LPT: You REALLY want to backup your blueprints, and it's easy

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 12:33 AM PST

    The Problem:

Several in the past have posted in agony, having accidentally deleted their entire blueprint book representing hours or weeks of work. (/u/factorioteam, you guys do a phenomenal amount of work, and we appreciate it! But please make time soon to add a simple confirmation dialog, "Do you really want to delete this entire blueprint book?")

The best tip I've seen is going quickly to the file location of the blueprint storage and making a manual backup (https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/apmc38/if_you_accidentally_delete_a_blueprint_from_your/).

Unfortunately, when I accidentally deleted my book that contains ALL of my blueprints for my 1KSPM base-in-progress, I went almost immediately to find the .dat file, but it had already updated itself, which means my prints were gone forever. Gone.

    The Solution:

Except then I realized that yesterday I had made an impromptu backup and hadn't realized it. A friend wanted to see my base, so I opened it in multiplayer. He spent a couple of hours helping me, so I figured out how to share the blueprint book with him by dragging it from the "My Blueprints" side to the "Game Blueprints" side. It's the first time I've used that side, never had a need before. Now, I realized that it had a 1-day-old backup of my prints. So I lost a day's worth of updates, but that's nothing compared to the weeks I've been storing up in there.

    The Habit:

So now I'm making a habit of simply dragging my books over to the other side every once in a while, so I always have a simple and easy to access backup. Thought the same habit might be useful to you guys, too. ("It'll never happen to me...")

    Tips on mega-base

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 06:57 AM PST

I've been playing for about 200 hours in factorio and have beaten the game a few times but one thing I've always struggled with is starting a mega-base. I always either lose interest or am just unhappy with how it's going so far. Any tips on starting and finishing a decent mega-base would be greatly appreciated!

Is factorio worth it in 2019?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 12:34 PM PST

For some background knowledge, I've only ever bought one game in my life bc I've always been short on Money, but I've been thinking about getting Factorio. I've always played thousands of games to figure out what genre I like most and I love efficiency-based games where you can have tons of different possibilities for max efficiency and output.

I was wondering if it was still worth it in 2019? I've been attempting to get Factorio for the past 3 years, but never able to get it.

You know when you’re 70+ hours into the game. Big spaghetti sprawling mess. Then you realise you researched something to demolish cliffs near the beginning of your playthrough..

Lol. The amount of time I spent looking for nice open areas to work in for certain parts of my base when right next to my starting area would've been perfect. Ah well. I had a heap of fun on my bug safaris!

My fuel provider station or: how I get rid of wood

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 07:20 AM PST

My fuel provider station or: how I get rid of wood

    Fuel Provider Station

This is my fuel provider station on my current rail world map. It collects 3 types of resources; solid fuel, coal, and wood. It has 3 incoming and 1 outgoing train stops. This station serves fuel to smelters and boiler stations.

    Wood has the priority

I read the logistic network content of the station and use the combinators; 1, 2, 3, and 4; to arrange the resources to load up to the fuel train. The requester chests that loads the fuel train are connected to the circuit network with mode "Set requests". Wood has the priority and needs to go first. Combinator 1 checks if there is any wood in the station. If so it sends the "1 Wood" signal. If there is no wood in the station combinator 2 passes every signal to combinator 3. Since solid fuel is better than coal, it has the second priority. Combinator 3 checks if there is any solid fuel in the station. If so, it sends the "1 Solid Fuel" signal. If not, combinator 4 sends the "1 Coal" signal.

This resource signal is passed to combinator 5. Combinator 5 multiplies this signal with 300 to set the logistic requests for the requester chests. So, in the end, these chests are requesting either 300 wood, 300 solid fuel or 300 coal.

    Sending the train

Here is the tricky part. How do we know if the train is full and ready to go? I'm using two wagon trains which means 80 item slots to fill. I can't use the "Full cargo" condition. Because say that we have 79 slots are filled with coal and 1 slot has 10 wood in it. In this case, you need to wait for 90 wood to meet the condition of "Full cargo", which might not be in the station inventory at that moment.

I thought about counting the occupied slots on the train and when it's 80 send the train. This wouldn't work either. For example, when you read the train content and get 40 wood, you can't tell if they are on the same wagon or not. They might be separated and occupy two slots.

Then I went for a simple way and that's good enough for me. I just count every item on the train with combinator 6, and if it's high enough send a green signal with combinator 7. But I don't send the train immediately with the green signal, I added "2s of inactivity" condition with "AND" operator. This keeps the train loading even it has reached the threshold.

    Collecting the wood

The wood is transferred between the "Wood Provider" and "Wood Receiver" stops. "Wood Provider" stop is in the main base. All the wood in the base is collected by the robots and loaded to the wood train parked at this stop.

When I'm building an outpost and chop lots of trees, I simply call the wood train and load it up, then send it back.

And that's it. If you have a modular base that has smelters and boilers at separate locations, this station can help. And of course, this is a mid-game solution. It won't be that useful after nuclear power and electric furnaces.

    Just got green science production!

    Just got green science production!

I just got to green science and I'm really excited, so I wanted to share my factory.

    FACTORY

    iron refining

    copper refining

    component creation

    green science!!

I might restart though because I am running into an issue where I can't run thru my base and I lose a lot of time trying to get from point A to point B. I'm pretty happy with my design but maybe I might try to space things out a bit more.

What are some of the best mods/mod packs to play?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 02:16 AM PST

I've play a lot of vanilla and recently started a game with Bobs mods. I kind of wanted to try some others. I've seen a few others on this sub too. Any suggestions?

    First time multiplayer offer

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 08:49 PM PST

Hello everybody. I'm just starting to get the hang of this game and I thought, as addicting as this game is, it might be more fun with a buddy or two. Help me learn the ropes. After several restarts I've finally got something going. Not at all optimal from what I've seen on here but it's a start and I'm producing. The factory is growing... slowly. Pm me if you're interested. Ill make a discord and invite something like 3-4 interested people. I'm in the EST time zone if it helps with scheduling.

Is a buss design base good in Industrial Revoution? And if so is it worth it to crush the ore before they go to the smelter arrays to maximise the effichiensy in the start or is it just a waste of time and resourses. Thanks in advance.

Best Computer Specs for Factorio (2020)

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 06:16 AM PST

Okay megabase engineers - what computer specs do you recommend for Factorio going into the new decade? Laptop and desktop.

I've seen older posts but not anything recent. Don't care about minimum requirements or cool stories about how it runs fine on your ten year old potato. I want real antectdata from megabase engineers about what you need to have decent performance at the 1K SPM level. Extra credit for details beyond raw power like heat and coil whine. Thanks a bunch.

Output cargo count by wagon onto circuit network?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 12:16 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm aware that you can hook up a circuit to a train station to read the contents of the train. However can you hook up a circuit to read the contents of each wagon, rather than of the train overall?

The issue I'm trying to solve is if I have two wagons, both being loaded from requester chests which have their filters set by a circuit, how do I avoid the bots overloading one carriage while ignoring the second one?
