Research into AI playing Factorio, RL, GNNs

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 04:08 AM PDT

I've seen some posts before that describe infeasibility of using machine learning, neural nets etc to play factorio, but also posts on how cool it would be to do something of that nature.

Recently noticed a few papers on this on arxiv lmao, this one directly targets factorio:

    https://arxiv.org/pdf/2102.04871.pdf

While the whole game is not easily solvable, sub goals can be solvable, and eventually can combine into one larger intelligent system!

I personally think something in the direction of reinforcement learning and graph neural networks are best suited for eventually "solving" factorio with 1. the dynamics and environment of factorio being I believe quite easy to learn or model for RL agents (as in actions correlate to a obvious outcome) and 2. the extreme knowledge graph one would generate to play this game as a human can be learned and exploited using Graph Neural Networks (GNNs)

GNNs present a unique way to bring the best of two worlds, the learning power of neural nets, and the representation power of graphs for knowledge (knowledge graphs). This is excellent for planning and as we all know, a good base needs meticulous planning. I hope GNNs are explored more heavily within RL. In particular, GNNs are capable of learning graph based optimization algorithms, and supposedly algorithms like MCTS (as used by DeepMind in AlphaGo) can be learned by GNNs!

    Anyway, just my two cents.

    SE Endurance: Early game

    Hi r/factorio!

We, u/winstonyin and me, are planning to write a series of posts on our play through of Space Exploration. As there isn't much SE content out there, and we just finished our first SE world after quite some struggles, we'll be writing down what we learned there and take you through the design of our new base: SE Endurance. Along the way, we hope to cover things like city block design, rail layouts, remote ore mining, and possibly spaceships. An overview of our previous base and the early red&green science stages of the new base can be found at SE Endurance: Early game.

    New omni smelter approach

    New omni smelter approach

omni smelter without stored iron plates. If you set burn iron plates, two of the furnaces make iron plates and three steel. with a blacklist for the filter inserter the raw material stays in the cargo wagon. Iron plates come out if you burn iron ore.

Can anyone explein me how it works?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 08:52 AM PDT

    hello,

I build a circuit module from here: https://factorioprints.com/view/-LWY-DinCSVmp1fy3OVa But I cant't figured out how the outpost station works. There's some wires, conditions, and commands, but it seems that [U] station are always ON. No matter if the module is working, no matter is there cargo in chest to be send...

Can anyone help me and explain "how it works"?

(I tried also here: https://forums.factorio.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=90498 but failed)

    Base organisation - Logistics Bots

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 08:25 AM PDT

It drives me wild when i go to my base and i have yellow storage boxs everything with a bunch of random crap in them.

I find it especially annoying when i go to outposts and theres a ton of stuff in yellow boxes that would never be used/needed at that outpost.

Anyone come up with any good solutions? so that the bots take the stuff back to a sensible place so if i need anything i know where to find it? even better if the solution can get stuff loaded on to trains and taken back to the main base!

Separating train networks without actually separating them?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 04:20 AM PDT

I am working on a base consisting of multiple identical blocks. I want to have some external shared resources, for example iron, and internal, like circuits. How can I keep circuit train restricted to it's block without naming each station specific to the block? One way is to have a terminal passing iron from outside, but it adds more trains, more inserters and complicates things in general.
