32x32 challenge new record! 9.2 spm

    The micro factory

I spend entirely more time on this than I care to admit.

Everything is moduled and beaconed to support at least 9 SPM; it hits ~9.2 SPM in practice but production graph is a bit irregular. I'm not using super deep buffers so that might be what's causing that.

    10 hour production graph

I had to employ several tricks to fit this performance in:

    - Stone brick production is split over a steel furnace and piggybacking on an electric furnace that usually makes iron plates. This is controlled with an SR latch looking at current brick supply.

    - Light oil to petroleum cracking only occurs when plastic supply is low.

    - Ingredients to the satellite are only fed piecemeal by activating the input inserter when the lab is supplied new packs. This prevents a massive resource shortage directly after rocket launch.

    - Rocket launches only when space science pack supply is running low.

    - Hours upon hours of puzzle solving to fit all this stuff into the 32x32 area.

In terms of production, the current bottlenecks are red chips and steel. The real problem though, which took some optimising, is that this design is starting to run into throughput issues for logistic networks with a single roboport, i.e. its hard to recharge a large enough bot army to keep production stable. I had to change some design points that originally used the bot network to instead use belts. This caused me to use more inputs than I liked, resulting in a less elegant design, but the original challenge explicitly allowed for the option.

Edit: Now that it's no longer late at night let me add some context:

The original post that started the challenge, together with a 3 spm solution: https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/dy6hcr/my_1_chunk_base_almost_id_like_to_start_a/

Shortly after a 7 spm solution was posted: https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/dyll3o/32x32_factory_7_spm/

The previous record that I'm aware of was 8.7 spm: https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/e1s7jl/32x32_factory_87_spm/

I accidentally unequipped my power armor and it made this beautiful mess on the ground. I'm kind of temped to just leave there.

Two features the train scheduler could use.

I think one should be able to click on the name of a stop in the dialogue and select a new one from the list and leave the wait conditions intact. This would help when making slight changes without having to add in the stop at the bottom, add conditions and then move the whole shebang into the right order.

I also feel that you should be able to copy wait conditions without copying the entire schedule and paste them either back into the same dialogue or into a different train's schedule.

I know about copying an entire train's itinerary a pasting it onto another train and I know about naming stops the same name - I just think this would add a bit to the experience.

    Spaceblock (Mod)

    Spaceblock (Mod)

I am looking for thoughts on my current take on Spaceblock. From the looks of things, I just need to wait and expand to repeat the same formula.

    Ideas? Critiques?

What do you think of this diagonal smelter setup. The only two reasons that I done it bcos i had rail there and for experimenting!

Has anyone used Excel Solver or Goal Seeker to optimize your factory?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 07:32 PM PST

I figure with the known metrics for factory output and consumption, it would be fun to use Excel goal seeker or solver to figure out factory configurations. IE plugging in an equation to figure out how many arrangements you need to maximize your output. Has anyone tried this?

For part 2 of The Factory Must Grow voxel art I have decided to make the different methods of power distribution; all the power poles and the substation. What would you guys like to see next "voxelized" from the game for part 3?

here is part one of The Factory Must Grow if you haven't seen it yet.

Recently introduced my friend to factorio. Today he told me he was going to have blue science done in 10 minutes, then he mixed the water and oil lines accidently.

    And so it begins.

    Robots, UPS question

    Robots, UPS question

So, I have a quite big robots only map and I'm trying to keep UPS up.

I'm using the lower of these two designs for steel and considering switching to the upper one, which drops steel into two steel chests and only loads them into the Logistics provider chest when there's a full stack, to prevent robots comming to pick up a single unit of steel.

1, Do you think this is worth it, or will the UPS overheard from the circuit conditions cause more harm than the lower robot count?

2, Given that I'm using a mod that allows infinite science expansion of robot cargo size, is it ever going to be better to use the more complex upper design?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 07:18 PM PST

Why does my pollution keep growing. I built a beginner base all the way to Blue Science so I could have bots.

I have been deconstructing my entire base for about 7 hours now, but I noticed that pollution keeps growing.I have zero automation and I know that my energy use is in the 40 mw range running 2k construction bots, but before that I was near 70 mw, just running the base itself. It keeps growing. Any ideas?

    Failed save (help)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 04:50 PM PST

Ok so I was going to get back on a save that I'd normally play and it's not that the save isn't there it's that I lost over 20hrs of progress but still have a new save file that I started. Any ideas on what I should do?

Edit: the one that I'm having trouble on is a re-save of an one that I worked on a while back, could that have anything to do with it?

Thoughts and suggestions about my early game green/red potions?

I only have about 100 hours in factorio and haven't gotten very far (i keep restarting whoops), and my stuff is always a mess. I keep seeing these people with super neat and lovely bases, everything is nice and neat. It made me jealous so i restarted again and tried my best to make a pretty clean setup. What do you guys think about it? PS, i'm using bobs inserters because it's such a great addition and i think it should be a vanilla thing.
