    Rocket Control Unit Ring

Well crap. Turns out that gold science in Seablock is locked behind Tungsten, so I need to upgrade everything. So here's a screenshot of my base so far [Warning: 77MB image]

No Spoon 0.17 with default settings

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 09:45 PM PST

Finally managed to get it! I wanted to try to beat it with 100% default settings. Speedrunners can do it in 3 hours, so surely I, someone with no speedrunning experience, can do it too! Ended up taking 7 attempts, using the fixed seed 2821187482 each time.

    First try:

I designed this compact factory ahead of time to deliver 1 science/second and then switch to producing rocket parts at the end at a rate of 1 rocket / 20 minutes, not counting productivity module 3s (I probably could have done fine with less science/second but that's ok). I thought I was doing well until it came time for me to actually build it. After red and green science I tried to follow the plan and get the spacings right for all my green circuits, but I could tell it was going to take way too long so I stopped. Plus, it had military science which wasn't needed for rockets anyways. I stopped after 3:27:10.

    Second time:

Went with a "wing it" strategy, it went a lot better because I had a better idea of what I wanted my layout to be and because I built quickly and in-order instead of compactly and spread-out. The biggest problem I still had was that I wasn't setting up a mall for the one-off needs like inserters or assembling machines (I sort-of had a mall but the different-output factories weren't connected and they all needed me to dump items into chests.) I had trains sending in iron, oil, and stone (turns out I never needed the extra stone). Near the end I realized I hadn't started yellow science and there wasn't really anywhere good for me to set it up, so I stopped after 6:55:50.

    Third time:

This time I had finalized my 1 sps factory, which I could actually reasonably build from one end to the other (I had actually mostly designed this factory before realizing there was not much room left and I had no way to shift resources to rocket parts). Started out, things were looking good, it even had a mall! Then biters attacked and I realized I had forgotten to research turrets/military. After using up all my bullets with my pistol and punching the biters, I said "screw it" and restarted at 0:58:46.

    Fourth time:

Things went much better, I made it most of the way through and stopped at 7:36:25 when I still hadn't finished researching rocket control units (since building the rocket parts alone would take most of that). I had the wise idea to kill the west, south, and east biter bases that were attacking me often, and I had used pipes instead of trains to get oil and I had a copper train.

    Fifth time:

Early on I guess I decided "there's no need to buffer coal, I mine it fast enough". So I got a total blackout. I tried to grab some coal and manually restart my boilers but it wasn't enough. I went to setup some miners in the nearest other coal patch but biters were attacking my transport belts so I just decided to call it quits at 4:40:53. But at least I had finalized my mall placement and iron, copper, and steel smelting column placements.

    Sixth time:

Rocket was 98% done at 8:00:20, with productivity module 3s. I think my biggest problem was that a round trip time for a train wasn't short enough to prevent gaps in the ore shipping.

    Seventh time:

Finally did it. This time I had super-long belts from the far-away ore patches to my factory. Around like 3/4 of the way through I noticed I had a brownout (coal buffers ran out), so I shut off the science part of my factory and went to the far-away coal patch and brought that in, to serve as a dedicated boiler fuel supply. That did the trick and I launched my rocket at 7:24:41.

    Album

Edit: Yes, I had considered using solid fuel for furnaces/boilers, but I thought buffered coal would be enough. Besides, oil is a limited resource and I need it for rocket fuel! It's not like I'll have it in excess or anything.

Everything enemy related set to max. No defence enhancing mods. Lets see how far I get. Is it hard? Has anyone done this before?

    Un-slumped

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 07:48 AM PST

Ive found myself in a bit of a Factorio slump lately- I just rolled over 1500 hours on steam so while it's not surprising, I WANT to keep playing but I had a hard time shaking the feeling that I had "solved" the game. I've built a pretty successful vanilla-ish megabase. I've played through bobs/angels 3 times. I played through as much seablock as I care to (300ish hours).

I tried some of the newer mods like industrial revolution and krastorio. They just didn't stick for me, not sure why.

Anyways, I finally downloaded the Ribbon Maze mod and booted that up on Marathon mode. I am really surprised honestly but I love it. I've not been this invested into a world for months. It takes FOREVER to make meaningful progress and the space constraints, along with the ratio changes from expensive mode totally blow up all of my design knowledge to the point where I am forced to innovate for the first time in a long time.

I just think it's funny how a relatively small change to the game can make it feel new in a way that overhaul mods do not.

Stayed up late last night, woke up and my base has doubled.

I'm working on a rail grid with the eventual goal of 500 spm, but I don't think i'll ever need this much space.

The red line through the center is the old turret wall, new sections are being built in the south as fast as the bots can fly there.

    Enable research queue after gamestart

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 04:22 AM PST

Do anyone know why the research queue can not be enabled after the game has been started? It doesn't make any sense to me!

Can it be done via a mod?

More effective ways to build the factory?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 04:42 AM PST

So, I've been playing factorio for a while now, but I can never automate blue science and my design are very large. I always have trouble with resources and I was wondering if the lovely engineers on this sub could give me some tips. Thank you!

    Input Lag headless server linux

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 04:15 AM PST

    Hey there,

yesterday we deployed the headless server on my linux v-server. (16GB Ram, 500Mbit/s Connection,6 Cores)

and we got massive input lags while playing the game. (Both of us have a 250Mbit/s Connetion).

When we try to pick up items from conveyor belts, there's a 1-2sec delay before picking them up.

If we both shoot at something, there's a huge delay and rubberbanding.

I've used the default server settings. Any ideas how to fix the lag?

    Concrete everywhere

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 09:56 PM PST

Hey all, I'm one of those people who like to concrete the entire base, and other things besides... but it really bothers me that little tufts and other decorations aren't cleared by laying the concrete. They just kinda sit on top, which looks weird. Anyone know of any way to fix this?
