days later, college began to hit me hard with several assignments and tests so i ran out of patience to stream every single game, so i started a Death World singleplayer game, with around 35-40 hours played on Steam.

By that time, i had already learned a few tricks, such as how to use burner mines on coal, how to actually fight in the game, and all. Man, little did i know how big those bitter waves could get. In early game, bitters were causing me a lot of problems, specially because i was quite slow in research and was not holding back on pollution. God i remember rushing back to defend my base like half a dozen times to kill the biters with grenades, until i walled everything off and placed belt feed machineguns all the way on my border. With that, i was able to solve the problem of early assaults to my base and eventually acquired oil for the first time.

I would consider the point where i found oil to be the start of my midgame. Things got muuuuch easier. Now i had flamethrowers, i could turret-creep my way into the needed resources, and now i didn't rely as much on coal as before, but the logistics of my base and assembly lines were starting to grow larger and larger, and my starter resources were dwilling. I had to spend some time expanding my base to reach larger iron deposits, and i was able to do so after making a tank ( Oh God, the tank is fun). It was also the first time i made a fully functional train. Trains are fun!

It was all going fine, until... my oil started to decline. I was spending way more than i could produce, since i completely stopped relying on coal, and started using almost exclusively to make plastics and grenades. How i answered this new issue? Expand the factory and research nuclear power.
I grabbed my tank and went into distant nests to build two outposts, one to mine uranium and other to mine coal. With that all set up, i stabilished some new train lines and rushed to build a nuclear powerplant. My energy grid was almost dead without enough oil to supply it. Then, the centrifuges started working and the powerplant went online as the first bits of uranium fuel began to be processed. Just that powerplant alone was able to produce over 10 times more electricity than what my base needed. With that, i was able to reduce my oil demand significantly and begin the mass implementation of Laser Turrets to use that new electricity supply to kill the evolved bitters, who were starting to destroy a few of my turrets in my outer walls. That was the beginning of my late game.

With this new energy supply, suddenly i could breathe, and i noticed a new problem: Since most of my starting resources were spent, i built some outposts far away, and needed to use trains to transport their extracted resources to my main base, and those train lines were going through wild territory. Some of my trains were starting to come back to the base with some damage, and i thought that was a no-no. My answer to the problem? Expand the factory.
With tanks, artillery-creep and bots, i began to expand my borders like never before.

First, i expanded my borders north, as those were the regions with the most significant presence of nests. This little wall between both lakes was my previous border.

Then, i pushed south and expanded way beyond my train lines, securing more land and resources for my base, which was starting to eat resources like crazy by that point.

By the end of the expansion, i had set up at my southern border a wall completely covered by laser turrets, flamethrowers, and a massive line of dragon teeths. Soon, the north would have the same kind of defenses.

After that, most of my effort went to refactoring my base. My old smelter lines would not be capable of sustaining the immense production that i was gonna need to make those blue circuits and other late game objects. Plus, my base was not well designed in terms of scalability, so i thought it was better to just start everything from zero, and so i did. For a while, i couldn't research anything, but i was able to kind of fix the organization of my factory. By the end of my refactoring and addition of new production lines, my base was looking like this:

All those large yellow belts are bringing the copper, iron and other essential resources to the production lines above. Not the most beautiful thing in the world but i was happy with the results.

By that point, it was just all about setting up to launch the rocket. I began to research at much faster speed than before, and as my factory grew, further i expanded my borders to reach new resources to be extracted. I even made an artillery train to help me with that! And well...

Those guys were not amused with that.

During this expansion in special, i faced a gigantic horde of biters and spitters, including Behemoths, and my defenses held strong. I thought with the Behemoths i would have a hard time, but that was not the case, so i stopped fearing them, specially after i acquired a MK2 Armor.

After a while, i was able to set up everything needed to launch the rocket with a satellite. After almost 80 hours, my first game run with Factorio was finally over!

    GG!!!

So, that was the story of my first successful game in Factorio. I still cannot believe how much fun i had while playing this, and i feel like what i have seen is only a small fraction of what this game is capable of. And i still have much to improve. 80 hours seem to be a really long time to launch a rocket to the space, so i should maybe try improving that on my next game, though i do believe that Factorio should be played at your own pace and with the settings that give you the most fun experience.

I really enjoyed the pacing, relaxation and satisfaction of being able to deal with each challenge of the game. One of the strongest points of Factorio is exactly that: You are constantly facing new challenges and have a new objective every day to optimize, expand and scale your industry, and with each challenge solved, there is a sensation of reward and satisfaction.

The combat was also surprisingly fun, specially after late game when you can use cars, tanks, or yourself with MK2 armor just running around like a crazy bastard shooting lasers on every direction!

I will definitely be keeping this save to play around and continue E X P A N D I N G the factory. The people who made this game are geniuses and they did an amazing job making Factorio. This is for sure, one of the best games i've ever played!

I would love to hear suggestions on what to do next. Maybe a rail world game? Mods? Who knows?

What is the maximum throughput you can get into a single side of a 4 wagon train using belts?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 02:22 PM PDT

I'm trying some designs for a train loading system. Unless I'm mistaken, the theoretical maximum is slightly more than 8 blue belts, or 21600 items/m.

    Free server hosting

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 05:34 PM PDT

Hi all! I have been working on creating a site to host Factorio called hostfactor.io for free (leveraging Kubernetes, you can see my technical ramblings on this on my Medium if you're interested in K8s stuff)

Some features I built into it:

    • Save uploads/downloads through the web UI.
    • Beefy server (2GB RAM)
    • Mod uploads through the web UI.
    • Configuration for your game can be completely done through the web UI.
    • See the logs of your server through the web UI.
    • Switch regions ezpz.

Some things I want to support if people are interested:

    • EU/Asia regions
    • Completely static IPs
    • Dynamic configuration
    • Discord bots

The project has been really fun and I'm going to continue working on it to add new features. Lmk what you think!

How to convert constant signal to a pulse?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 01:23 PM PDT

I am building a mega base and I need to control some trains using the circuit network. I need a pulse signal evrytime a certain signal turns red. Signals unfortunately constantly output their state to the network. This is not what I need. I need a 1 tick pulse evrytime a train passes through. How do I do this. There is no settings on the signal to output as pulse like we can do with belts.

119 MW Coal and 356 MW Solid Fuel Power shown.

This is a simple and easily upgradeable coal / solid fuel power setup. It progressively uses a single yellow belt of coal, a red belt of coal split, a single yellow belt of solid fuel and 2 yellow belts of solid fuel (or a red belt split). No pumps are used.

    Some stats:

    33 boilers - 66 steam engines - 2 offshore pumps- 59 MW

    66 boilers - 132 steam engines - 4 offshore pumps- 119 MW

    99 boilers - 198 steam engines - 6 offshore pumps- 178 MW

    198 boilers - 396 steam engines - 12 offshore pumps- 356 MW

Nightmare World (Seed preview / scenario settings)

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 01:40 AM PDT

Nightmare World (Seed preview / scenario settings)

New player here. So after three abandoned playthroughs in early mid-game, and one on the brink of megabase and Spidertron + rockets left to research, I got bored with the save because the bugs were too easy with normal settings. I like playing games like these for PvE too - not just the building.

Now looking to start something like this:

Mountainous forest planet... with quite the conqueror species of bugs. I'm scared, but I want to play something like this. Wondering what kind of a setup would be balanced for some challenge but not totally absolutely overwhelming. I'll probably put in maximum yield, normally distributed, normal sized resources.

Thematically it doesn't make much sense that the bugs are everywhere except around the starting area. But if all of it is filled in, it's way too overwhelming for my skill level.

    Thoughts on balance, or experiences?

Shoot a nuke down a bug hole, you got a lot of dead bugs.
