Did the biter difficulty rise or do I just suck?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 02:18 AM PST

    Hello people

yesterday I started playing factorio again after a longer absence. I was a pretty casual player, 150 hours of playtime and only one game I played until the point of launching a rocket.

And since yesterday, the biters have kicked me off the planet twice. Both very early in the game.

After getting my ass handed to me the first time I started a new game because my base was not that nice anyway and in the second play I researched towers right after automatition. It did not help.

Me (Pistol, no armor) and my lonely tower without walls got eaten by a mob twice the size of the earlyer mobs somewhere between 30 and 35 minutes (judging by the last autosave). Now I kind of feel like while I am still playing Factorio, the AI is playing a mean game of StarCraft.

Did the biter difficulty rise in the newer patches (I did not touch the biter settings upon map creation)? Do I just misremember how difficult the early game was? Are multiple towers with overlapping ranges/walled towers necessary that early? Or was I simply unlucky? 2 is not that big of a sample size.

Thank you In advance for your help, getting eaten by biters is a sad affair and I would really much like to stop doing that.

Thoughts on FFF #320 - Color Correction

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 05:17 AM PST

Factorio has the most amazing, dedicated and supportive devs in the world. A lot of energy is being poured into polishing the game for the final release right now, and I can not express how excited and grateful I feel. However, I am concerned about how saturated and "candy" the new colors of the entities (not maps or terrain) appear to be, as seen in the recent FFF #320 - Color Correction.

It could be a highly polarized topic, and I want to make it clear that I understand that people have different preferences and tastes, and by no means am I trying to argue that people are wrong for loving the new colors. It's largely subjective. Not to mention that everyone's screen is different. Also, it looks like a lot of work has been done to create the new look. And I feel genuinely bad for not loving the outcome. Maybe the real in-game graphics are different, but for now, we can only form our opinions based on the samples.

    1. Brightness ≠ Saturation/Contrast

I have a feeling that a lot of people reacted positively about the changes because the game is currently too dark. I have to turn up my screen brightness to max, and still feel it's too dark.

However, the brightness distribution curve can be adjusted in a way that the sprites are brighter and richer, without over saturation and harsh contrast.

Maybe it's worth adding in-game gamma or brightness control. Most games have that anyways.

    1. Readability vs. Comfort

Higher contrast, sharper details, and vibrant colors can boost readability immediately. But at the same time, I don't think I'll be able to play the game as much or as long, with increased saturation and contrast. It'll be too tiring for the eyes.

I also think by making everything more colorful, it might actually hurt readability. It feels as if every entity on the screen is trying to grab my attention.

The new graphics look amazing and fresh at first glance. Everything is seemingly brighter and clearer. But as I stare longer at the images, I find it draining for my eyes, and the competing bright colors confusing.

    1. The night-time blue tint might hurt visibility

Readability is improved during the day, by cranking up saturation and contrast. HOWEVER, during the night, the time when visibility is actually a problem, the changes go to the direct opposite direction. The blue tint makes everything less saturated, more subdued and washed out, and harder to differentiate. I can feel my eyes immediately struggle to make out what's going on on the screen when fiddling with the slider of the sample image. A lot of people pointed this out on the forum. I do think utilizing color temperature to enhance the visuals is otherwise a great idea. Maybe make it less blue? Maybe keep the blue but reduce how dark night time is?

    1. Mood and Atmosphere

This is highly subjective, and there is no right and wrong. Like many people, I am in the camp that feel a more gritty, rusty, and industrial look suits the game's overall mood better. The new color feels too bubbly, too shiny and new, too upbeat. Too Candy Rush. Too much like plastic toys. It takes away the atmosphere of urgency and despair coming from being trapped on an alien planet.

On a separate note, I have observed several instances where more vibrant and sharper visuals, while looking impressive in the beginning, somehow ended up feeling somewhat empty and shallow in the end. For example: the original Dark Crystal vs the new Netflix prequel, Diablo 2 vs Diablo 3, Divine Divinity vs Divinity Original Sin, old school Disney vs modern 3D digital animations, etc. This is my personal opinion.

    Suggestions:

    1. The real problem is that the game is too dark—or rather, lacking options to adjust brightness. Maybe increase brightness, but do so without affecting saturation and contrast too much.

    2. Add gamma setting in graphics menu.

    3. Reduce or get rid of the blue shading at night. Or maybe keep the blue, but reduce the general darkness.

A lot of people like the new changes, and I don't think they are wrong. Maybe they actually prefer bubbly colors. Maybe they are excited about the brighter look and don't really mind or notice the side effects. Just want to share my personal thoughts and opinions.

For those who've done mega bases with either is there any lag or ups difference between doing a belt base base or bots based one?

LTN (Logistic Train Network) is a mod I've had enabled for a while, but I never actually bothered to learn how to use it until this week. Holy hell, it's awesome. It's actually inspiring to think about the kind of megabase this mod enables.

How can I figure out how many Labs I can support with my Science Pack output?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 08:02 AM PST

    Hi,

This is something that I'm really struggling with - How do I know how many labs can be supported?

If I'm producing X packs/minute how many Labs (Y) can I reasonably put down the line without it being a waste?

I found an online calculator but that doesn't actually tell me how long it takes a lab to consume a pack so it's figures are blackboxed solution for me.

    Trash can mod?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 09:18 PM PST

Is there any mod that adds some kind of trash can or void chest that just destroys anything you put in? Something similar to the clarifiers but for items. Thanks
