The Factory Must Grow: Automation in Factorio Posted: 09 Feb 2021 06:58 PM PST Hi all, This is a continuation from the previous posts, first the initial ideas: https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/e73ktb/evolutionary_algorithms_lua_and_more/ Then a seminar while we were writing our first paper: /r/factorio thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/jzkayj/the_factory_must_grow_automation_in_factorio/ /r/technicalfactorio thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/technicalfactorio/comments/jzkcil/the_factory_must_grow_automation_in_factorio/ YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ie01GLGB5s&feature=emb_title And now the first paper itself (preprint, we're awaiting judgement on whether it passes peer-review or not) is available for public viewing: https://arxiv.org/abs/2102.04871 Some notes: this is NOT peer reviewed yet and may contain errors, and certain elements may be removed or added after peer review. The interface we describe is not yet publicly available, but will be in the near future. I had some people ask if there's a website for our project: other than the upcoming github, no, not yet, but hope to one day. This is the first stage of many papers in this project, we have many ideas of where to go, but are open to hearing more! Please let me know if you have any questions, happy to answer. Abstract: Efficient optimization of resources is paramount to success in many problems faced today. In the field of operational research the efficient scheduling of employees; packing of vans; routing of vehicles; logistics of airlines and transport of materials can be the difference between emission reduction or excess, profits or losses and feasibility or unworkable solutions. The video game Factorio, by Wube Software, has a myriad of problems which are analogous to such real-world problems, and is a useful simulator for developing solutions for these problems. In this paper we define the logistic transport belt problem and define mathematical integer programming model of it. We developed an interface to allow optimizers in any programming language to interact with Factorio, and we provide an initial benchmark of logistic transport belt problems. We present results for Simulated Annealing, quick Genetic Programming and Evolutionary Reinforcement Learning, three different meta-heuristic techniques to optimize this novel problem. Posted: 10 Feb 2021 03:08 AM PST I downloaded it from a website 2 weeks ago and I felt so bad since it's a good game, but I'm such a poor student the I have to beg my mom for money. And today I finally bought it at steam! LET THE FACTORY GROW! [link] [comments]

Had my first ever crash to desktop Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:54 AM PST Krastorio 2 + Space Exploration When setting up a field of maroon solar panels, suddenly game stopped responding and got a fatal exception error. I was already late to bed so didn't bother submitting the log, just went to bed instead. Lost at most 5 minutes, so don't mind. This was my first bug / error / crash in about 500 hours played. So I figured it was noteworthy enough to proclaim to you all. That is all, carry on. [link] [comments]

Newbish Player: How Important Is Early Game Layout? Should I Study It Or Let It Come Naturally? Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:21 AM PST Hey all! I've got maybe 15 - 20 hrs into factorio over the last several months (and over several games I didn't get far in). I'm having trouble "getting into" the game, though I can see all the potential, and it really does look amazing. I just think I have trouble setting up at the beginning, getting flustered/confused later, and giving up. My issue is basically the title. I'm worried that I'm really messing up my early game layout (for a basic gameplay, not min-maxing yet), and it ends up with me constantly having to try to redesign things to make something fit. I notice this especially around when I start having to use green science potions. So, I'm wondering, how important is the early game layout? Is it minimal (like, say you are going to be changing it a lot later anyway so it doesn't matter), or essential? Then, should I actually take time to study it, or just keep trying until I figure it out? I've read a little about hubs and those seem interesting, and I know that people use different ratios and formulas to figure out how many they need of X and Y to produce Z... or something along those lines. Should I be looking into these more? Any other basic info or tips for a struggling wanna-be-aficionado would be greatly appreciated. Tl;DR: The 3rd and 4th paragraphs cover the gist if you don't want to read the whole thing. [link] [comments]

Posted: 10 Feb 2021 08:06 AM PST Hello fellow factorians, Any idea why this might be happening? (Note I do not have 1 single logistic network but many small ones not communicating on purpose). Thank you all. [link] [comments]
