So I got factorio on Friday after a colleague recommended it...

I cannot move my neck now because I spent 15 hours on it this weekend and my shoulder is killing me.

This is like crack for an engineer.

    What.a.game.

Play through the Arrival on Saturday, and started my first freeplay on Sunday. I am on the verge of unlocking the Purple science thingy. I have no idea what I'm doing half of the time and it's one big pile of spaghetti that's constantly needs to be refactored due to scaling issues, but holy crap it's fun.

Building an 8-bit computer in Factorio

Building an 8-bit computer in Factorio

I've recently watched a tutorial by Ben Eater https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyznrdDSSGM where he builds an 8-bit computer from scratch, and he explained it so well i think i might actually be able to replicate it in Factorio. Before i start however, I don't know how well the game will handle it. i've made a lot of circuits, but never on this scale. will the tick delay between combinators cause problems? will using more than a couple of hundred combinators cause a lot of fps drops?

Also, factorio has the advantage of allowing a lot of information on one line, instead of just 1 and 0. I want it to be realistic, so i will mostly use 1 signal per line. however, i am trying to think of ways to utilize multiple signals to save time and space. Would anyone know how that might work?

I'm very exited to begin this project and want to share the result with you guys if i manage to make it work!

    Some Quick Logistics Network Tips

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:18 PM PST

A few quick logistics network tips I've learned over time. Hoping to save a few people a little experimentation time.

    1. Requester Chests with "Request from buffer chests" enabled get their orders filled before ones without. In a loading station, make sure there's at least one buffer-enabled Requester Chest per wagon to keep the train loading somewhat evenly in periods of low supply.

    2. When Requester Chests need supplied, they will look for Active Provider Chests first, if there are any that haven't been emptied. Then they'll look for Buffer Chests if they have the checkbox. Then Storage Chests. And, last, Passive Provider Chests. In an unloading station, make one chest at each wagon a Storage Chest filtered to the unloaded item instead of a Passive Provider Chest, and the train will unload more evenly.

    3. At each step in the above, Requester Chests search the nearest chests first, and work their way out until they find a chest that can supply them (or give up). The closer you can ensure a Requester Chest will find an available supplying chest, the more efficient your network will be, in relation to power usage and UPS. Try to keep supply slightly higher than demand, so a Requester Chest isn't constantly iterating through 100 provider chests across twelve chunks before it finds one it can dispatch a bot to pull from.

    4. Shift+Rightclick an Assembly Machine (or chemical plant, etc.) and Shfit+Leftclick a Requester Chest to set the chest to requesting 30 seconds' worth of recipe materials for the building, depending on its modules & beacons.

    5. Avoid using very large logistics networks, in order to prevent Requester Chests on one side of your base from occasionally seeking all the way across your base to find a Provider Chest it can pull from. Not only will the seek time kill your UPS, but the poor bots have to be dispatched to try to transport the items all that way, wasting several minutes and considerable recharging power.

    6. Make sure you have roboports all along a route connecting potential Requester Chests to Provider Chests, so logistics bots making the trip have a place to recharge along the way. If there's a gap between roboports longer than a logistics bot can get before needing to recharge, it will never arrive. It will constantly be backing up to recharge, then trying again and failing to cross that gap.

    7. You can place roboports apart such that their networks are divided by a single tile gap, and place Requester Chests on one side of the gap using Stack Inserters to feed Provider Chests on the other side of the gap. This will allow you to transfer items between logistics networks without causing excessively long seek times or travel times between Requesters and Providers.

    8. You can use Buffer Chests and Requester Chests set to request from Buffer Chests to decrease seek time and travel distance between Provider Chests and Requester Chests as well. If a Requester Chest in a large smelter array is 4 chunks away from the Provider Chests giving it ore, placing a Buffer Chest halfway between and marking the Requester to pull from the Buffer Chest instead will lower seek time and halve the maximum travel time and distance of each logistics bots feeding it. 2 bots moving an item 100 tiles each is more efficient than a single bot having to move it 200 tiles.

    Anyone have further tips?

New player, How do you get rid of Enemy bases?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 02:06 AM PST

It was really easy at start, me and my two friends would just take guns and go in and shoot everything down like in old rambo movie, now it just doesn't work that way, we've unlocked everything with red and green potions, nothing with blue ones, but will soon tho. Any advice? Any help is good, thank you in advance.

Also, I should mention that they evolved big biters and spliters, which are tanky as fuck.

    Custom map Scenario: Crash-landing

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 04:38 AM PST

You crash-land on the surface of an unknown planet. Before you is a world that's shaped like a long corridor. The walls are an deep and empty void. The air is dry but seems to be breathable, and you've found water close by. As you look around the crash-site you notice the scattered debris and old, abandoned buildings, some still intact. Someone or something lived here before you arrived. There is also signs of another alien life. The husks of an endless amount of monsters lay everywhere around you. But it seems the danger is gone, for now. Question is: What are they and will they be back?

As you scout further southwards you find more dead alien monsters. Destroyed walls and turrets, even artillery cannons are scattered around the main base. A great battle was fought here, but the defenders were severely outnumbered. From the wreckage you can deduce that this base were once a power production base, and a highly advanced one at that. Now all that remains are rubble and ruins. Why did this happen?

Everything around you is either dead or partly destroyed. You are alone. Only a single thought runs through you mind. You have to survive."

    TLDR! What is this?

Basically this is a small scenario ribbonworld + deathworld map with fairly slow research and aggressive biters. But you weren't the first one here. Some advanced machinery are still intact. Its your job to take advantage of that and rebuild. In short; it's an more interesting early game.

You hear a deep voice from the void: "I AM THE QUESTGIVER! You will listen to me or perish!"

    Woha, amazing...

    1. You may NOT build burner mining drills! Make do with what you have.
    2. Restore power, but do not build any power! (at the beginning)
    3. Find the tank
    4. Restore the Eastern Wall
    5. Restore the Western Wall
    6. Rebuild and expand. The Factory must grow.

(of course you can ignore the voice... but just... just.. okay?)

    Good luck!
