    Space Exploration won!

After many hours of Factorio, and several different mods, I finally managed to win Space Exploration, the best mod for the best game ever :)

First Base – 45 hours. Amazing game.

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 03:23 AM PST

I'm 45 hours in on my first map. I have finished researching the space science packs. Playing in peaceful mode. Here is how it looks like now.

    https://imgur.com/ZMM3OXf

    https://imgur.com/m55JyIs

I have seen some recommendation on Reddit and installed the demo. Bought the game an hour later after completing some of the tutorials.

I have built my base as I was progressing with the research, adding new stuff as required by the situation. Always tried to leave some space for future production but everything gets cramped anyways now. I think everybody underestimates the future production needs at first. I'm so happy that I don't need to defend that unoptimized mess from the bugs. Built some basic train lines. Going back and forth with basic ores and fluids. Had to add a wagon of stones recently because my initial patch was used up.

I have stopped researching new technologies for the moment to have some materials ready for next steps. I would like to try to find out how the robots work. Got me a personal roboport and made a portable fusion reactor. Just found out that it doesn't need nuclear materials to function which is nice. Didn't do anything about the rocket yet. Didn't touch the uranium ore too.

The game is great. I enjoy it a lot. It is the first game in years to capture me so much. I don't even know how far away I'm from the first rocket launch and what to do to get there. But it is ok. We will find it out soon.

Just wanted to share my experience.

Total overhaul mod idea - Taking care of people in cities

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 03:06 AM PST

    Hello,

I've just had epiphany about a total overhaul mod idea: Factorio crossed with Cities Skylines/SimCity/Autonauts/Rimworld. So far Factorio is always about beeing alone on planet and about destroying bitters, and there is no end goal beside launching rocket. But what if there were some primitive tribals on the planet (or some settlers arrived with you on the shuttle)? Beside automating your factories you would have to construct homes for them (or just designate areas on map for their houses)?

This opens a lot of ideas:

    • Providing resources for building their housing. This would require initial resources for construction and small supply of resources to keep their houses repaired (idea from Autonauts). This could be done manually (could be tedious) or just to deliver resources to designated area and it would just distribute itself (more Simcity style where you have areas)
    • Living area would produce waste that you have to handle. Higher levels of residents would produce more difficult waste to handle (polluted water as start, later e.g. plastic bags or broken electronic devices). Later you would have to take care of pollution created by your factory not to discourage citizens to live (like pollution cleaning structures available in Krastorio)
    • You could "upgrade" level of housing areas to another level which will require more advanced components: food for start (Bob's mod bitter breeding for meat, or farms from Angels's mod), later some kind of entertainment items (e.g. dolls), later education items (books), jewelry, cars, TVs, computers, medicine). Higher level of housing would require more advanced items for building and repairing, and produce more complicated waste
    • You could combine it with Klonan's Transport Drones to deliver resources in bulk by trains and later distribute it with busses and trucks to houses by building roads (see mod)
    • Benefits of having citizens: They would replace science labs and take care of researching new technologies. Additionally they could give you some kind of productivity bonuses - either as productivity/speed/efficiency modules, maybe as "workers" which you can assign to machines or regions of machines, or bonuses as global bonuses?
    • You could have different districts with more worker-oriented citizens (by designating industrial regions) which give modules/workers and more blue-collar citizens which would handle researching stuff
    • You would have to increase population by producing resources needed for birth related things - diapers/milk and stuff to increase speed of creating new citizens, otherwise new living areas would not fill with new people
    • If creating residential areas on map would be too difficult to maintain, then they could exists "off screen" and just generate list of demands and byproducts to take care (on the corner of map? [I know factorio has endless map, but I'm thinking about Clusterio and connecting regions by trains] or some other idea)
    • Maybe you could bind residential area levels to different "historic ages"? like Stone Age, Middle Ages, Industiral Age, Electronic Age, futuristic Cyberpunk-like age?
    • MAYBE you could "train" citizens for some kind of dedicated purpose and send them for some kind of raid or expedition (off screen?) and they would deliver you what they were able to find? Some kind of exotic or rare resource unobtainable in other ways? This could be automated by setting e.g. x% of population is dedicated for this kind of task?
    • There could be some kind of dedicated quests/tasks thats pops up randomly (Rimworld's storytellers). Like a plague that requires more medicine (or dedicated medicine), riots, space pods with additional citizens, contacts from other planets demanding resources for some kind of alliance?

I've never created a mod, and this idea sounds like you need deep knowledge of factorio modding internals, so maybe someone would like to tackle this idea? What do you think?

I think that this would add another interesting layer of taking care of someone besides you and your rocket, would require to manufacture wider array of items which are in constant need.

The Factory must grow – how to quickly expand

The Factory must grow – how to quickly expand

I have been playing this map for several weeks now and I just found out how to quickly "expand"

    https://preview.redd.it/w4jt4trakj761.png?width=2688&format=png&auto=webp&s=75bf668ae1cdcae8233c25359efb37e3c7993d92

How I usually expanded by extending my wall + defences. After that I tried to first remove the water (using robots for the big lakes and filled the smaller water places by hand). Then I used refined concrete everywhere.

    This has several disadvantages:

    - Filling small water holes manually takes a lot of time
    - while the area is not filled with refined concrete my character moves slow as hell.

    How I do it now:

    I mainly did three adjustments:

Remove water without leaving small water holes

Maybe most of you know this already but I just found out yesterday. When you have a big ass blueprint full of landfills you can just place the landfill everywhere by pressing Shift + Left Click (Mac). This will place ghosts where it can - where not ghosts can be places nothing will happen. This will leave no holes.

Lay out refined concrete immediately - but not completely.

While my robots are busy removing water I don't want to overwhelm them with even more requests. So instead of filling everything with concrete I tell them to only place concrete in a pattern using a blueprint:

    https://preview.redd.it/nafuawurlj761.png?width=2688&format=png&auto=webp&s=3496830b18fe45530b84dbb1660887a8954843b4

This lets me walk around relatively quickly. Robots usually behave almost randomly and thus if you tell them to fill everything they just lay out the concrete almost randomly - even where you will never walk around.

My "grid" blueprints contain 25 roboports, 25 big poles and 4 radars.

Only tell robots to remove rocks/trees of areas they can reach

If you are telling robots to remove trees/rocks too far away from your base they will try to fly there and may end up in a "deadlock". Just wait a bit.

Do you have more tips how to quickly expand?

-we crashland on an unknown planet

-we start building factory which creates pollution that destroys the planet

-native beigns don't want their planet polluted so they try to stop you

-we respond by commiting a massive genocide on their species

-finally we leave after using everything the planet had to offer

Mod to show missing ingredients in assemblers on mouseover?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 03:10 AM PST

Title says it all: I am looking for a mod to show missing ingredients in assemblers on mouseover (similar to how the *existing* ingredients are shown now). This would help immensely to find out the "critical chain" of missing stuff without running there. Do you know if something like that exists?

    Space exploration spaghetti

After taking a break from Factorio to make sure I didn't fail my finals, I am back with even more spaghetti! I started SE, and just finished the "normal" sciences, so now I just have to figure out how to actually go to space.

    https://imgur.com/a/d7P6KfQ

    Notable features:

The absolute monstrosity that is my oil processing since I was far too lazy to make more machines, so instead, I fit as many beacons as I could and called it a day.

The half lane of copper smelting since I was running out of both copper and space

The yellow science build that I was very confident would fit in the space I had, and, I mean technically I wasn't wrong but it ain't pretty

The roboport smack dab in the middle of my steel smelting line because damn it, my roboports are going to be grid aligned even if it means I'm running out of steel

Only a third of my labs are running because I'm out of stone again

The core miner that isn't connected to power since I don't have enough to support it

Larry, who is very important to the factory, and is doing excellent work

I just got the game and I'm in love!!!

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 03:36 PM PST

Me and my friends were bored and wanted a game to play and I remembered a game that I watched a video about( https://youtu.be/-X2_BnCOWPM) and I thought my friends wouldn't like it but it turns out they said it looked like a fun game when you got the hang of it. We then Bought It on steam around 1pm and I already have 5 hours in it and I can't stop thinking about it.

    Space exploration guide

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 04:17 AM PST

Hi, I'm playing a new gale using the space exploration mod. I built the rocket, launched a few to discover new planets. I built the cargo. but no I'm wondering what to do next?

Should I launche my first cargo to space or to a planet? it seems going to space first won't help as vulcanite is required as ingredient to produce space science.

what is your advice for the first cargo launch? where do you go and what do you bring with you?

How can I change the colour of biters on the map?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 08:39 PM PST

Is there something simple I can add to the data.lua file in one of my mods to set the colour biters and bases appear on my map? I'm colourblind and sometimes the red doesn't pop. On the wiki there is such a thing as enemy_map_color for prototypes/entitys but I don't know how to use it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just started, quick question about getting materials to the right place

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 06:36 AM PST

Hello brave engineer people! I hope you can forgive these very basic questions. I've read some basic guides but am a little lost.

I've only got a couple of hours in this wonderful digital crack disguised as a game. I'm making green science goo to research with, and I was wondering how best to take iron and copper plates from their far away furnaces and split them equally between the various "input" wooden boxes I've got:

    https://i.imgur.com/egOte0J.jpg

I'm really really terrible at planning and organization, part of ADD I guess, so my stuff isn't going to be well laid out. Unlike your mum.

As far as I can tell, I need to route conveyor belts by all the input boxes, with robot arms to pick the materials. Can I mix materials on the same conveyor belt? What's a good way to move coal to the 3 places that need it, namely the steam boiler, copper furnace and iron furnace? How does one evenly split such stuff?

Also, if I want to pause that whole shebang making green goo, is there a switch I can research?

Thank you, sorry for the dumb frequently asked questions

    Need city block design help

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 09:01 AM PST

So I am a fairly new player with only 300 ish hours into the game. I want to start a megabase using the city block design as I wanted it on Nilaus's channel but I am just not sure how to make it work. For the beginning "mall" starter base it would be very simple. You could train in ores to be smelted and then run that on the bus to the main mall where all of your items will be built. That part is easy.

My questions begin after that, the point at which you are turning into a megabase. If you use the city block design and each section is basically like a service, i.e. copper ore in and copper plates out, how do you determine where those go and in what quantities? Do I need to build multiple trains from the copper plates station to various other city blocks? This part just doesn't make sense to me since I have no idea how to get an export ratio done for each city block. If I need 2 blue belts of plates to a block, how do I make this happen and what do I do with the rest of the output from the copper plate export? Maybe, that doesn't even matter and I'm overthinking it but I am stuck on this.

    Any help would be appreciated.
