My second factory so far. Took me a good hour trying to find out why there was coal on my iron belts

I was told to get rid of wood in a more creative and complicated way than just nuking it. I didn't see this way of destroying wooden chests extremelly inefficiently in this forum. Spent some couple hours designing this biter slaving module. Hope you like it. It breaks an average of 6 crates/min

    New update from factorio Twitter

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 09:02 PM PDT

This is my first full playthrough (1.5th base). I just want to thank the Factorio community for all the help along the way, even though I've been a fly on the wall. On my next playthrough, my one big change is not using external blueprints. I didn't use that many, but I feel cheap when I use them.

A city block vanilla solution to refueling trains without drones

A city block vanilla solution to refueling trains without drones

Once you get to drones, refueling trains becomes simple: just put a requester chest with whatever fuel you want to use next to where the head of the train stops at each station and insert it directly. If you have enough drone coverage, they usually have enough throughput to supply all stations with necessary fuel.

However, I was playing industrial revolution mod and drones are moved very far into the endgame of that mod. So I really wanted to find a scalable way how to feed my trains with fuel without resorting to make them stop at a dedicated refueling station because that eventually causes congestion and does not scale well.

So I found this page: https://factorioprints.com/view/-LbLgn_4Sf9WcyTmqDx2 and that lead me to an idea of using a fuel destination station 2 tiles ahead of every normal station and activate it when this station runs out of fuel. Then just have a couple of many-to-many fuel delivery trains dedicated to supplying all of these stations with fuel when needed.

    Here's how it looks:

    Fuel station

This is the fuel destination station and the train that you see delivers fuel (in this case charged batteries but can be any other fuel including vanilla) and stores it in the lower box. Note the inserter pointing at that box can only reach cargo wagon of the fuel train. For normal cargo trains it will connect to the locomotive and won't extract anything from them:

    Normal station right behind it

In industrial revolution you can extract spent batteries from trains so I put them into the top box, load them into the fuel train and then charge them at the charging station, but this is completely optional and you can use just the lower part to feed trains with coal or nuclear fuel.

    My first 1k SPM base

    My first 1k SPM base

Hardly the most exciting post around here but I finally managed to build my first megabase with 1k SPM. Took me about 90 hours to build a decent bus base with about 200ish SPM and I hit the 1k SPM mark for the first time at about 167 hours. Took about 15ish hours after that to iron out all the kinks and bottlenecks in production but it's running flawlessly now as you can see, 10+ hours without a hitch.

I know that the factory must grow but I'm kinda daunted about doubling this one to 2k SPM since I would have to redesign some parts of my main railway because it probably can't handle roughly twice the trains (129 currently). Also I think the train size of 2-4 is going to be a bottleneck in the long run.

But anyway, I'm proud of this base. Took a lot of ideas from this subreddit but straight up copied very few things. Still a "noob" in some areas of the game with a little over 300h played even though I bought it when it was in v0.13ish.

Thanks for looking and you can ask me anything. :)

    I prefer factories

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 11:31 PM PDT

There is this demo in steam about a nature restoration game call terra nil, the funny part was at the end of the demo where they gave you a mysterious button that says ''I prefer factories" and it links to factorio lol. I think that's a dev with a sense of humor linking to a game that is the total opposite of theirs haha

    Critique my intersection please

So I've had my fun with buses, and I'm about to have a proper play with rail and blocks.

Just wondering if anyone cares to give me any pointers on whether this is a decent enough intersection? (I know there are a tonne of blueprints, I wanted to just have a stab at it).

Not looking for insane throughput, mainly something that two trains can pass on in opposite directions and not too prone to deadlocks.

Train size is the boring 1-4

Thanks in advance fellow engineers :)

I just got the game and I’m very overwhelmed, any tips?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 03:52 PM PDT

I've recently started the game (12 hrs in) and as I've haphazardly been putting my mining operations and railroads together, I'm realizing that it's not going to work exactly as I planned it to. I have so much put down though that it would be hard to fix it all. I feel like I need to wipe my base now or restart, are there any tips for getting past this? Is it common to wipe your base and rebuild? Im playing without the bugs so it's basically just an efficiency game it seems like. Any tips about early play or how to set up a base properly from the start would be so appreciated, Thanks in advance!!

I'm moving my game to another PC and it doesn't seem to load the blueprint-storage.dat from my old install. How to refresh the blueprint list?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 02:32 PM PDT

The blueprint list is blank even tho I put my blueprint-storage.dat file into my new factorio folder (in appdata).

Is there any reason to use one of these over the other? Do trains like smaller or longer sweeps? Or no real difference?

How do you put limits on a certain item in a storage chest system?

I want to mass produce a expensive item and store it in storage chest, but I want to have no more than 50. How can I do this?

Do I need to get stone to home base? Do I have to fight SO MANY BITTERS for that?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 09:09 PM PDT

This is my first game in free play. I've started with some stone at my home base. Don't remember how much it was in the beginning, but now I have left 111k.

Radars from my home base did not find any stone nearby, so I went for a trip and build a radar station powered by solar panels.... after waiting for some time I decided that faster would be just to drive around in a car and see if I can find stone this way faster.

In fact, I did and found it, see the screenshot of the map: https://imgur.com/gallery/aox8479

The problem is that Stone is god damn SO FAR from the home base. In order to build railroad there I need to destroy like 7 big and small bitters' nests.

So the question: am I doing the right things? I guess I could try to drive around closer to the base and see if there is stone anywhere closer, but I don't really see any better idea.

Please share your hints on this and related topics!

    Thanks a lot!

Noticed a slight growth on my map, went to contain... Not sure if I have a problem...

Been working towards this for so long now I don't know what achievement to try for next.

    How do you scout?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 05:25 PM PDT

In my first freeplay game I'm running out of bricks (or stones, not at computer now and dont remember what's the actual resource name).

I understand I need to build radar station, but it seems they have a limited range.

How do I scan more territory? Is there any sort of upgrades for radars or I just need to build these radars far from the base?

And if I build them outside, how do I do that? I guess bring some solar panels and turrets?

    Is there a better strategy?

    Thanks!

How do you protect your base?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 05:20 PM PDT

In my first freeplay game I'm building turrets around the base and supply them all with basic ammo type using a yellow belt.

Also, I have a wall in front of turrets.

Every now and then when I take new space I move turrets further, and belt, and electricity, and the wall. And this is a bit of time-consuming.

I dream that soon-ish I'll use laser turrets so I don't need to bother with at least the belt for ammo.

Is this a good strategy? What could be better? May e I just take a tour in a car and destroy nearby bests?

    Please share your experience.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Recommend me some mods

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 04:47 PM PDT

I've played Factorio off and on for a number of years, most recently I tried Space Exploration but didn't end up getting off Nauvis. I like building complex factory chains but some of the Angel's petro-chem product chains have definitely been more complex than I enjoy.

I've completed Bob's Mods, tried Angels's + Bob's, tried Seablock (got pretty far but then lost interest), and tried Space Exploration. I usually turn biters to peaceful (I play slowly, doing a lot of planning trying to perfect ratios), and I'm not looking for a fighting challenge or deathworld. I'm looking for something different/fun, not too grindy. Any suggestions?
