    [META] Updates to the subreddit

    Hello all!

Hope you've all been staying safe over 2021, it's been a wild ride for most of us, and a sad ride for some. It's heartening to see this road seem like it's finally turning it's last bend.

Though through it all life doesn't stop ticking on by and that's no different for our little subreddit here either.

It's been my privilege to serve you all for the last 3 years as a moderator under the leadership of u/Zirr, who founded our subreddit 8 years ago and today it is with some sadness that I am to announce that Zirr has decided to step down from leading both the subreddit here and the Discord guild, and I have stepped up to replace him. Zirr will still be saying on the mod team but will be taking a less active role in the running of things.

So with that I'd like to give my thanks to a wonderful leader who helped build and maintain a wonderful community and foster an amazing moderation team, one I've enjoyed immensely in being a part of and am proud to be carrying on. And I hope you can join me in sending some appreciation his way.

With that, we also have 2 new additions to the team. While moderation applications were never opened they did happen to modmail us at the perfect time and well, here we are!

I'd like to welcome both u/simonk241 and u/Lannindar to our team! They're both very keen to help contribute to keeping our community the great place it is today. Hopefully you'll give them a warm welcome and a little understanding as they learn the ropes of maintaining our community.

Feel free to put any questions or concerns you have here and the team should be around over the next day to provide you some answers!

    Is factorio worth it?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 10:38 AM PDT

Last week, a friend of mine decided to buy terraria and he allowed me to play for a few hours. I really enjoyed playing the game so I told myself that I'll to buy it the following week once I'm able to save up some cash.

Fast forward to this week and while I was browsing reddit, I stumbled upon a post about a Let's Play video of factorio. I was curious and decided to watch a video and boy was I blown away how players can make huge bases and he seemed to be having one heck of a time. I tried the demo and I got hooked right away, kinda like my experience with terraria.

Now my current dilemma is that I have enough cash to buy either terraria or Factorio but not both. I just want to make sure that my money is well spent on game that I will probably spend my limited time on it so is Factorio really worth it?

Edit: Big thanks to GTRxConfusion for gifting me the game and thank you guys for all the suggestions luv you all <3

Nice seed to chase the 8/15h achievement

    Seed: 3920529700

    Hi,

just wanted to share this random seed because I like it so much.

It´s a natural fortress needing few walls to wall in, has a sea right in the middle for power, not too many trees, but plenty for wood. Space is mostly clear with only few dead trees, rocks and cliffs. For mid game are enough ress nearby and you can easily expand.

    Enjoy

    Factorio changed my life

    Posted: 07 Apr 2021 03:37 AM PDT

    Hello everyone !

I am a 1st year Mechatronics engineer in university and I like being rational and efficient. How is this related? Keep reading and you will understand, but its pretty easy already. So long story short: 3 days ago I stumbled on a video about Factorio and OH MY GOD. This game instantly clicked with my most deepest and moist engineering desirers. Crash on a planed and advance science to the point of going to space. This sounds very familiar :) (check my profile picture). I might be really terrible since I started playing 2 days ago but the ability to E X P A N D your factory the way you want really does make you feel M O I S T. Maxing efficiency has become my top priority to the point that it has become more addicting than aggressive crack ( don't do drugs I myself don't do it ) but you get the idea. I am sure we all do. I am glad to be alive in a time where a game THIS GOOD exists ! I really want to min max as hard as I possibly can but I don't know where to start from and this is what makes this game fantastic! I want to know how this game clicked with you all and what were some of your really -300 IQ experiences. Also are any fellow engineers playing it ? :) I want to get to know this community better because this game takes a lot of time mastering. Also any starting tips ? ( don't tell me too much I also want to explore and test stuff for myself)

    Thank you for reading !

Is it better to output backwards (belts going in the opposite direction of the inputs) like this? I figured it was more expandable, but I'm wondering if there are any downsides.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 06:39 PM PDT

I spent 32 minutes on this, "What's it do?" you may be asking, well, it automatically produces science packs and inserts them into the lab. It's not very impressive but it's my first build that actually involved a good amount of effort, I'm too scared to turn it on because I'm scared it won't work.

Is it enough? Or should factory grow?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 10:50 AM PDT

After what size of base have you ever gotten problems with lag using a normal 8GB laptop with normal specs.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2021 04:05 AM PDT

I seem to have experienced a random few second lag spikes when using my tank. My base isnt big at all, it only draws 87 MW of power generated by only two reactors.

Just working on something LTN-related, need experienced advice.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2021 06:12 AM PDT

So, rn I'm working on preparation to my future trains-based megabase (designing some blueprints etc.). And here is a part which I have some questions about: https://imgur.com/a/1KNIkC9.

Is it enough rail signals? And maybe there is some not necessary signals here? It's right-hand driving rails, btw.

I'll apreciate any advices about how to make it better 😌

    Best UPS optimisations

    Posted: 07 Apr 2021 07:35 AM PDT

    Hi All,

When 1.0 released I started a new map with the view to push to 10k SPM. Only issue is that I did not account for the UPS penalties. So after about 5k SPM it dropped to about 35 UPS (heavy nuclear, main bus type base and extremely un-optimised).

Currently on a new map for 1.1 and almost finished with my items hub (10 rockets launched). Have looked at some UPS optimisations but wanted your tips as well. I am playing vanila with QoL mods.

So far I have used, solar panels instead of nuclear and direct insertion. Any others?

    [Space Exploration]Can't automate spaceship docking

    Posted: 07 Apr 2021 07:22 AM PDT

    Hello

I'm having serious troubles figuring out how to tell the spaceship to actually land & dock into a planet, I've search around and I only found this previous post:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/hw6ysa/space_exploration_clamp_help/

In one of the replies it even mention about the need of "conditional signal sender(s)" but completely forgets to mention them later in the post.

Anyway the whole thing is super confusing and even the replies there weren't really clear, for example:

U can set it to pair with multiple type of clamps. And it seeks to do with the one it can. For example spaceship clamps is arrow right (1). Nauvis is arrow left (1). Spacestation is arrow left (2). Then u set condition that right (1) pair with left (1). And another one set right (1) pair with left (2).

What you mean "Set the condition"? where to? spaceship clamps can't even be connected to a circuit network, also by "Nauvis" you mean planets in general? and "Spacestations" you mean planet/star orbits?

But even using a constant combinator having the exact signals sent to the spaceship console via a costant combinator doesn't do anything, to be sure, I even tried each and every single possible combination of the 4 clamp-related signals:

    - Anchor to target right clamp(both the blue and the yellow one)- Anchor to target left clamp(both the blue and the yellow one)

I've tried all 4 of these signals with both values of "1" and "2", absolutely nothing.

There's also the whole issue of "Clamps facing in the opposite direction" - first of all, I have no idea which is the front and which is the back of those clamps, there's no arrow or description that helps you tell those apart, but either way, I've tried to place the clamps in opposite direction in both of the combinations possible - nothing happens whatsoever.

    Some screenshots:

Here's the left clamp, the one in the right is the one in the spaceship and the one in the left is the one in a space station.

    https://i.imgur.com/vTBons2.png

The clamp on the left has the signal "Anchor using spaceship left clamp(yellow)" with a value of 1

The clamp on the right has the signal "Anchor using spaceship left clamp(yellow)" with a value of 1

There's also another couple of clamps on the right side, both placed in the same directions of those of the left, their signals are the same except it's the "right" signal instead of left (also with a value of 1)

    The console

    https://i.imgur.com/F2oB4SW.png

With those signals, the spaceship launches towards the same space station as it was previously docked (Planet symbol with value of 85), the last signal is "Anchor to target right clamp", but as I said it doesn't do anything, tried every possible combination but it just doesn't do anything, the spaceship just stays in space and that's it.

The whole spaceship (no idea if this is relevant):

Any help figuring out this mistery would be appreciated ~

Electric network info screen totals on graph?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2021 03:33 AM PDT

Am I reading it wrong or does the power window really only display totals for consumption and production right at this moment as opposed to graphs for past data? Isn't this something people would want?

It's as if they just copied the production tab where totals would indeed not make much sense, but to me at least one of the main functions of the power window would be helping me decide when to expand power by comparing total demand to total actual and potential generation over time. (Yes I know the usual meme and rule of thumb answers, I am looking for actual numbers.) Even manually summing up the largest consumers at various points in time only gives a rough half answer to that question.

Say I open the window after an attack to see what happened. There is a spike on the consumption side and a matching spike on the production side. Great, so what does that actually mean? Was the demand met or were my lasers power starved and would have spiked twice as high if there was enough juice on the supply side?

Considering that both the people playing this game and the devs are much smarter than me I am reasonably sure I am missing something obvious because this seems like a very basic and easy to implement feature yet it doesn't seem to get mentioned much. So please educate me, this is one of those times where I am genuinely happy to be shown why and how I am wrong.

I've been playing on this world for about 20 hours and throughout those 20 hours I've had a problem with getting raided by those cockroach looking thingys, I tried destroying the spawners with grenades and military ARs with heavy armor but to no avail, does someone know how to destroy them? Thanks.
