Zubsero's Straight and Narrow Early game mall. Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:11 AM PDT HI folks.Recently I was browsing malls, but none of the ones I could find fit my base. I needed specifically a long and narrow one, so I took it upon myself to create just another early game mall. Its nothing fancy, but its possible others face the same place constraints as me. So might just share it if it can help someone. Please feel free to give me some constructive criticism about improving this design.I added some notes and comments here: Factorio-Prints. Factorio Community Map - June 2021 Posted: 01 Jun 2021 04:18 PM PDT What is this? The idea behind the monthly community map is to share a map exchange string at the beginning of every month, and get as many people as we can to start a new world with it. Then at the end of the month (or even periodically if you'd prefer!) we share screenshots and saves of our factories so that we can see how different people approach the same spawn; how they set up their base, how they deal with aliens, and how they arrange their science, power, and everything else. I hope it can highlight how many different ways there are to do things, inspire some new designs, and maybe seeing how veteran Factorio players tackle problems will help out new players facing the exact same problems. (Of course, there's also the fact that it'll be interesting to see all of the different possible factories - the good, the bad, and the ugly.) Last Month's Results The Community Map I've finally done it - for the first time in 2021, I've made a vanilla map! Shocking, I know. I already described the sort of map I was hoping to make in the May results thread, but just to reiterate: since we've already had both extremes of a near-death world and a megabase-friendly world, I wanted to make something that was roughly in the middle, but of course I also didn't want to make something that was so middle-of-the-road as to be boring. So after tweaking the settings around and seeing what I could come up with, I have this to share with you all! Exchange string: What your starting area should look like: https://i.imgur.com/WaCZt8i.png Sync File: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pcgbA5RhvFqUGTF5CDuXhSh4uBVF84pS/view?usp=sharing I used the Rich Resources default as a jumping off point, but looking at it now I think I wound up more closely emulating the railworld settings. The resources are spaced fairly far apart, but when you do find a patch it'll be fairly rich. (This configuration shouldn't be any surprise to those of you who've paid attention to how I typically generate maps, as this keeps you from having to set up new ore fields every 20 minutes.) Last thing I'll mention is that if you typically like transitioning to nuclear early, you're going to have to do a fair amount of exploring to come across the nearest uranium patch. The rest is up to you - enjoy~ Exchange String Help If anyone isn't sure how to use an exchange string, just go to new game like you're going to generate a new world, and at the bottom there's a button just above play labelled "Import map exchange string" - the icon looks like a little arrow going into a tray/bucket. Just copy the exchange string above and paste it into the box that comes up when you press that button. Press confirm, and that's it! You're good to go. Just generate the world and come back in a month to show us how your factory turned out! If you run into any issues check to make sure that you copied the whole string, including the three greater than/lesser than signs at the beginning and end, and make sure that your Factorio is up to date with the most recent version installed. (As of the time of this post, the most recent version of Factorio is 1.1.34.) Issues With Adding The Save File If you're uncertain how to use the save file I provided above, here are step by step instructions: 1) First, of course, is to actually download the file. Make sure you know where this file is so you can move it later. (It will be in your browser's default download folder unless you've changed it.) 2) Locate where Factorio's save folder is on your computer. If you've installed Factorio at its default location ( C:\Program Files\Factorio ) then there will be a shortcut to your saves folder there called "saves". Double-click it to go to the saves folder. 3) Take the file you downloaded and move it into this folder. That should be it! Now just launch Factorio and make sure you sync your mods to this save before playing. If you'd like to play on this save specifically (for example, if this month has some per-save settings you don't feel like messing with) then you'll notice when you load the map normally your player will be named "ChaosBeing" (since I'm the one who started the save, of course). To get around this, you can host it as a local multiplayer game and then save. You should now appear as your own character when you load the map from now on! If you have any issues, feel free to ask in the comments below, or in the monthly map's channel on the official Factorio Discord. Want To Play With Others? If you have an open public server, let me know in the comments below or send me a PM and I'll add your server here! Feel Like Watching Someone Else? If you are a streamer or let's player who will be recording yourself building a new factory on a community map, I'd be happy to add a link to your channel here! About Mods Since mods can affect how a world spawns and ores are distributed, as well as add or change items and functionality, it's important to make sure that we're all playing the same game by the same rules. For example, if one person's playing vanilla and someone else is playing with Bob's mods, even if they use the same seed and map settings you still couldn't very well say they were playing the same game, and the way they'd play would differ enormously. On the other hand, playing with mods that either don't add any new items or change terrain, or that simply don't change the base game in a significant way, aren't going to change the way you solve problems or the kinds of problems you'll face themselves. As such, these sorts of mods are perfectly fine, even if some people are playing with them and some people aren't. Even Distribution is a wonderful example of a mod that, while very useful, does not inherently change the way the game is played. Then there are also mods like RadarPlus for RSO that do add new items, but still don't really change the way the game is played. I've decided to put together a list of these optional mods that I think are ok to use on any map below. The list is by no means comprehensive; it simply serves as an example of the sorts of mods that should be fine. Optional Mods Note: I can't imagine any situation where this could be an issue, but if you're the author of one of the mods listed here (and can offer me some proof of this) and for whatever reason would like me to remove your mod from this post, I'd be happy to comply. It's entirely possible some of these mods either don't work with the current version of Factorio, conflict with each other, or in some manner just don't work. I can't test them all, let alone every configuration of them, so you might want to back up your world before adding one of these. Understanding logistics drones Posted: 02 Jun 2021 03:36 AM PDT Hi there, My friends and I are playing factorio together and aside from some connection struggles we are having a good time. We are at the point where we want to start exploiting drones to automatically repair and resupply our defensive walls ringing out base (we have one guy on the team who loves the combat so he has cleared a massive area that we use only 1/6th of at present.). On first tests we set up provider and requester chests to get needed materials out to one of our walls, and tested it by shooting it with the rifle. Within a few seconds a drone showed up with a repair kit and took care of the situation. So far so good. Next we started extending the logtistics network around our perimeter when we noticed the drones doing really strange things. They appear to completely ignore the logistics network and just try to fly straight towards a given target, run out of charge, then return, then try again. No attempt seems to be made to actually make use of the logistics network linking point A to point B. We've been really impressed with the other automation options so far (e.g. having parts of the factory turn on and off based on supply/demand in other parts, particularly petrochemicals balancing), so it seems strange that the drones would ignore the provided logistics network, but wanted to ask if we've missed an option for configuration, or if they really do need the entire operating area paved with ports to navigate successfully. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] | ||

Factorio Community Map Results - May 2021 Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:15 PM PDT Time's Up Hands off the keyboard! Another month has come to a close, and it's time to share whatever you've got done with the rest of us! Did you finish everything you would have liked to this time around, or did you wind up still having a few big, unfinished plans? Run into any particular issues, or were you pumping those rockets out like nobody's business? Here's the place to share your stories, screenshots, saves, or whatever else you've got! This Month I've said it before and I'll say it again, scenario maps are always a nice way to spice things up! They offer just enough of a twist to keep things interesting without having to learn a whole new mod or production chain. (Not that that isn't fun in its own way foreshadowing, but I wouldn't want to do that month after month.) There was a surprising amount of decisions to be made right from the start on this map, and I think it'll lead to a lot of variance in the way everyone went about their early and mid-game setups. That's all to say: As always, I'm very excited to see what you've all come up with! Be sure to leave your screenshots, stories, saves, or whatever else you may have down below! Next Month I think I've been saying this for the past couple months now, but this time we are definitely taking a mod break. Vanilla shall return, mark my words! We've also tested both extremes recently, both basically a death world and a very megabase friendly map, so I won't be going near either. Certainly not miles of red on the map, but where you can't just hunker down and pump out rockets for days either. That's all from me for now, so don't let me keep you from sharing your factories any longer! I am working on a deathworld with rampant mod Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:15 AM PDT Any suggestions on what do rush for? Should I rush for making turrents and fire arms magazines? Or should I try to rush grenades? Rush for some early biter nest clearing? I just did a 1.5 hour run where I was overrun totally. I did turrents every other space and a belt with yellow mags in them but they somehow kept destroying my turrents even though i had a wall. Anyone had a success playing this mod to a rocket launch?
