Reddit's new auto-scheduled posts system didn't post this week's thread, so here it is. I'll have another look over the settings to see if we did anything wrong (it's the first week we're using it).

Can we get an achievement in-game titled "This is why you play the tutorial" once you research your first tech as an homage to this guy?

IR2 has been out for about a week now. How's the gameplay? Anything new/unique? Relative difficulty? Would you recommend it?

I don't care about the mod author or and drama, only the mod itself.

Sadly, Factorio didn't win the award which only means:

    Happy factory day!

Replacing Belts with underground Belts to improve FPS - a small experiment.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 12:49 AM PST

    Howdy Factoriods,

I have spent about 200 days on my current base - it is relatively big with two big (distinct) train (LT-) networks thousands of robots and approx 30x4 reactors. A few months ago I bought the latest and greatest MacBook Pro with 32 GB Ram and the best CPU/GPU available. Recently the game began to lag. I went down to about ~28-32 FPS (from 60 FPS/UPS).

I then read a few posts about how to bring the FPS back up again. There are some posts that state that reducing the number of belts helps to improve the FPS. Somehow I found it hard to believe but I tested it.

    Setup:

    1. Count the number of belts I have in my logistics network: 14 blue belts.
    2. I then did nothing but replace as many belts as possible with underground belts.
    3. After a while I noticed a significant FPS increase: FPS went up to about ~39-42 FPS.
    4. Then I looked up the number of blue belts stored after replacing them: 90 k belts.

This means by replacing 76k belts with underground belts I got approx. ~10-11 additional FPS.

I will now continue to remove more and more belts - I have already optimized all my blueprints to use underground belts whenever possible to not build up a huge belt count again.

What kind of tips helped you to improve FPS?

I made a very large map a year ago to benchmark my PC. Here's an update after 1.0 and 1.1.x

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 09:53 AM PST

    Hi!

I made THIS post about a year ago where I joked about my base running at a mere 15 UPS.

Someone in that post had the idea of using it as a sort of benchmark. You know for lolz. So, I made a FACTORIO FORUM POST and uploaded my savegame so users could acces it.

Long story short. I recently got a DM on the factorio forums by a user that he wanted to see if 1.0 had any effects on the UPS ingame.

    Well.. it did! It does!

Here's some stats per Factorio Version

    0.18 ran at 15 ups/fps

    1.0 ran at 20 ups/fps

    1.1.6 ran at 32.8! ups/fps

Now, if you also want to see if this giant belted base can cripple your machine. Here are the links to the savegame.

    0.18 savefile here: Click

    1.0 savefile here: Click

    1.1.6 savefile here: Click

(These maps are identical. Just saved on different versions of the gaem)

And for the people that just don't want to click more links than nessesary. Here's a pic of the map.

It's a belted base made with the editor that does about 16.000 science per minute.

    Megabase

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:07 AM PST

Hi there engineers, got a little a question to ask y'all, even tho I have more than 800 hours on the game, I have never ever made a Megabase, and I think that's a mistake from me, so I was wondering, do you people have any tips for Megabase, I just want my first Megabase to not be a bad one, cause Megabases takes a lot of time, thanks in advance!

Also, my objective is like 200 SPM or something like that, I dont really know yet

This is not too big compared to everyone else.. but I am super proud of this!

I was able to work out a way to produce tracks, and also still have an off shoot that produces spare cogs so I am able to save them for other projects as well!

Small thing.. but to me its pretty exciting and awesome!

    so exciting! :D
