I bought a house, and accidentally Factorioed it.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 12:16 PM PDT

I am the laziest man on the planet. I bought the house with the tiniest yard I could find, as I detest yard work. What little yard was left I bricked over with patio pavers. My wife wanted some small raised brick gardens for tomato's, so I was like why not we can build it into the patio.

But, I detest yardwork. So, of course I set up an automatic in-ground watering system so I wouldn't have to water. I don't want to have to shut off the timer after rain as recommended, so I set up a three point moisture sampler automated waterer and endlessly have to tweak it. Great, except now I want to future proof myself against the constant water pressure cause by my exterior faucet (hose hookup) constantly being on, so it's time to bring out the cistern. I've got to redo the gutters anyway because of the drainage issue caused by the patio, so I might as well install a rainfed pressure system into the watering apparatus. Oops, I forgot to build an overflow into the cistern, time to rip that shit all out and start over. Now it's mosquito season and it's time to figure out a way to make it airtight while maintaining the overflow.

ALL THIS SHIT BECUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO MOW A 20X20 PATCH OF GRASS AM I INSANE?

Mod that unlocks all tech at start?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 02:03 AM PDT

My kid really likes factorio except the science bit. He wants to start the game with an empty map but all tech already unlocked - I'm guessing he wants something more like a cooler version of minecraft? He just wants to build trains and get to killing bugs right from the start - he likes designing the infrastructure and does not want unlimited resources. He plays in worlds he finds on steam that has all tech already developed, but wants an untouched map.

    Does such a mod exist?

Even better if the mod can support multiplayer so his minecraft friends can join.

Is there a simplified version of space exploration?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 04:49 AM PDT

I was super excited for the end game stuff, but as soon as I get into the game, almost all the crafting recipes have been redone. Things are needlessly complicated and tedious like in Bobs. Most of my vanilla blueprints don't work. I just want the endgame features added onto vanilla, you know what I mean?

Finally got the blue packs coming in.. loving the strobe on the labs. Has anyone done any cool strobing light builds?

I had to write a descriptive piece with the title "The Factory" and naturally, I wrote about Factorio. Enjoy!

A blinding flash of light, and then nothing. The impact that caused my unfortunate fate on this damned land was quite a surreal one. Completely unexpected, yet destructive nonetheless. It was a miracle I was even alive, for after the debris and dust had settled, all that remained of my ship was a ruined carcass of a machine, serving a single purpose now: salvaging.

I looked around me, assessing my surroundings, and subsequently, my fate. All was barren for miles, except for a few lonely trees here and there, huddled together like flocks of green birds. Fortunately, the atmosphere accommodated my lungs, and I gasped in a breath of fresh air. The trees weren't the only source of hope on this planet, for I noticed something quite reassuring beneath me. The soil was covered with precious minerals. Iron, gathered in clumps and shining from the sunlight; copper, abundant and orange in colour, and coal, the black gold, strewn about wildly on the surface.

I jumped up in excitement. My years as an engineer will finally pay off - I told my self - and quickly began harvesting those ore-sized pieces of hope. The resources that survived the crash proved essential, and with them I started building the beginning of what will be my road to salvation: a coal miner. As I finished construction of the first machine, I immediately realized a problem with my plan: power. Wildly looking about, I noticed something far off into the horizon. It was blue in colour and reflective, and while I had hid any thoughts concerning it in the back of my mind for fear of going insane, here it was, presenting itself to me in the most convenient of fashions.

Hours went by and the first signs of construction were showing. The miner was operational, from the power of the boilers, steam engines, and the pump, that was carrying tonnes of precious water. I promised myself that even if my escape from this planet required even the tiniest amounts of pollution, I shall look for a different solution, for what honour is there in destroying the world you live in?

As the days, weeks and months passed by, I began to truly appreciate my achievements. Just 113 days ago, I crash-landed on a barren planet, one that seemed to be my early grave. 113 days later, I was fortunate enough to look upon my glorious factory, and think to myself, how could one man build this? It was magnificent, the power plants, boilers and steam engines, all breathing together in a harmonious manner, generating heaps upon heaps of power for the machines to devour, producing tonnes and tonnes of materials per hour. Mining, smelting, purifying, fabricating, all happened before me. All working smoothly and as intended. Not the tiniest bit of error about it. It was… perfection.

The conveyer belts were transporting raw materials and products to and fro, delivering and supplying without fail. Inserters were carrying products from one fabricator to the next, making the most wonderful of sounds, the grinding of gears, the hissing of steam and the creak of machinery. Oh, how that ambience pleased me, it was a sign of productivity, a sign of progress, a sign of making that next step towards home.

Home. That was the end goal, I kept telling myself, that was what kept me going through all those countless hours of engineering and reverse engineering my machinery. It was exhausting work, but I loved every second of it. The joy persisted for long after, until, I took one look at the water. It was the murkiest of colours, a dark bubbling green, completely engulfing that lovely blue colour of the lake I knew. I was appalled. How did this happen? Have I not been conservative? Have I not recycled every bit of material I could, and minimized all pollution to a near zero?

Apparently not, I thought to my self, and here was the proof. Regret muddled my mind, but then fear quickly took its place, for across the horizon, I spotted a sickly creature, an insectoid with a dark-blue exoskeleton. Even at this distance, I could see that it was enraged, threatening, and charging at full speed.

Need help figuring out how to set up ground artillery with Spidertrons in Vanilla game

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 04:29 AM PDT

    Hi All,

I'm trying to set it up such that a spidertron could build a ground artillery and then feed it ammo. I realized spidertrons cannot have things taken out through inserters. So, I tried to use requestor chests and burner inserters, instead.

However, I couldn't get drones to move artillery shells from the spidertron to the requestor box. I have both logistics and construction drones on the spidertron, along with portable roboport. I also set the spidertron to request (and carry) 70 shells.

Is there a way to do this, or something like this, in the vanilla game?

    Thanks!

Does anyone know how train wagons used for storage like in this setup will affect UPS?

It would be great if the build queue was automatically updated as soon as the inventory has some new ingredients.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 08:09 AM PDT

I'm actually surprised this feature hasn't made it to a game version yet. It makes a lot of sense at least to me. Right now, lets say that an item takes 200 gears to build, and it's not building yet but it's in the queue. So I find a container full of gears and I load them all in the inventory. It would be cool if I didn't have to cancel that item and re-build it this time without the 200 gear requirement. This will also reduce spills/ingredient dumps when a build is cancelled and all unused ingredients have to go somewhere, but the inventory is already full.

What is the "default Module" and "default beacon" in Kirk calculator? Also, there doesn't seem to be a slot for modules in rocket silo.

I have a belt that has all red packs on the left right, all green packs on the right. The belt dead ends at an inserter that I want to grab red and green equally so they can be distributed down a chain of labs, but it only grabs red. How can I make it grab from both sides equally?
