    Centralized power, decentralized power

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 07:42 AM PST

So I'm aware that some people do this, but it just occurred to me how efficient it may actually be. You can have a nuclear plant without any steam turbines. Instead, you have steam turbines where needed at factories and outposts, bringing the steam over on rails. This has the advantage of not creating pollution from small power production at outposts, nor having a bunch of plants varying production, nor even relying on power lines that are vulnerable to getting cut. Instead you pump out steam at a steady rate and use it where needed.

What other methods do you use for power in situations like these?

I am dipping my feet into 3D modeling and wanted to share. I am very proud, since I learned a lot of things (mainly texture related). Also factorio is a great source for inspiration.

How best to defend ore outposts?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 02:54 AM PST

Just wondering what's the best strategy for this. Having an ammo belt around your immediate base is easy enough, but extending it to every new ore outpost seems incredibly annoying and impractical. Does everyone just defend them with laser turrets?

    Circuit toggle between two sciences

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 08:02 AM PST

I'm trying to set up my science labs using 3 belts, so I need to share a lane between Military and Production science. I want to set up a circuit to switch between the two automatically depending on what I am researching. I grabbed a countdown [timer](https://factorioprints.com/view/-Lb49g\_yweJ8xgCAU8bC) that will give me a red signal if the science isn't moving for 20 seconds but I am having a problem figuring out how to use that to toggle between two sets of inserters. First set puts on Production science and takes off Military at the end of the belt to clear it, and vice versa.

Just started learning circuits so any help would be appreciated.

Is there a resource that does a good job explaining how signals vs chain signals really work?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 07:43 AM PST

I am trying to make a train system to bring in resources. I am using a 2-4-2 setup to go out and back. This is a single line that splits into three spurs, one for Iron, one for copper and one for coal. I have the Iron and the Copper offloading at the same place, Bjorn Gustav Baklid, and the coal offloading on a spur next to it at Crellas.

My problem is, I have trains getting hung up on the bypass areas. For example, When the Iron Train is loading up at Robin Rogge, the copper train, headed to Ghost Inferno will get hung in the top bypass until the Iron train finishes loading and heads back.

Is there any way to signal that the train is stopped at a station and loading so that the other train gets the all-clear? and can continue?

    Basic train passing problem

    Basic train passing problem

    Dear Factorybro,

I'm stil on my first game and I thougth that I found the good pattern of lights to make train avoiding each other (2 on the same way). But since I asked the same trains to wait less on each stop they have to cross each other more often and then it result in two train often "stuck".

To unstuck it I need the one on top to go backward and then again forward:

    Sadness

I'm currently aware that this is probably a real simple problem but I tried multiple time on the turorial and again there on my map but I really don't figure out how to solve it or because of what it happens (I suppose the bottom train arrive really fast and then the upper train start to engage before the light turn red)

Do anybody have an idea ? I tried to check train pattern on internet but I only found crazy one :s

    Thank you !
Edit: This community is just awesome, I just went out for 10min and got already 6 answear. Thank to all of you!

    Holiday Cheer Time!

    Holiday Cheer Time!

Hello everyone, I don't post on reddit very often, but I wanted to see if I could cheer some people up.

I'm a huge fan of Factorio and have been around since the beginning, but am not really part of the community. With everyone stuck at home due to covid and hurting for money I thought that I would spread some cheer by gifting Factorio to people who have always wanted it, but still don't have it.

With that said, there are some rules:

    1. You can't already own Factorio
    2. You can't use this for your friend
    3. Be kind, I'd prefer to give these gifts to people who can't afford it due to layoffs or financial hardships caused by covid

So if Factorio has been on your wishlist and you meet the criteria, today's your day! The first 10 people to message me requesting a copy will be gifted some Factorio love. All of which will be purchased through the Factorio website to support the developers.

P.S. I just realized there was already a Christmas key giveaway going on... well now there's two! :)

    Happy people: <3

How do I disable the highlighting of Newly unlocked recipes?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 05:53 AM PST

    hi,

since 1.1 there is this, rather annoying highlighting of newly unlocked recipes in the build menu.

How do I disable it? If possible global.

I can see, how a newbie can benefit from this function, but there is no benefit for veteran players. Especially in heavy modded saves, the bright yellow is quite overwhelming...

How many labs for 1,000 science per minute? Arranged how?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 05:23 AM PST

    Hello!

As per the title - I think I've setup now 1,000 science per minute. All I need to finish is to setup my new lab space! Is there a rule about how many labs are needed for this amount of science? Can I set them up like I did in the beginning (?) feeding by belt or by bot and then direct inserting from lab to lab to lab? Many thanks for any suggestions / recommendations.

    J
