A new spidertron model! (just a photo edit, maybe there will be some good mods for 1.1?!)

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 04:45 AM PST

First rocket launched! No game has captivated me quite like this in some time. Here’s a mini-review with some thoughts and tips.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 08:19 PM PST

On a very high level, this is a bit of a mashup between a city builder and a crafting/survival game. Maybe even throw a bit of real-time strategy in there too. I'm a fan of all three genres, so it makes sense I was drawn to Factorio.

The biggest thing this game gets right is that the high level of intricacy is met with a low level of urgency. And while speed and efficiency is a main focus of the game, there isn't much punishment for slowing down.

Now, there isn't zero urgency, as there is a balance of pollution and expansion with defense/offense against biters. It sounds like a lot of people on this sub play with biters off or attacks disabled, but I really liked them. City builders without any external threat and all the time in the world tend to lose my interest.

But for the most part, there is no big rush. Once you figure something out and get it automated it just hums along... until of course you're unhappy with its speed and want to expand or replace it. It's a game where you have "a lot of plates spinning at once", but for the most part they never come crashing down. They just slow down, or are suddenly too slow compared to the rest, and you speed them up how you see fit.

It's game of finding a problem, figuring it out, getting a nice little endorphin boost, moving on to the next problem, and occasionally murdering some insects who were trying to avenge the trees you also murdered.

The design also turns a potentially frustrating aspect into a charming one: the player character. When a game is all about building a city/system it often doesn't use a physical player character. You just are some sort of god with a top-down view of your territory. Having a player that needs to travel places and bring objects from point A to point B is just adding tedium. But Factorio just turns the limitations of your character into yet another problem to solve and optimize. By the end of the game you feel like a robot god that can make structures appear and disappear on a whim.

Overall I just really have nothing but good stuff to say about this game. I would recommend any new player reading this take advantage of the wiki and this subreddit. There were some very basic questions I had answered here that would have really stumped me. But avoid walkthroughs, instructional videos, and pre-made blueprints. The fun of playing the first time is figuring out your own little designs.

Can I make a server for me and my friends which runs as a headless server when I'm not playing

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 04:43 AM PST

Can I make a server for me and my friends which runs as a headless server when I'm not playing? Alternatively can I run the games as a headless server and then close it and load it in a normal multiplayer game when I want to play too? I don't think the downtime of this is a big deal as I only have a couple of people I would be playing with.

After more than 500h in the game I thought that I finally need to overcome my biggest enemy: trains and LTN. So in sandbox I build this mini network and spent more than I want to admit to figure out how to make it work.

Would be cool to have turret variants that can use shells and rockets

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 06:30 AM PST

I strikes me that the game seems to lack emplacements that make use of tank shells or rockets, both of which would be cool and add to the variety of defensive lines. Especially since the Spidertron is a thing one just wonders what would be feasible, and it feel like a missed opportunity that some options are only uses by e.g. the tank.

The way I'd picture these is pretty straightforward, e.g.:

    • crafting these turrets would cost a combination of e.g. concrete, gearwheels, steel and circuits (green, possibly red)
    • they could be larger e.g. 2x3 or 3x3 tiles
    • the cannon emplacement could feature a slow turning speed, possibly a limited arc (like the flame turret), but preferentially target armored biters (e.g. Behemoths)
    • the rocket launcher emplacement could use volleys and limited reserves, but preferentially target ranged spitters over other biters
    • both variants would feature extended ranges over default turrets, but also lower rates of fire, or downtimes for reloads

A tacked-on thought would be regarding bots: it would be cool if e.g. roboports had the option to stack defensive robots which would be released if biters enter it's area of influence. The release itself could also be controlled by circuit conditions.

PS: is there a way to control construction bots, i.e. preventing them from repairing turrets while they are being engaged (or if biters are nearby), or rebuilding mines on ground that is still on fire (both are a bit problematic)?

Does anyone have a better design that I can use (perhaps more compact etc)Angels Mod

You have heard of sushi belts and you have heard of city blocks, but have you ever heard of sushi blocks?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 07:43 AM PST

Does anyone have a more elegant solution/blueprint to this? Combining two four-lane belts into 8 lanes of combined belts?

    Belts vs buffered inserters

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 11:43 PM PST

    The preparation

I ran some tests with belts and inserters to see what is the fastest way to move items. The machine consisted of: - Two input chests - Two input mass inserters - The testing lines (belt line and inserter line) - Two output mass inserters - Two output chests - Some circuit to make both lines start at the same time - Another circuit to decide which line was faster - 10 solar panels to provide energy

Both lines were 11 tiles long. The image: https://imgur.com/EdxCymz

    The execution

Both lines started with tier 1 belts/inserters. After every ran test the slower line got upgraded by the following rule: Belt -> Fast belt -> Express belt Inserter -> Fast inserter -> Mass inserter

There were two sets of tests. One was to transport one item and one to transport a stack of 50 items.

    Data

    Notation

    • Top row: tiers of inserters
    • Left column: tiers of belts
    • The letter in cell: Winning line (I for inserters, B for belts)

    One item:

    Belt/Inserter tier 1 2 3
    1 I I I
    2 B I I
    3 B I I

    50 items:

    Belt/Inserter tier 1 2 3
    1 B I I
    2 B B I
    3 B B I

    X1KV3 Week 9

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 05:37 AM PST

    X1KV3 Week 9

As promised here is X1KV3 Sit-rep Week 9

In Short. I am rebuilding everything in preparation for purple and yellow sciences. For a more detailed explanation please read on.
So, in case anyone missed it, I started a new map with science set to be 1,000 times more expensive than normal. I gave myself a large starting area and increased the yield of my resource patches. Biters, Evolution, Expansion and Pollution are all switched on, I cheesed cliffs to make them shorter and smaller and I cheesed biters Making fewer but larger bases. I have failed this challenge twice and this is my 3rd attempt.

    Greetings fellow factorions.

It has been quite a productive week for me in terms of factorio and I have managed to get several epic long days in towards completing this challenge. I have spent 4 days clearing out biter bases with flamers and lasers and I have secured at least double of my previous base area. it was a grind and mostly uneventful aside from some close calls and heroic moments it was just mostly creep a bit and save the game. creep a bit more and die.. reload and creep a bit more and save.. for 4 days ...but its done now and next time I face biters I will have better weaponry. With that new land secured I have to decide how to use it.
Just to recap a bit, I had made 5k ammo per minute to hold back the biters until I got flames and now that ammo is redundant. I put a lot of priority on those Iron ore lines to make sure i would never run out and the plan was to upgrade or change the priorities to better use that iron but now it comes to doing it, I can just see a spaghetti mess of half empty yellow belts belts and some of those belts dead end into builds im not using anymore. Further to this I have 3 old walls that are primarily made of gun turrets and all those turrets are full of ammo and coal from the started days and while i was repairing the burner inserters i would collect coal in my inventory from rebuilding and to save time i would then just dump that could into the nearest line of burner inserters. The problem is that now my redundant walls have burner inserters with 100 coal in each of them and i have hundreds and hundreds of burner inserters.

1 big thing that i noticed wrong was that i set the logistics up wrong for how my repair packs are loaded into my roboports for repairing the walls and while i have been playing I was not realising that south wall now has millions of repair packs and every box, roboport and spare place possible has a full inventory of repair packs. This was a mistake and coupled with all the other redundant or broken things in my base I have decided to rip up old base and rebuild everything to mid game specs using red belts, blue assembly machines and green inserters. This means I can re purpose all my ore patches and also rebuild my smelter stacks to a much more efficient set up using furnaces.

So i started to rip up my old east wall and built a brand new all singing all dancing east wall with flames, lasers and gun turrets. It is much more streamline and far more effective. It has dragon teeth walls and is also future proofed to allow for artillery if i ever get that. The wall took me 2 days to remove the old one and rebuild the new one and give it trains to replenish stock and fluids ect.. and this was using construction bots. I have made it universal so it will also be a copy paste blue print for west, north and south walls.

My original Mall has had bits boot strapped to it and it has lasted me well but it is not also redundant and starved or resources. I also have made some mistakes with over producing some things in the mall and about this time I realised how broken and clunky and awkward this base was. Now i was sure I wanted to just wipe everything out so I was left with a map that had 4 secured walls, Power and a Mall and then start from scratch making science over again. Also upgrading landfill because I am using millions of landfill in this playthrough. I have decided to make this a goal but to reach that goal I need an infrastructure in place to ...recycle my old base into my new base. For that I will need a recycling centre ..whoop whoop.

I have a recycling centre. It has for trains that are a 1-1-1, 2-2-2, 2-4-2 and a 4-8-4. They are my dump trains. They sit at recycling centre waiting for me to put a train stop down that says "dump1" or "dump2" ect and they will then go to that station stop and load any materials and return it to the recycling centre. I then have a six lane suhi belt that has filter stack inserters to take materials of the belt and send them to a recycling train that will take the components and re purpose them where ever needed. This way I can rip up an old build and load the old build into a dump train and send it to recycling centre and it all gets sorted back into stores. Also my recyling centre has 3 specific mall supply trains that will re purpose finished but unwanted products back into the mall. I have coal being recycled into my power and red ammo recycled into the wall repair hub and also hole train just to re purpose repair packs. It is highly likely that i will never need to make another repair pack for this game as I have so many but I am going to set it up so the ones I have made get used first.

So once that was set up I could then set up my new mall and make that much more useful to me with call trains. I have made stations at my new mall to allow for recycle trains to visit but also to load up my call trains. For instance. I have a 2-2-2 train that is full of all the components i need to make a mine. I then put a train stop down called "mine" and the train comes to me from the mall and i can make my mine and then put the unused components back into the train and send it back to base. I also have other trains. One called "robo" that will bring a 2-2-2 train full of construction bots and roboports ect...and others called "belts","war1" "build1" ect... they all sit at mall with a "no path" signal waiting for me to put the train stop down with their name and then they come to me. Typically I will call for Robo, Build1, Power and a dump train and then i can make my thing remotely nd then send the trains back to mall where they will restock. All this is probably quite standard but what isnt standard is using anything other than logistics bots to do this. I dont have logistic chests and so I have had to do it all with the most crzy spaghetti I have ever had to make using belt weaving and so much brain melting. Its not pretty but it works and most importantly it uses the old stock from recycle trains and old mall before it uses the new stock from new mall.

So that's about where I am right now. I am putting the infrastructure I need in place so I can make fast work of taking down my old base which took me 8 weeks to make and uses millions and millions of items. Those items can then be reused before I make more.

Power death spiral. It happened to me and I was scared. I was traveling around the map and saw that I had low power icon on a machine. I have 2.4GW of steam power and my base can use 1.9GW when im doing a blue science research so i wasnt sure why i was low power. I looked on the map to see but in that time I had no radar because power failed so i jumped in my train and went over to power to find that I had removed power poles to my two mines feeding the boilers and the coal belts were empty and the spiral of doom was upon me. I reloaded to a previous 20 minutes ago and went and put the power pole back but that wasnt enough to stop the spiral as the belts were already thinning out and i dont need them to be to far from empty to produce a death spiral. I reloaded to a previous hour and then I disconnected blue science and my labs from the grid. It took a bit to get it going again but its back up to full power 2.4GW I have already started work on my new power plant that will produce 4GW of power with my base expected to use 3.1GW of power for 2k science per minute oh and blue science is going again ... but not for much longer.

I have finished researching everything I can now until I get purple science. There is literally nothing else to research. I never did put those other 1k of science labs down and i finished weapon damage 3 at half speed which was a fitting revenge for the previous paint hat research caused me.

Biters are ... well they are still a problem from lime to time and as I kill biter bases close to me it allows my pollution to spread further and cause stronger attacks from larger bases but i think I am going to be ok. I need to remake north west and south choke points but all in good time as they are more than capable for now.

I am not sure if I had to rebuild my old base. Certainly when I made it I was thinking ahead but in the end I had such a tight space to work with that everything just became a squashed mess. Perhaps I could have done it or perhaps it would have left me into a spiral of death with power later on or a serious lack of resources and well i guess I want to cross the finish line in style rather than a ragged mess. The pressure is off now so please excuse me while i mess about in mid game for a month or so making everything look shiny and work like new.

You can watch this mind-numbingly 1 head strategy fails on twitch.tv/marcmerry I will always stream when im playing this playthrough and I will respond in chat if I see it but im really not the Mr twitch entertainment guy but I am happy if you want to watch this.

This week I think I will be tearing down old bass and making new smelter stacks. I need 125 red belts of iron ore..80 red belts of copper...360 oil refineries capable of processing 300k oil per minute ..ect... lots to do but the future is now not yellow... the future is red!

Thank for reading and have fun.

    New YouTube Series- Beginners Guide

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 06:44 AM PST

    Hi Guys and Girls,
I am starting my new content creation adventure path. I used to stream game on Twitch but I was not enjoying it. So i have moved to streaming and creating content on Youtube.

But my main love and focus is Factorio, I am so hooked on the game and want to share my love with others. Many people steer away from factorio because they see it as complicated or just dont understand.

So I am launching Factorio For Beginners on my channel. I would like any questions or ideas on how you think i could help people? Maybe you need help yourself as a new comer to the game.

Factorio Beginners Guide - Ep: 1

Any support given means the world to me
This is the first video i will post each time a new one comes out, Thank you in advance to all those that subscribe and enjoy the content i put out.

Why has my Nuclear reactor suddenly stopped producing anywhere near as much electricity as it was?

    https://preview.redd.it/vm4j4xow4na61.png?width=1217&format=png&auto=webp&s=2314ca0ddac5079e9ee036b55a1a67d624a54b41

I had the capability of producing ~100MW off the one reactor and I remember the temperature being at 999*C. Now the reactor is at 503*C and the reactor only produces 40MW. I changed nothing near the reactor and the reactor is still fueled. Can someone explain to me what has happened and how I can fix it?
