Calculating the density of Nauvis Posted: 14 Oct 2020 04:50 AM PDT Nauvis, the planet in Factorio, rotates very fast, with one day/night cycle taking 416.67 seconds [1]. On Earth, centrifugal force from the planet's rotation counteracts gravity by 0.3% at the equator [2]. There is actually a feedback loop, with the lower gravity causing the equator to bulge, which increases the radius and weakens gravity further. But I will ignore that and calculate the lower limit, by assuming the planet is a sphere. Nauvis rotates much faster than Earth, so its gravitational force is countered much more by its centrifugal force. If it spins too fast, objects at the equator will completely overcome gravity and be launched into space. Due to the previously mentioned feedback loop, once this process starts it will result in the entire planet tearing itself apart. Since this has not happened yet, Nauvis's gravitational force must be greater than its centrifugal force at the equator. (a) gravitational_force > centrifugal_force We can expand the formulas for these forces. Centrifugal force: F = mω²r [3] Gravitational force: F = GmM/r² [4] And get... (b) GmM/r² > mω²r Which simplifies to... (c) GM > ω²r³ The formula for density is: density = M/V [5] And the volume of a sphere is: V = 4/3 Ï€r³ [6] So the mass of the planet is... (d) M = density * 4/3 Ï€r³ The formula for angular speed [7] is... (e) ω = 2Ï€/T Substitute M and ω into equation (c)... (f) G * density * 4/3 Ï€r³ > (2Ï€/T)²r³ And solve for the density... (g) density > 3Ï€/(T²G) Plugging in period T and gravitational constant G [8]... (g) density > 3Ï€ / (416.67 s)² / (6.674×10⁻¹¹ m³⋅kg⁻¹⋅s⁻²) (h) density > 813400 kg/m³ This is far denser than iron (7874 kg/m³) or gold (19300 kg/m³), and is aproximately equal to the density of a white dwarf star. In conclusion, Nauvis is a white dwarf. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Oct 2020 03:35 AM PDT It would be fun if there was a once a week "Show us your..." thread. People of course already share pics of parts of their factory that they are proud of or think is unique. But more mundane parts of the factory might go unshared, but what one person find mundane might be amazing to another. A list of examples: Show us your Laboratory Show us your favorite Circuit design Show us your Blue Science Factory Show us your Craziest Spaghetti Show us your Power Plant Each week people would be encouraged to show a pic of whatever that weeks theme is. The possibilities are endless. Its not meant to discourage people already posting their designs, but to encourage more people to post who might otherwise not. My favorite thing about visiting this sub is seeing photos of what crazy things other people come up with that wouldn't have occurred to me, I never copy, but I certainly get inspired. Posted: 14 Oct 2020 02:15 AM PDT Hello fellow addicts. Im Stun, a Factorio player who wants to go big. As the title says im planning to do a Factorio run where the science cost is 100 times higher then usual. I already did a 500 times run with someone back very long time ago.. but we didnt manage to go past blue science at the time because 500 was alot and we werent that good back then. However.. hes gone now we stopped playing a long time ago and i really really want to do something like this again because its huge fun its amazing and i love the idea of it. Its gonna be vanilla and if the need for ltn rises ill prolly add it. Biters will be turned off and there will be many many ressources. sooo with that said... im searching for players who will join me on my journey doesnt matter where youre from doesnt matter how old you are, as long as youre willing to help and not gonna troll. Heres the Discord Link :) https://discord.gg/wYcYcmt [link] [comments]
The Overlooked item: Buffer chests Posted: 14 Oct 2020 05:36 AM PDT I simply love those... They work so nice with my stations and have a feature that is often overlooked: Their requested contents DOES NOT get substracted from your logistic network. This makes using them in an LTN station or any other wire setup very handy and reduces the number of combinators needed greatly :D Also you can use them to move stuff to be where it needs to be, you can set your requesters around it to feed "from buffer chests" and this will keep travel time during loading/unloading to a minimum [link] [comments]

Australian or New Zealand players? Posted: 14 Oct 2020 03:43 AM PDT Looking for a small crew to play with casually.. I've got approx 300 hours, and have just introduced biters to my game. Looking for some people with 300 hours plus. Not sure if this is the place for this kind of post. PM me and we can talk details [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Oct 2020 10:48 PM PDT This project is mainly taking place on r/therocketequation. Find description there. I have recently calculated the mass of sulfur and its acid. Math: Water unit = 10.6685 ml (as explained on rocket eq) [link] [comments] |
