Electric Furnaces with eff1 is better than early solar for pollution reduction

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 06:16 AM PDT

We're gonna assume here that the grid is 100% steam engines + boilers, and every bit of power the solar panels can make during the day is used.

25 solar panels make 42 kW over the course of a day each, so that's like 1.05 MW of clean energy.

    So that's (1.05 / 1.8) * 30 pollution / min = 17.5 pollution / min saved with 25 solar panels

Now let's find the impact of 1 electric furnace with 2 eff 1 modules, again we assume the furnace will run constantly. This guy runs at 72 kW and 0.4 pollution / min, compared to its chief competitor at this stage, the steel furnace, which runs at 90 kW and 4 pollution / min.

So you save 18 kW, which is 0.3 pollution / min from boilers, and you save 3.6 pollution / min from the furnace itself. So an eff 1 electric furnace saves 3.9 pollution / min.

So to do a cost benefit analysis, let's find how many solar panels it takes to reduce 3.9 pollution.

    (25 / 17.5) * 3.9 = 5.57 solar panels

    5.57 solar panels cost:

153.2 copper ore, 222.8 iron ore

1 electric furnace with 2 eff 1 costs:

20 stone ore, 90 copper ore, 90 iron ore, 15 coal, 307.7 crude

I found these results surprising, as I always considered electric furnaces with efficiency 1 to be a last step of pollution reduction, but really they are quite strong.

Especially because if you want more than 70% pollution reduction on your boilers you need accumulators, raising the cost even further

TLDR: electric furnaces with 2 eff 1 modules are roughly twice as effective as solar panels at reducing pollution for the ore required to build them

    How to get past oil?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 08:49 PM PDT

I've played this game for years and years, and yet I almost always get stuck at oil and restart the world. Whenever I get oil I freak out because I don't know how to make it look good and neat and tidy. I've gotten past oil before but I always get freaked out whenever I try to work on it or optimize it. I really want to continue but it is just such a big hurdle I don't know how to begin.

Same goes when I copy/cut and paste something, a blueprint keeps on appearing on my inventory.

Searching mod that converts a blueprint to logistic request

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 10:49 PM PDT

    Hi,

Is there any mod that looks at a blueprint and puts all items into a personal logistic request so my robots can deliver me?

I am building a city block seablock base and would like to go to my mall and have all items ready.

How to automatically delete helmod blueprints?

How to automatically delete helmod blueprints?

    Hey there,

someone know a automatic way to remove those blueprints?

Its a nice feature, but these blueprints laying in inventory... is atleast... useless.

I tried the picker mod, which can delete empty bp.... but it didnt help fix those bp...

Maybe a mod which deletes ALL blueprints in inventory?

Keep Inventory and toolbar in map editor?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 05:04 AM PDT

For every playthough i open a new map in Map editor to design new Blueprints and test things out. But every time i save the map and reopen it i lose all my Inventory and Toolbar. Now every time i reopen the map i have to recreate the toolbar again. Is there a way to keep the Toolpar and/or the Inventory in Map editor?

Edit: Okey i found a work around. Download the mod Editor Extentions and start a new Creativ Game. There you can create your toolbar and just switch to Map Editor by pressing the shortcut you choosen in your settings.

Why is solar considered late game compared to nuclear?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 08:01 PM PDT

This is my 3rd game in the past month, and during that time I've watched a few videos and read wiki entries, all alluding to solar being the "final stage" for power. Why is this? Why is nuclear considered mid-game? Solar only works part of the day while nuclear is constant and barely requires any effort to mine/convert. In my first 2 games, with little understanding, I used solar as a temp stop-gap measure to get from coal/steam to nuclear. But then I see these videos saying the opposite. What's the reasoning here?

Just finished my first playthrough! Came from DSP. Few Comments

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 10:49 AM PDT

First of all, my god this game is amazing! Honestly at first I felt the graphics were a bit lacking, but the gameplay is just so good that I didn't care after a few minutes playing.

    1. What an enormous difference does it make to have some experience. I played Dyson Sphere Program before, and it took me about 100 hours to "beat the game". Even though I had never played Factorio before, these games are pretty similar, so it took me 30h to launch a rocket and "beat the game" here, and it was a pretty chill run. Not sure it this is a good or bad time, but I liked it =)
    2. I loved DSP with all my heart, since I absoluetly love space exploration. Also it has stunning graphics. But the amount of different elements in this game is mesmerizing in terms of what you can do but still without being overwhelming.
    3. Trains are so awesome, I really want to try mixing and expanding my railroad a lot!
    4. I absolutely hate oil and all oil-related stuff. So much hassle to make it work properly. Hope to learn how to handle it better.
    5. Logic circuits are out of this world. Being an engineer/programmer, I really want to try some crazy stuff with these!
    6. My starter base is kind of messy, it works using a main bus but it's kind of crammed, so expansion would be kind of hard. Should I start a new game or just abandon the base and relocate to "restart" elsewhere in the map? Kind of feeling lazy to not have the construction bots in the early new game.
    7. I'm on peaceful mode. If the game runs for a very long time, do biters evolve "too much" and become unkillable?
    8. Didn't really use many blueprints (mostly used the ingame copy function to expand), definitely want to try these out more.
    9. Didn't wuite get the hang of uranium. Without the enrichment, the 235 variant just doesn't come along often enough to keep outages from happening. And with the enrichment, it takes forever to get the first 40 units to start the process. Wasn't able to properly make it work in my run =/

Props to the games devs, this is a brilliant game! And props to the community, so many helpful tips and videos around the internet. I hope to build some huge crazy stuff in the future!

3x3 Chunk Solar Array (30.1 MW)

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 06:44 PM PDT

Correction: the title should say 30.3 MW, not 30.1 MW

After experimenting with solar arrays, I present my 3x3 chunk solar array design. It is not quite as efficient as some larger designs, but using a 3x3 chunk design allows the blueprint to be placed only once from the map screen (unless building over water). This blueprint can also be extended in all 8 directions, including diagonals.

    Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/raw/xYPthdnB

Factorio Prints: Factorio Prints: 3x3 Chunk Solar Array (30.3 MW)

    Figures:

    • 30,386 KW (net sustained)
    • 30,786 KW (gross sustained)
    • 3x3 chunks (96x96 tiles)
    • 303.30 tiles/MW
    • 3.37 MW/chunk

Note that for one tile, there are 4 radars and 5 roboports. When tiled, this drops to 1 radar and 2 roboports for each tile.
