Posted: 02 May 2021 03:48 AM PDT " Every patch is sized differently and it's a lot easier to match mining and smelting capacity and set up an appropriate sized train station if you're right there. And when the patch is mined out, you just tear it down with bots." "Ore. I can't be bothered with sizing smelting arrays precisely for each ore patch (and even if I did, they would be huge and hard to construct, 8 blue belts per ore patch is no joke) and would rather have a surplus of ore from all the patches than have a bunch of beaconed electric furnaces sitting around idle when a patch dries up." Sorry for the nooby question. [link] [comments]

Challenges, mods, settings, etc. to get me away from bus design? Posted: 02 May 2021 05:48 AM PDT Hi all. I have over 1000 hours in factorio and have completed it in many ways and many different mod packs. However... I find myself getting bored of Factorio as I -always- build everything the same. Same smelter set up, same bus setup, etc. Starting a new save is just a drag. I don't like the aesthetics of my bases anymore. I miss the days of my bases being super compact and a mess because I had no idea what I was doing. I want to be able to take interesting screenshots that I can really sit and just look at. One of my goals from this is to be able to take/stitch a large screenshot of my base and print it to frame on my walls in my games room. Any tips of achieving such a goal? Self restraint isn't enough - I need some kind of direction to force it otherwise I slip in to habits. Seablock maybe? Deathworld? I'm trying to think of things that'd limit my space or to force me in to building totally differently rather than relying on the bus. [link] [comments]

Factorio Community Map - May 2021 Posted: 01 May 2021 06:06 PM PDT What is this? The idea behind the monthly community map is to share a map exchange string at the beginning of every month, and get as many people as we can to start a new world with it. Then at the end of the month (or even periodically if you'd prefer!) we share screenshots and saves of our factories so that we can see how different people approach the same spawn; how they set up their base, how they deal with aliens, and how they arrange their science, power, and everything else. I hope it can highlight how many different ways there are to do things, inspire some new designs, and maybe seeing how veteran Factorio players tackle problems will help out new players facing the exact same problems. (Of course, there's also the fact that it'll just be plain cool to see all of the different possible factories - the good, the bad, and the ugly.) Last Month's Results The Community Map 2021 has truly been the year of modded monthly maps. I don't think we've even managed to get in a single vanilla map so far this year, and it's already May! Not that I'm complaining; the modded maps we've done so far this year have been a lot of fun, each of them adding their own twist to the game without getting in its way, or becoming either too boring or too complicated. So now it's time for one of my favorite types of mods to take center stage: map generation mods! We'll be using Fractured World this month to make the map... Well, it's really something. You'll just have to check it out for yourself to find out. ; P But that's not all! We're also going to be doing the Rocket Rush scenario this month! I've said it before and I'll say it again, but I really do love scenarios, and I should feature more of them. I've never done a monthly map with the Rocket Rush scenario before, so I hope it's something you all will enjoy as much as I will! Scenario: Rocket Rush Required Mods: Optional Mods: Exchange string: Mod Settings: Alien Biomes: Schall Alien Mutation: What your starting area should look like (after you buy all of your items and stand on the launch pad): https://i.imgur.com/NmJB9xU.png Sync File: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mm4ql_6oJkUYlp4zLBsrMxrce-zyVY3w/view?usp=sharing Oh, what's that? Alien Mutation? Hard Crafting? Ah, don't worry about those. It's just there to make everything's not so easy that the experts in our midst can finish off their factory in 10 minutes and be on their way. You wouldn't want a map that was too easy after all, right? As a reminder, this is a scenario map this month. When you go to generate your world (if you don't use the save sync) you've got to select Rocket Rush, not Freeplay! One final note: Mods often have some impact on loading times. Sometimes these are small, sometimes... not so much. This combination of mods has a pretty noticeable effect on load times. Fortunately, there's (kind of) a solution to this. When you're on the main menu, hold ctrl+alt and press Settings. This should bring up a normally hidden option under settings called "The Rest". Click this, and scroll down until you see "cache-prototype-data" - enabling this will cache a lot of your startup data. This can dramatically reduce your startup times in some instances, and is definitely worth trying for this month's map. All right, that's all from me - go check out the new map and see what you think! Exchange String Help If anyone isn't sure how to use an exchange string, just go to new game like you're going to generate a new world, and at the bottom there's a button just above play labelled "Import map exchange string" - the icon looks like a little arrow going into a tray/bucket. Just copy the exchange string above and paste it into the box that comes up when you press that button. Press confirm, and that's it! You're good to go. Just generate the world and come back in a month to show us how your factory turned out! If you run into any issues check to make sure that you copied the whole string, including the three greater than/lesser than signs at the beginning and end, and make sure that your Factorio is up to date with the most recent version installed. (As of the time of this post, the most recent version of Factorio is 1.1.31.) Issues With Adding The Save File If you're uncertain how to use the save file I provided above, here are step by step instructions: 1) First, of course, is to actually download the file. Make sure you know where this file is so you can move it later. (It will be in your browser's default download folder unless you've changed it.) 2) Locate where Factorio's save folder is on your computer. If you've installed Factorio at its default location ( C:\Program Files\Factorio ) then there will be a shortcut to your saves folder there called "saves". Double-click it to go to the saves folder. 3) Take the file you downloaded and move it into this folder. That should be it! Now just launch Factorio and make sure you sync your mods to this save before playing. If you'd like to play this map specifically (for example, if this month has some per-save settings you don't feel like messing with) then you'll notice if you load the map normally your player will be named "ChaosBeing" (since I'm the one who started the save, of course). To get around this, you can host it as a local multiplayer game and then save. You should now appear as your own character when you load the map from now on! If you have any issues, feel free to ask in the comments below, or in the monthly map's channel on the official Factorio Discord. Want To Play With Others? If you have an open public server, let me know in the comments below or send me a PM and I'll add your server here! /u/Galapagon going strong with another community map - go check out their progress and see how they're doing! If you are a streamer or let's player who will be recording yourself building a new factory on a community map, I'd be happy to add a link to your channel here! About Mods Since mods can affect how a world spawns and ores are distributed, as well as add or change items and functionality, it's important to make sure that we're all playing the same game by the same rules. For example, if one person's playing vanilla and someone else is playing with Bob's mods, even if they use the same seed and map settings you still couldn't very well say they were playing the same game, and the way they'd play would differ enormously. On the other hand, playing with mods that either don't add any new items or change terrain, or that simply don't change the base game in a significant way, aren't going to change the way you solve problems or the kinds of problems you'll face themselves. As such, these sorts of mods are perfectly fine, even if some people are playing with them and some people aren't. Even Distribution is a wonderful example of a mod that, while very useful, does not inherently change the way the game is played. Then there are also mods like RadarPlus for RSO that do add new items, but still don't really change the way the game is played. I've decided to put together a list of these optional mods that I think are ok to use on any map below. The list is by no means comprehensive; it simply serves as an example of the sorts of mods that should be fine. Optional Mods Note: I can't imagine any situation where this could be an issue, but if you're the author of one of the mods listed here (and can offer me some proof of this) and for whatever reason would like me to remove your mod from this post, I'd be happy to comply. It's entirely possible some of these mods either don't work with the current version of Factorio, conflict with each other, or in some manner just don't work. I can't test them all, let alone every configuration of them, so you might wanna back up your world before adding one of these. Posted: 01 May 2021 09:01 AM PDT That's right, dear reader. I have configured every fluid train schedule -since the introduction of train schedules- by manually setting "Fluid Count = 200k" (for 3/8 trains) and "Fluid Count = 0" criteria. I have a keyboard macro that enters "200000" because I've grown tired of typing it over the years. Now, I discover it has all been for naught. I'm going to go drink a beer and meditate on just how much of my life has been spent entering these criteria into Factorio. God, I love this game. [link] [comments]

Factorio spreaded/balanced mining? Posted: 02 May 2021 02:37 AM PDT Is there anyway to distribute the load on a ore patch? I got 15*2 miners lined up in a yellow belt this way the belt is ways full but the problem is that when this belt isn't being fully utilized the only miners that activate are the ones in the back that means that I'm mining my patch faster from behind than in the front. Is there anyway to spread the load? kinda like an ssd? [link] [comments]

Compressing one side of blue belt with 2 stack inserters. Posted: 02 May 2021 05:53 AM PDT Literally unplayable! https://reddit.com/link/n35tye/video/s10c03gmfpw61/player Who can explain, why belt is compressed in one case and not in other? P.S. Leftmost inserter in both cases have stack of 8 P.P.S. Actually on upper variant the gap is 8 OR 7 sometimes. So 8 items doesn't fit and inserter wait for next gap (with 1 item hold). But in lower one case, 8 items always fit. So why? (and how to compress belt with two inserters far from each other) [link] [comments]
