    Factorio Confessions

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 02:17 AM PDT

I had played for more than 2,000 hours before I started using substations in my own designs/blueprints.

It was at least six months before I realized that "Q" unequipped your current item and I had been tapping "1" twice to unequip every time.

What's your silly Factorio confession? :)

How spidertron avoids trains (except it doesn't)

As you may know, spidertron is one of the coolest things added to the game with release updates. It travels through different obstacles by smartly placing its legs in gaps between objects. I wondered how it can help you not to be hit by a train?

I hope I do not repeat.

Generally, spidertron puts each at an unoccupied space. In the case of rails, it is a little gap between them.

If you watch closely, you will find out that not a single leg is on track, so trains can pass through. You can check that by enabling collision boxes in debug settings.

The fun part starts when you start to layer rails because there are no restrictions on putting rails whatsoever.

    https://preview.redd.it/fgrgsywxo9o61.png?width=1038&format=png&auto=webp&s=1735b30d382736573bf947d73009aea436c932d2

You see the pattern there. So, what happens if you copy-paste this as many as you can at any possible variations?

    https://preview.redd.it/vxhmckx6p9o61.png?width=1157&format=png&auto=webp&s=8ee66c84ab99cd8a166529f7fa44c7467f4dc081

Right, it makes a big rail spaghetti mess. That way your spidertron can't find a place to put his leg, so this area is completely impassable (like the water pools).

So, that way you can replicate this mess to make a "spidertron free" zone.

    How does fluid pressure work?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:11 AM PDT

I have a problem with low pressure on crude oil. It consists of 7 pump jacks just started up in an oil field, so there should be lots of oil.

The delivery line is long (about 70 elements in total), and that is probably the reason for my low pressure. And that leads to the question, how should I improve it? Using trains are difficult in my case as there are lots of water in between.

I added a pump near the pump jacks. But the pressure is the same on both side of this pump (i.e about 1.0 to 3.0). That isn't what I would expect from a pump, the pressure should be higher on the output.

I guess I need more pumps on my long delivery line? How frequent should they be? I am using mostly "pipe to ground" for delivery.

I have 8 oil refineries (basic recipe) using this supply, but on average only 2 are active.

Rate my intersection. About to commit to this for a bob's/angels run. Anyone see any issues with this? I figure Higher throughput with 3 way intersections than 4 way city block.

Expanding to the south is a pain

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:40 AM PDT

Playing on an ultrawide resolution, it goes without saying that visibility is at its best when moving East and West, but I feel like we're made to suffer when trying to expand South more than we should.

I constantly find myself in spitter range before I see them, she the quick at seems to spawn rocks and trees beneath it just to troll me, even now that I've learned of ctrl + - for quick UI scaling.

I'd love an extra zoom level of two.

Is there a way to display a blueprint that prints better -- lighter, simpler

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 05:38 AM PDT

Yeah, I'm old-school. Sometime paper works better for me.

Unfortunately, everything in the game is dark and complex. It's wonderful for playing, but not for printing, or even for reading details on screenshots (eg speed-run guides).

A simplified display would also help colour-blind and low-vision players.

    Help with motivation

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 08:00 AM PDT

So I last played Factorio back in like 2016, 0.14, and just decided to play it again, having great fun with it so far but I've come to a point where I encounter a problem which I had back then aswell. I.. dont really know how to expand.

I'm currently approaching blue science, I have two full belts of iron and coal, and 1 full belt of copper, aswell as some stone and steel. I'm making military packs and I just secured a pretty large area from biters, but I just.. dont know how to proceed from here? I know I have to get into oil and I know how to do that aswell but for some reason I can't wrap my head around that type of expansion as I will have to redo it later on anyways.

Anyone have a similiar problem to me? How do you keep yourself motivated to keep expanding. I know it all gets better as soon as you have bots but still.

Question about direct insertion & UPS

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 11:47 PM PDT

So currently I'm designing something where I have essentially 8 factories going into 5. I tried figuring out a configuration where I could use direct insertion with the exact amount of factories but I can't figure out a configuration like that (I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I'm just not good enough to find out what it would be)

Since 5 is a prime (rip), the closest workable ratio I can figure is the classic 3 to 2, so 3 x 3 to 2 configuration. So that would mean two extra factories, but on the other hand, no extra belt lines. Do I have the right idea that this is either more efficient UPS-wise in or at most a really insignificant UPS hit in megabase scale? I tried searching for the answer but sadly this isn't an easy thing to search for

If i buy the game in the official website, my friend and me can play together in a server?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 05:24 AM PDT

Well, i have been thinking. When you buy the game in the official page, u get one steam key and the game in factorio website. One friend of mine rn is having a really bad time and he gave me so many games so i have been thinking of buying the game in the official site and play with him. Is it possible?
