Factorio Community Map Results - April 2020

    Posted: 01 May 2020 11:51 AM PDT

    Time's Up

Hands off the keyboard! Another month has come to a close, and it's time to share whatever you've got done with the rest of us!

Did you finish everything you would have liked to this time around, or did you wind up still having a few big, unfinished plans? Run into any particular issues, or were you pumping those rockets out like nobody's business? Here's the place to share your stories, screenshots, saves, or whatever else you've got!

    This Month

It's nice to throw a wrench into the usual works every now and again! Being able to figure out efficient designs and blueprints is fun, but then once they're made it becomes more a game of plopping them down. Having to work things out for a change was refreshing.

Did you use any of the optional mods for this month? If so, when making your post make sure to include what they were - it's not always easy to tell, and there's a big difference between having a mod like Rampant on and not! As always, share however you'd like - an album, a video, even a single image or just a text post is much appreciated. Sharing is not only the whole idea to begin with, but being able to look through everyone's bases is probably the part I enjoy the most!

    Next Month

Following the same theme as last month, I'm going to be trying to satisfy both the more experienced players with more time on their hands now, and the new players just getting into Factorio. Trying to accomplish this is harder than it sounds, but I think I've settled on a plan. I'm going to try and spotlight interesting mods that aren't too crazy in scope. Maybe even try combining a few you wouldn't ordinarily think to use to see how they play together.

I'm gonna give my selection of mods just a little more thought, and then May's thread should be up a little earlier in the day than usual. (Which is admittedly not all that early, but hey, it beats 9 PM!)

If you have any requests regarding mods or the map in general, leave them below and I might just see them in time to make a difference for this month. (And if not, there's always next month too~)

I just finished the game for the first time

    Posted: 01 May 2020 10:30 AM PDT

I just made a rocket for the first time after being on record playing 530 hours.

Now, I can go back to overengineering my base without the anxiety of making a rocket and thoughts of "you never finish the jobs you start, which is why you'll never get anywhere in life, because you always dive into details and forget about the big picture".

    Yey!

    City blocks or whatewer?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 10:44 AM PDT

Does anyone uses something except city blocks to build bases?

Currently there is not many of patterns to do so(at least known to me):

    1) spaghetti, - works well in the begining, not scalable. Everyone starts here.

    2) main bus - have limited scalability, easy to start with. Stops working when you came across 1k spm. Seems not working in mods, such as BA.

    3) city blocks - this conception are currently used by everyone. Makes your factory looks like chessboard.

    4) self-contained blocks? I don't know what the real name should go here but it's for conception to build blocks with everything included(even science and silo) in a single blueprinted block. So if you want to increase spm you just put more blueprints and build rails to this districts. Never seen any playthrough for this aproach and don't know about drawbacks.

Is there any other known alternatives to city blocks with pros and cons?

    Community Server Map results

    Posted: 01 May 2020 12:06 PM PDT

    Main results thread

I had a great time playing this community map, and we'll probably keep it running for a while as it's probably the largest I've ever participated in Factorio! By the end of the month we've launched 383 Rockets!

    The Players

First I want to shout out to all 32 players that hopped on this month and took a look or stuck around to help:

    Galapagon, Kaplya89, newnvrmal, TaelBE, zabutyr, ookl, Xyrtranna, sys64, hyspeed, Sp3rw3r, bazus1, t3Mz, Sojourn4, Anton-miko, MrBokchoy, andrew1423, f0kusekNEW, Dreyer, xiaoqiu371, Terra021, aberen, i_cant_think_of_a_username, xodous, Dadlop3, starch74, JJM6, NTTE, chunxiaoyi97, 99cows99, tauraniaakant, keentom, praemineo

Special shout outs to Bazus1, MrBokchoy, and Terra021 for all the hours they put in!

    The Time-lapse

I was hoping to have a time-lapse created for this month, then I learned a few things: You can't have a time-lapse on a headless server. No problem I thought, I'll use the replay and build a time-lapse from that. Apparently though, any time you change mods (we'll get to that in a minute) OR ANY update to the game is applied to the server, the replay function becomes unusable. So unfortunately there is no time-lapse for this month, but we'll experiment with users running credo on their systems and then compiling that into a video for next month.

    The Mods

This month we were running Bottleneck, even-distribution, Factorissimo2, LogisticTrainNetwork, OpteraLib, scattergun_turret, Squeak Through, VehicleSnap, Rampant

    Rampant

Oh boy, Rampant. If you've ever used it you know what I mean, if not let me give a brief explanation:

We collected at least 110 handguns this month.

Full disclosure - We definitely rolled back the server at least 5 times this month from biters swarming the base and destroying just about everything before we were able to respond. We spent hours pushing back biters, and their bodies made a river around our walls. We basically had someone full time running around making repairs, checking the bullet supply (which we had to put on belts BTW and was frequently deprived of input supplies) and just pushing against biters.

This is where those special shout-outs really started to come into play. It literally took all of us ( Anton-miko was helping defense too but then disappeared later in the month) to keep the base functioning and expanding for a solid week. It wasn't until we had bots that we were able to focus less on maintenance and focus more on expansion. IT WAS STILL NOT EASY! We had to tweak the bots a lot to try and keep them from flying over biter range, and constantly reproduce bots to replenish our stock. Which meant our overburdened input demand was made worse. It was hard, but we were able to slowly expand and get footholds on resources that we needed to get the base back in balance.

    UPS Drops

If you're not familiar with UPS (updates per second), you can think of it kind of like the server's FPS, except its tied to how much can be done in a tick (60 ticks per second). Normally if your UPS drops you'd inspect your server resources and adjust them if they're not keeping up with everything requested in a tick. This is also affected by the efficiency of the code. The devs have done an amazing job optimizing the code of the game, and it really shows when you compare it to rampant which would drop our UPS from 60 to 5-10 during the worst biter attacks. For a while we changed the game speed to .9 or just lived with it when we knew biters were coming, but eventually it reached a point that the biters weren't a challenge anymore so we disabled Rampant to get our UPS back.

    The Map

What the heck Chaos! Why is there only one coal patch remotely near spawn!? We had to switch to solid fuel for smelting and power just to extend our coal supply for plastic until we could reach the expansion. We had robots before we had our coal expansion that's how bad it was. I imagine that if we didn't start switching to solid fuel as early as we did the map would have stalled out.

    The Base

It was a bit crazy this month but we've learned a bit for next month. We need to plan for 4 rails from the start of the map, and determine a single train size, or compatible train sizes that will fit in those rails. The traffic was manageable, but we ended up doing lots of tweaks to make it work.

We were also using Factorissimo, something Bazus1 will sing the praises of. Personally, I can see some use for it in the tight spots, but if the base is planned properly land is always abundant in Factorio, and a bigger base overall might have helped alleviate some of the rail traffic. We've yet to decide if it will be included next month.

Mind helping me with this train setup? So the middle lane has one train going two ways and the two horizontals go with the arrows. I've tried all kinds of setups with the railsignals and sometimes they just stay still even if the other train has moved. I'll have more pictures in the comments.

    The evolution of a newbie

    Posted: 01 May 2020 01:16 AM PDT

So after asking plenty of questions and getting some great help from folk here I thought I would show how my base has moved from the spaghetti to some semblance of a bus.

    Album here

Plan for today is to get purple science but need to make some oil processing upgrades. Any major problems that you can foresee in the near future? Part of my old base is still up and running as although the copper has run out it still has iron being shipped in and is making belts, inserters etc so will probably move that over soon

    no gun?

    no gun?

    Hi,

I just started with the demo of Factorio but I'm struggling already.

I build the radar and the map has expanded, it now gives me 'small worms' that keep spitting. For what I've read online I should have a gun that I can fire with [space] or [c]. But the gun and ammo icon in the right corner are red and pressing [space] or [c] doesn't do anything.

Of course I tried to check online first for a solution but I couldn't find a tutorial which looked liked the version I'm playing. Who can help me out?

Construction bots should prioritize closest targets

    Posted: 01 May 2020 09:29 AM PDT

I made a playthrough of Factorio 0.17 after the initial release last year and made a big list of improvement ideas. Unfortunately, my computer failed since then and I never managed to post it... Still, I want to post at least the most important improvement idea that came up all the time during my time building.

Construction bots seem to choose the next thing to construct randomly. They should always choose the closest target!

Reasons: - less flight time means faster placement - less flight time means means more entities placed before recharging - especially for personal construction bots it's a huge annoyance for me to place a blueprint and the bots start flying to the very edge of the construction area - this is even more critical in early game when bots are slow and energy is limited - currently, even with bots it can make sense to "help them" by placing entites yourself - with this simple sounding fix, I believe the effectivity of (personal) construction bots could be more than doubled.

I really hope the devs see this and have mercy on us to fix this! This is more important than animated cannon shells 🐰
