    I'm curious what is everyone's play style? I see these huge blueprints for trains and such. Do you prefer playing on unlimited mode making blueprints? Or regular mode?

    Is there any balanced train UN-loader that doesn't produce gaps on output belt(s)?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 02:39 AM PST

    Is there any balanced train UN-loader that doesn't produce gaps on output belt(s)?

    I've been experimenting with balanced train unloading to belts recently. I would like to use it, because without balanced unload it's quite frequent that the train spends 2 minutes on the station (instead of 10-20 seconds), most of the time unloaded by 1-2 inserters per wagon because most of the chests are full while only the "outer" ones are almost completely empty. Additionally the train waits so long because 3 wagons are already empty while the fourth one if still pretty-full. That's why I think balanced unloading is as useful as balanced loading.

    So I can manage to unload the chests evenly using various methods seen on the net (like "inverted MadZuri loader" and its variations) so this aspect works perfectly fine. However all of the approaches I tried produce significant gaps in the outgoing flow of items when the system reaches the stable state. Then I would say that only about 80% of belt throughput is utilized, sometimes more, sometimes less.

    It doesn't matter whether I'm using blue, red or yellow belts, the situation is mostly the same. After some thinking I guess this method cannot be improved, because there's a fundamental flaw there - all the calculations ignore the amount of items in the inserter's hand, on the belt directly below the inserter and so on. Additionally this method ignores a significant feedback delay - it takes a significant amount of time from the moment you pull the items from the chest to the moment they are really "unloaded" (dropped on the belt).

    I'm thinking that double buffering could be an option too (wagon -> inserter -> chest -> inserter -> chest -> inserter -> belt) - in this case it would be pretty easy to just control the middle row of inserters and I guess this would work correctly, but that's a lot of inserters and chests [;

    Or maybe a "mechanical" solution (two inserters unload to both sides of belt, then every such belt is balanced with other pairs using an enormous amount of splitters) is the only reliable solution?

    So maybe someone has come-up already with something better? Possibly something simple, without 15 combinators or 20 splitters [;

    Thanks in advance!
