note to self: don't drive your car full of uranium into the one entrance hole that just so happens to have train tracks

Little advice I realized too late, you can absolutely nuke a forest for a powerline. Nukes are good against trees in general.

How does percentage of oil fields translate in fluid per second?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 04:42 AM PDT

So I am trying to do an oil refinery. But for that I would like to know how big stuff has to be. Also, I thought about making so that 50% of light and heavy oil can get translated into gas if there is some demand issue. You think thats too much? or should I make 100% possible and only activate that what is neccessary?

Possible mod concept: unstable items that decay or degrade over time

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 11:49 PM PDT

Was thinking about novel production challenges, and thought that this could be interesting.

I'll use uranium processing as an example. I'd set both items to spontaneously turn into lead after, say, 10 mins. Lead is useless to us, and a recipe will destroy it for a small cost (perhaps using other resources).

This makes kovarex much harder to set up, as you'll now need to make all 40 U235 in 10 minutes. However, it doesn't significantly impact the cost of making fuel cells without kovarex, as long as you make them as needed with a minimal buffer.

I'd imagine a few of these types of could get pretty interesting. For example, consider a recipe x + y = z, where x and y decay. They'd require the player to make a system that will only turn on production for x and y when there's demand for z and the products are ready for both x and y.

Unsure how this would work under the hood. A set decay time per item would be expensive and likely impossible to compute, but you could get around this using a half-life system (very small chance for each item to decay every tick).

Ideally you'd want items to decay anywhere - on belts, in chests, etc - and I'm not sure if this is possible in the mod api. Items already in assemblers or inserters probably wouldn't work either.

Just got back to the game after 3 months

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 02:59 AM PDT

I hadn't played for a few months as I got a new pc and just never got round to installing the game on my slow ass Internet but when I got round to it I started up the game and was hit by the amazing new title screen the music is on point the background shows so much more of a story than the old background and the game has brought a new sense of polish

I was so stunned that upon seeing the new title I tabbed out and left a review, I hardly ever leave reviews but this deserved a good one, my first review on steam was on factorio after 420 hours.

Tl.dr The recent updates in the game are some of my favourites and bring a new sense of immersion to the game

Bug is totally preventing me from playing Factorio

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 04:18 AM PDT

I cant start a new Freeplay, and saving has been disabled through the same error that I am about to talk about, so effectively I cant play "normal" game modes anymore.

All the error messages are along the lines of copying(?) certain files (e.g. image.png, which is apparently the picture of the rocket coming out of the silo from the game menu) from the Steam folder to folders in the temp Factorio folder in AppData cannot be done, as "Access is denied".

I have tried verifying game files, uninstalling and reinstalling in the same folder (D:/, an HDD), uninstalling and reinstalling in a different drive (C:/, SSD), fiddling with permissions or security, and running factorio.exe as administrator, to no avail. Interestingly though, that last option worked for like a minute, I was able to start a new Freeplay without error, but when I quit that game to try to load previous saves, same error again.

If it helps, this only started happening around the 1.0 update for me. Though I've only owned the game since November, apparently from Google searches this has been happening even 5 years ago.

Google searches for possible solutions are duds, doesnt do anything.

So is this it? I cant play Factorio anymore? Any of you guys have a fix? I would really appreciate it because I wanna play, Im so bored.

Thanks, if you bothered to read this far!

A few questions about the mid game

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 07:45 AM PDT

So I've probably spent a little (aka prob 10 hours lmao, I like trains :D) playing around with trains and now I'm way behind on beating back the biters from my base so I can expand. I am certainly holding my own, but I quickly found out I am currently no match at all for Big Worms and Discovered to my dismay that the biters love to get nice and cozy to your defenses. It's not the end times for me quite yet, but I feel if I don't do something about oil sooner or later, it will be.

I also have some ideas about how to streamline resource production, but I don't know if it's genius or stupid, so without any further rambling from me:

    1. Are RPG's/Rocket Launchers worth the trouble of making explosives? Oil is going to be a pain in my arse I've decided, but I've seen Michael Hendriks use them to great effect against biter nests on his ribbon world run, and they seem really OP. But are turrets, flamethrowers, and tanks the standard biter removal tools of choice as opposed to sniping worms and nests with rockets? Gonna be making Sulfur anyway for Blue science, so it's not out of the realm of production for me.
    2. Can I get feedback on the best "starter" oil setup, it seems the primary stuff I want to make first is sulfur and plastic. But I'm unsure of how to go about storing the other light and heavy oil until I have the stuff to make it. For reference, I have all red, green, and military research completed. I would do this myself, but there is literally five hundred videos that could be labeled as "starter oil setups" and I don't want to pick an obsolete one from the batch myself.
    3. I'm going to assume that making plastic directly at the oil fields is the better thing to do as opposed to shipping the oil to the base and then refining it. My spaghetti is already way too much to deal with right now, and I'm probably going to refine out in the field regardless.
    4. (not oil related)I'm thinking about the idea of directly feeding ore to the furnaces by the trains that would supply them ore, which would reduce the amount of time ore sits unsmelted on belts or in buffer chests. But is this a genius idea or something that is comically stupid, and how would I best go about this idea of using only trains as a furnace medium. I think it would reduce the main base footprint simply by removing the hefty furnace arrays that take up too much space already.

I'll come back to this thread later so feel free to give your best feedback, Factorio pros!

    Record science production?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 07:21 AM PDT

Hey, Im just wondering if anybody knows what the current record is for most science produced/min , seems like everyone does a 1k or 2k science per min megabase at some point. But just wondering how far it has actually been pushed so far.

    Saving Freeze

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 05:43 AM PDT

Okay so Im running Factorio on a laptop with 2GB RAM, But it's still able to Run well

After 1-2 saves, the 3rd save Always freezes the game and forces me to End task it which ultimately throws progress away.

Since Im able to save a few times and if Im lucky, I somehow pass the 3rd mark and be able to save

Is there a certain configuration that's able to fix this problem or just get a new laptop?

What is your motivation in the game? (thinking about buying it)

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 02:51 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

at the moment i'm in the demo and its interesting so far, but i dont really enjoy it because i dont understand much and always think i do something wrong. What i surely do.
But learning how things work and making them better is fun, but i was thinking about..whats my goal in the end? (except for the rocket)

Will the fauna be a huge problem i have really to take care of or do i just stomp over them like i did in the tutorial? Because if its hard to get the upper hand or "conquer" different parts of the world, i can imagine that this is quiet enjoyable.

The thing is, i like the game itself, but i cant really tell what my motivation could be later on.
