Factorio Day 1, I am already worried about my sanity, watched a couple of tutorials on "the bus".

My 6 year old has caught the bug

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 05:45 PM PDT

(just a small moment of daddy pride, lol)

My just turned 6 year old saw me messing around this afternoon, asked to try the game. So I shut down, install on his computer, and set him up in the tutorial. Show him a couple basics, and head off for a nap, working an overnight.

An little while later, I get up, head downstairs, to see him loading into a freeplay world, set to peaceful. Check the steam overlay, yep, 147 minutes in game, wife confirms he hasn't moved. Dang, kid.

Head to work, get calls and texts asking about certain things. Long story short, he's been in his freeplay world for nearly 2 hours now, has power up, and has a lab grinding through red research. My wife isn't a gamer in any sense, so I know for a fact that this is entirely his accomplishment, aside from basic questions like, "do I use pipes between the pump and boiler?" and "where can I find the pump again?" (his actual questions, lol)

My 6 year old has caught the bug. His factory must grow.

You should try Krastorio 2...Yes you.

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 05:44 AM PDT

So I am in general in favor of playing mostly vanilla. Though in my ~2200 hrs of playing I've played most of the major mods (Pyan, B+A, Seablock, etc.), but I always came back to Vanilla. I feel like some of those other mods are just....more complex recipes...so you just have to have a little bit of self hate and a desire to hold you back from your goals through these tedious steps (just my opinion, no hate if you love playing that way).

Krastorio 2 however has brought some really thoughtful game-play changes, as well as unique music, which is important. It creates a new environment for you to immerse yourself in, and the recipes actually make some good sense. The assets are also very well designed and match the look/feel of vanilla nicely.

I've just just about finished a starter base, just need to get a few more things automated so I can move on to building out either a mainbus or city blocks. Haven't really decided yet. Bus seems very easy to me at this point, and since I'm already challenging myself blocks may be the way to go.

But back to my main point, this is the first overhaul-type mod I've played where it didn't *feel* like it was just a bunch of complex recipes to make your life harder on the way to your goals (whether it is launching a rocket, SPM, or RPM).

Took me 15 hours to complete the tutorial. Not sure if that's good or bad, but either way I'm proud of what I've accomplished in that time. I've learned a lot, and am excited to learn more.

    Is Factorio worth it?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 02:20 AM PDT

Currently I am trying to save for a PC and not use a laptop. I played the factorio demo and really enjoyed it and I played it for over 16 hours. So I was wondering if I should buy Factorio and would it be worth it or should I save for the PC.

Running out of space? Just build a new factory

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 06:32 AM PDT

Installed the demo on friday, took me 12 hours to finish it. Bought the game today and this is what i got going on so far after two hours. This game is so much fun. Thanks Wube!

You can't enjoy remnant visuals late game

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 03:21 AM PDT

Minor complaint but something that's bothered me for a while is that once an entity is destroyed, it's immediately replaced by a ghost on top of it once you get bots. The auto ghost functionality is definitely necessary but it does reduce the visibility of the remnants significantly. I wish there was better unity between remnants and ghosts so that you could enjoy the remnants better without losing ghost functionality.

The new remnants pretty much characterize what was destroyed now. Maybe if an entity is destroyed, preserve the purple health bar but don't have the transparent visualization?

Used a mod to add more slots on the spidertron, have something like 12-15 exoskeletons on it

Side note, has anyone found a decent mod to add something like inserter compatibility or bot loading capabilities? Been using them for mass landfill and mobile repair packs its rather annoying manually doing it

'Spidertron' in the works since 2014

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 06:40 AM PDT

    RTS elements

In the late game you have this monstrous factory full of machines, trains and flying robots. But you are still a guy running around on your own. Wouldn't it be cool if you could get into your command center and just give orders to your building / combat drones?

    https://web.archive.org/web/20140524113617/factorio.com/content

The idea of making a drone that can fight and build have always been there but never fully implemented.

    • Spidertron is late game
    • Spidertron can be remote controlled
    • Spidertron is controllable through the map
    • Spidertron can build
    • Spidertron can fight
    • Player can place blueprint through the map

In November 2015 their change it to 'Possible future content'

On fff-120 the first public look on spider tron was showed. (2016-01-08)

But on a further fff-200 its seen in a trello card that idea of making a spider was made in 2015.

Because its label as big-feature its keep it as secret .

On fff-315 there talk about spidertron and RTS.

I believe that the developers put the ideas together.
To further my case in fff-330 you can see the file of spidertron made in 2019. So as the the fff-315

I have love hate relationship whit Factorio.

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 03:50 AM PDT

When I first played Factorio I loved it very much. But now like 1/2 years later I have a very hard time getting back to it. when I first played I launched the rocket. I tried some mods, but I don't know what are the best ones to use. Lastly, Biters eat my factory all the time and that is extremely frustrating. So where can I get some motivation to play this game agan.

For how long does gun turrets provide adequate protection?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 11:19 PM PDT

So I've played Factorio +1000 hours but never with enemies before :)...

I've set up a rather large initial base (500x500 tiles?) and lined it completely with gun turrets using pierced rounds, and put up a belt feeding them all with ammo. In front of these I have wall that's 4-5 tiles deep. Can I expect this setup to be rather impenetrable for the near future, or will they evolve shooters soon that will take them out from distance? I have researched oil but not started harvesting it yet so I don't have flamethrowers or heavier defensive stuff :)
