    Steam power calculations

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 12:27 AM PST

I did some calculations for steam power and decided to share them with you:

    • Knowing that a piece of coal in Factorio is equal to 4MJ of power, and a boiler "eats" the maximum of 1.8MW per second, one piece of coal can support a boiler for ~2.2s.
    • The electric drills mine coal at a fixed rate - 0.5 per second, then the ratio of miners to boilers will be 1 to 1.1 or 10 to 11.
    • If you use yellow belts for power (I do), the maximum speed it can deliver coal to boilers is 15 pieces/second. That means we can only supply (15 * 4) / 1.8 = 33.33 boilers = 66.66 steam engines = max production of 60MW.
    • The yellow inserters use 400 W to 13.6 kW of energy per second and have a speed of 302 deg/s = 0.84 swings per second.
    • They use 13.6 kW of energy per second they are rotating, so for one swing they use 13.6 / 0.84 = 16.19 kW of electric energy.
    • They need to deliver 1 piece of coal every 1.1 seconds, so they use 400*0.1 + 1619 = 1659W of energy per 1.1 seconds. That means their average use of energy = 1659/1.1 = 1508.2W/s.
    • So, the maximum power generation of a steam engine will be 900-(1.5082/2) = 899.25kW of electricity per second.
    • Also, we know the miners use a maximum of 90kW power consumption and have no power drain (?), then the maximum power production using 20 miners and 11 boilers will be 899.25 * 22 - 900 = 18MW + 873.5kW. If you just use a full yellow belt, you will have 13.33/0.5 = 26.66 miners and 60000 - 2399.4 = 57600.6kW = 57MW + 600.6kW of energy.
    • So, the optimal ratio of miners to boilers to steam engines will be 26.66 : 29.62 : 59.24 = 2 : 1.11 : 2.22 = 100 : 111 : 222.

    P. S. If you think I've made mistakes, let me know.

Edit: was using old data, corrected. Another edit: boilers are 100% efficient, not 50%. Hoping I'm fully correct now :)

Traffic light controlled 2-lane train junction

Traffic light controlled 2-lane train junction

The controlled signal will rotate through each lane, and allow train pass the junction by order.

It will auto skip to next lane when detect no train is waiting the current lane.

    In action: https://youtu.be/fqR7EsiqOdA

    Blueprint here: https://pastebin.com/0a8Uncz3

`I` signal controls how long to switch to next lane.

`W` signal controls how long to block whole junction between lane switch.

    Factorio Individual "city" developement

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 12:13 AM PST

So I had an idea that a couple friends and I have tried. It is quite exciting to see how other people build so what we do is: 1. Spawn a map with generally even resources and no biters. 2. All just walk for 3 minutes in different directions. 3. start up our own individual cities. Sure we share tech, but thats no problem. After a while we go and see how others have developed. Its like turning factorio into a strategy game of sorts. I guess you could build up weapons and have war with eachother..but its more of an expirament to see other styles of "city building". What do you think?

Why dont signals have colours anymore? It makes it impossible to tell which signal is red or green.

Subtle Map Tile Colors changes the color of terrain on the map to be more, well, subtle -- so you can see other details better.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 01:49 AM PST

I recently released Subtle Map Tile Colors today, mainly to solve one of my annoyances with Alien Biomes (and occasionally vanilla) where certain colors of terrain would make it hard to see certain features.

Subtle Map Tile Colors allows you to apply a global saturation and lightness filter to all the minimap colors for non-water tiles, so you can make them darker and/or less saturated so other things (like resource deposits) stand out more. This particularly helps visibility of stone deposits in sandy areas, though the 'darken' option can make coal harder to see. These filters occur as late as possible in the loading process (aka data-final-fixes, if you're familiar with modding) so should be be compatible with and apply to any mod that adds its own tiles.

Alternatively, you can color all non-water tiles based on their movement speed adjustment, so snow and mud are one color, most vanilla terrain is one color, and the various tiers of concrete are one color. These colors follow a gradient you specify with three 'stops': one for the slowest terrain, one for 100% movement speed terrain, and one for the fastest terrain.

Or, if you really want, you can shift the saturation adjustment the other direction. But that's not Subtle .

Here's a sample of what the mod does, from the mod page.

    Factorio training

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 03:57 PM PST

    Heyo!

Is there anyone interested in playing with experienced Factorio engineers on a new map (no mods-maybe a different session) that are willing to do some Q&A live, in-game? We would be available to show how to do "proper" spaghetti management! Ratios, planning, inventory management, box limits, trains, logistics, bots, power, biter defense, biter offense, etc.

If you are, please join either or both of the 2 public discords below and let us know. Both have running public maps for 17.79 and 18.3. We love playing Factorio! Come hang out with us.

Is there a mod that allows you to build organism/disease that eventually destroy the world like in Plague Inc ? (Basically turn the industrial env into a microbio env)

    Car Circling Strategy

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 08:29 PM PST

What do you think of my new car circling strategy?
I ended up figuring this strategy out by accident, but it's quite effective (especially against worms who can't figure out where to shoot at you) ...unless you hit something... then you're dead. Good for early game bug hunting, and much faster than turret creeping.

    Mirror blueprint option/keybind for vanilla...

I know that there are mods for that, but it's super annoying to constantly switch savegames, bcuz im trying to make a world completely without mods...
